Thanks!

Thank you for all the birthday wishes! My husband, my other baby brother and my sister sang to me, my Great Grandchildren sent a video greeting and I heard from many friends and relatives.

It was a quiet day,  it rained some during the day.

The leaves are changing and we should be at peak color next weekend.

Appointment for Tilly

The new old car Tilly had an appointment about 45 miles from home.   It was her last look at before we drop her off in December for her body work and new paint...she will return mid summer.   Far Guy thinks that is a long time...he would like to have her home for the entire summer.

Tilly was stubborn in the morning...so we went in the afternoon...her battery was dead as a doornail.  Not sure why... Far Guy thinks it is one of two things...we will see.  After her battery got charged up she purred along.

It was an uneventful trip.

There is still some color.  Some trees are really confused and still have green leaves.

The Smoky Hills show that the wildfire smoke is back.

Once back home I mulched leaves again...I am at 5 1/2 out of 10 now.   We still have about 50 % of the leaves in the trees.

In the morning whilst waiting Far Guy wood carved and I worked on a project in the garage.  Just before supper we went for a ride down to the river.

Trails

We live in an area where there are many backwoods trails to ride.

We were gone about three hours yesterday riding up North of us.

It was a pretty afternoon.

We got back home just after sunset.

Battles

We might lose a battle to the fierce winds that came through but we are winning the war against the leaves.

Tuesday we blew leaves out of the entire yard.  Wednesday Far Guy raked and blew and I went round and round on the lawnmower mulching the leaves.  The wind was uncoorperative Wednesday as it swirled around and came from all directions…we finally both came in and had a nap.

Popples behind the house.

Someday all the leaves will be out of the trees…the Popples seem to be hanging onto their leaves a long time this Fall.

The Asian Lady Beetles have decended upon us.  They showed up when the bean fields were harvested…no more food source for them.  They look like harmless Lady Bugs but they are more orange than red and they bite and if you squish them they stink.   Far Guy battled them one day with the vacuum cleaner. I chose the flyswatter as my weapon…it was futile. We have to shake off before coming indoors to rid ourselves of the horrid little creatures.

October rain

The leaves are falling and it rains every other day.  It is good for the trees and ducks and that is about it.   No fire danger here this year.  The potato harvest…well any kind of harvest has come to a halt in the damp weather.

leaves are wet

Far Guy has mulched leaves twice now.  About eight more times unless it stays wet ..or the S word happens.

a wet bee

Even the bees are wet…sleeping maybe…showered while they slumber.

The acorns that were crunching underfoot are getting soaked and softer.  They no longer make me wish I wore shoes with hard soles.  So there are some benefits of the rains.

Some days a person has to look on the bright side!

Leaves

The leaves are changing and falling.

I suppose it is time. They must fall in the Fall.

Far Guy mulched (chopped up) the leaves the other day.  Round one is done…about nine more to go.

I cannot drive the lawn mower yet…maybe next week.  I could kinda drive the buggy in the grocery store yesterday….with more than one hand.  So that is an improvement.

Changing fast

It is cool and rainy here.  We should be at peak leaf color in a few days.

Getting Older

I think we need a notebook.  Someone in this household is having a memory problem.  Just sayin’ I cannot remember or be in charge of everything so I think a notebook will be added to the list.   A very important paper was not lost..just hiding in a secure place…just not a real obvious place.  The property tax bill was not paid just because we talked about it…I wish it was that simple.

Sometimes we put “stuff” away so good it disappears forever.  Someday I may find all the lost socks, papers, photos, mittens and keys, just not today.

Maple leaves

Sometimes we forget we have our snow boots on with a pair of shorts because our feet were just a tiny bit cold and it was a quick fix..until we had to run to the store and forgot all about our toasty warm feet.  Sometimes we have too many pairs of shoes near the doorway and go to town with two different shoes on.  Oh well..life goes on.

I am tired of wondering who the heck that person was that was talking to me like I was their long lost friend.  Next time I will come right out and ask “What is your name..or I know you but I just cannot come up with your name at the moment.”  It might all be a false alarm, just some elderly guy/gal trying to mess with your already aged confused mind.

Many of our neighbors are moving to apartments and some to assisted living facilities.  Home places will be left behind, some have lived there all their lives.  Those places will never be the same even after new people move in…IF new people move in.

On the way to town, I watched an old farmstead all summer long.  The land around it was cleared for the corporate farmer, the trees went down one by one, soon I could see the silo like never before. It was like a beacon over the cornfield.   The house and barn were gutted and in less that a week all traces of that farmstead that was homesteaded back in the late 1880’s disappeared.  POUF just like that gone. No marker  to remember the spot…just another field put into the corn, potato, wheat, bean rotation.

Some things never change…like the white house with the blue trim where I stop to take photographs. Some days a little bit of normal with no change goes a long way:)

Fall Color This Week

It has been raining and cold all of October, the fall color is not yet peak, maybe by the weekend. I am tired of the rain, and the dreariness..I need me some sunshine. I have to wear socks with my crocs now, either that or get out my snow boots.

Our Burr Oaks are turning brown and the leaves are starting to litter the ground. I have to wait for the lawn furniture to dry out before putting it away for the winter. After a couple of frosts..the bugs are pretty much gone..except for the Deer Ticks, the little tiny ones, about the size of a pin head. Chance had a couple crawling on him. We have way too many deer, if someone was allowed to control the deer population..we wouldn't have so many ticks. I like deer, just not so many of them.

The driveway has a little color. It was a different kind of summer for us, cool and dry, Fall is starting out wet and cold, and the leaves seem to be taking their sweet time losing their chlorophyll.

We went for a drive yesterday afternoon, over in the Pickerel Lake area, the fall colors are coming along. They have some colorful Maples over there. The Minnesota DNR web site has us at 50 to 75 percent color. I would say that report is pretty accurate.

I love the rich colors that the turning leaves assault your eyes with. It is a triumphant end to their summer season..the last hurrah..before the snowy cold death like fingers of winter grab out and strangle them until spring sunshine orders winter to surrender the trees held in a wintery trance:)
