Christmas 1978

All those old Christmas photos are treasures.  I do not recall what gifts were exchanged other than the gift of Family.
My Mother wrote on this photo the year 1978.   My sister Julie (age 12), our daughters Trica (age 6) and Jennifer (age 3)
Not sure what my sister was telling Jen ...probably say cheese.  Looks like Trica was in first grade as she has some missing front teeth.  Jen has a Raggedy Ann doll that I do not recall at all.

The Nativity set in the background was ceramic and I made it one year as a gift for my Mother. The tree was in the corner of the living room in my parents home on Straight Lake.  I see tinsel and satin balls.

I am still not sure what my Mother was thinking with the choice of carpeting! Uffda high low shag.

Christmas was always celebrated the same; church on Christmas Eve, after church my Mother would disappear and begin her last minute gift wrapping...there would be knocks at the door and neighbors would join in the festivities...my Mother invited everyone for Christmas Eve.  There was food and plenty to drink...it was always terribly cold outside...Minnesota ..freeze your butt off cold.  The next morning was church and the rest of the day was spent at my Grandparents home.

  1. I love looking at old photos like this one, even if they aren't my own. So many details to absorb.

  3. Goodness. I recall 1978. That was the year I left home or...was tossed out whichever. I spent my first Christmas away from family. But that was okay as I was a newly wed and spent Xmas with his family.
That carpeting. Um. That is all I will say!
It does look like a time of laughter and joy though!

  5. this photo is a treasure for your family and I know your family will love seeing it. I remember my MIL making a ceramic Nativity set. This too is a treasure. The carpet was in "IN THING" back in the 70's. Sounds like you all celebrated some wonderful Christmas's as a family.

  6. Growing up in Minnesota I can't remember any Christmas that wasn't cold and snowy. We did go to Kansas a couple of times at Christmas to see my paternal grandparents - and my memories of that are brown and icy. LOL What a fun photo to bring out the memories! 1978 would have been the first Christmas after we moved from Iowa (and good jobs) to my husband's family farm. My tree looked much like the one in your photo, and so did the carpet in the house which had been my in-laws. Our carpet however had lots of gold, but the wallpaper had a lot of orange in it.

  7. I love hearing your memories. The carpet like that was popular....when moved to Indiana my sister put it in one room. It was fall colors and I LOVED it...but was probably the colors more than the style of carpet. Autumn has always made my heart sing.

  10. Wonderful memories!
Our Christmas Eve was generally spent with my uncle, aunt and their six children in town. Christmas Day was mom's birthday and a couple down the road would arrive for coffee in the morning to give Mom her b'day card - always with 4 quarters taped inside. We had to wait for them to leave before we could open gifts. Boxing day the cousins and their parents came to our house. I remember chaos!

  12. 1978 was the first year we were married. We spent Christmas with his parents most years and it was wonderful. I've always had that tinsel on our trees until this little one we have this year.
My mil had that same carpet in the family room! I thought it was so cool. Now I think, yuck! :-)
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  17. Wonderful family memories. I only have a few old Christmas photos, but some scenes are indelible in my mind. It's all about family, of course.

  18. I like the picture from the past and your memories of Christmas. That year (1978) we moved twice in 6 months with our 5 children ages 6 months to 12 years. Not surprising that I hardly remember much. GM

  19. Precious memories. We lost all our photos from childhood when our house burned down in 1969.
