Grocery pickup was uneventful on Thursday. Far Guy had an x ray at the clinic...we had a few extra minutes to wait in town so we drove out to "The Point"
We found a sculpture ...the ant one. Why not some art at the point.
In the afternoon I had bookclub. We discussed Life in a Jar The Irena Sendler Project by Jack Mayer. I found the whole book just sad, I was sad for the children, sad for the parents, sad that no one knew what horrible things the Nazis were doing to the Jews. Even when people spoke of the horrors no one believed them...not even Churchill or Roosevelt. Irena Sendler was a small beacon of light...she rescued 2,500 children....either orphans or children given up by their parents. I give the book a 9 out of 10.
Next month is a recipe book...that will not be as sad.

Hope Far Guy's x-ray turns out okay. I think I would rather read a recipe book than a sad book. But I am glad people are reading books about how horrible the Nazis' were turning WWII. Have a wonder Fourth of July weekend.
ReplyDeleteA recipe book for book club - that does sound like fun. Whenever I read a book dealing with the Holocaust it makes me think of my host mother when I was an exchange student in Germany in high school (1971). She was a young teen during that time frame and lived in a town next to one of the concentration camps. I asked her why people in town did nothing to help the Jews in the camp. And what she said has always stuck with me - that anyone who asked questions or tried to help "disappeared" too, most likely into the camp as prisoners or just executed. She said everyone turned a blind eye out of fear. So sad.
ReplyDeletePraying for good results from the xray. That sculture is "interesting". My opinion on such things is pretty bad. I just don't understand a lot of modern art. We once went to a museum in London full of modern "art". There was literally a toilet seat hanging from the ceiling on a string and people were oohing and ahhing and inspecting it. From a distance of course because it was "art".
ReplyDeleteI fear we're doomed to repeat history because so many people are denying the holocaust yet again. I would rather read a recipe book but I know it's important to remember and not make the same mistakes again.

I think I can do better than you Betsy. I visited the museum of modern art in Sydney Australia, and came across an exhibition of scrumpled up paper tissues (they looked used) dangling from lengths of cotton. Some modern art is great. Some I can manage without.
DeleteThe whole NAZI THING DID NOT EXIST movement is just so wrong. I'm glad there are books out there which prove it different. My neighbors a mile away were caught in that horrid mess --- walked out hiding from the Nazis carrying babies and small children. My oldest daughter's husband's mother was a Jewish orphan...their live prove it was a terrible time.
ReplyDeleteMy youngest daughter tries to tell me about some of the sad books she reads and I always say the same thing... "I have enough to be sad about, in my own life & the world, I don't need to be voluntarily taking on more sadness by reading sad books." Especially about children, OMG! ReplyDeleteThe ant art is interesting. It might make me feel a bit itchy! The book sounds like something we should all know, but it does also sound quite sad. I hope the recipe book is not sad, that would be some bad recipes!

DeleteI've seen both The Courageuos Heart of Irena Sendler and Irena Sendler: In The Name of Their Mothers and I think ran across something else about her on a British YouTube channel, too. But I never read the book. Brave, remarkable woman!

I found it interesting or sad to know that my dad was at the Rhine River with all the soldiers invading Germany approximately a month after Anne Frank was killed. He was at the Remagen Bridge, a bridge too far.
