Booster reactions

Both of our arms were really sore!

After the covid booster Far Guy felt like he had been hit by a truck, he had the chills, headache and body aches.

As per my normal reaction...a fever and fatigue.  I slept all night Friday and most of Saturday.  I was somewhat achy...but again that is normal for me.

Between the two of us we managed a trip to the transfer station to get rid of our garbage and together we managed supper...which was pretty easy we just warmed up leftovers from the fridge.

Far Guy woodcarved outside for awhile.  I managed to paint a few Christmas ornaments.

Our old place on the lake....we lived there nine years (1986-1995).  That is the boathouse that is directly on the lake.

Wistful Wednesday: Mate on the Roof

G'Day Mate was Far Guy's dog, I gave her to him so he wouldn't be tempted to sell her.  She was from a litter of four from our Misty and Moses, both Registered Shetland Sheepdogs or Shelties.

She was stubborn as the day is long.  She spent most of her life as a juvenile delinquent.
Who else would be on the roof.

Far Guy was continually fixing the valley on this roof at the house at the resort.  Mate was born in 1986 so this must have been 1988 -1990 or so.

Wistful Wednesday: The Boat House

The Boat House at the resort on Straight Lake.

Last summer.

IMG_2593

Not the greatest photo with the sunspot.  But you get the idea.   It has a stone foundation.

In 1989

Boat House August 1989

We used to keep the lawn mowed close to the lake.  I almost went into the lake a few times with the lawn mower making a circle on the bottom of that hill.

The steps on the left are still looking good.  Far Guy and I used railroad ties and rebar and leveled the dirt between the ties with a shovel.  It took us most of an afternoon.  We were younger then.

Most structures cannot be this close to the lake anymore.  This boat house was most likely built in the 1920’s.

The downstairs was used for storage of life jackets, tackle, extra anchors, boat cleaning supplies and a tub of night crawlers that we harvested ourselves and sold on the honor system.

The upstairs was a great place to sit and play cards or look at the lake.  We had many tables and chairs, a ping pong table, a pop machine, and a couple of pin ball machines and bookshelves with books and games.  If we had a gathering..like a confirmation or graduation or wedding shower if it was in late spring, summer or early fall it was a perfect place to host a gathering when you were going to feed a whole bunch of people.

Wistful Wednesday : Christmas 1991

We lived at the lake in 1991. ( Just a half a mile from where we live now.)  I was running the resort and Far Guy was commuting 180 miles every day…90 miles in the morning and 90 miles at night.  He went through a couple of cars.

Jennifer was a Sophomore in High School and Trica was in her second year at Moorhead State University.   We had quite a menagerie of animals…a goat, horses, rabbits, cats and dogs.
Christmas 1991
Me with Captain and Moses, Jennifer with Misty and G’Day Mate, Far Guy, Trica with Caramel.   We had at least one other cat named Shadow and possibly one called Snowballs Chance in Hell…Snowball or Snowy for short. (We were his hospice home for two years.)

The tree was a little short that year…I think it might have been a fake tree…as I was tired of pine pitch and needles and a fire hazard in the house.

Back then we were both on the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department and on Boards at Church, we were so busy.   Sometimes I wonder how we did it all, but we were younger then!

I am not sure who took this photo, it was most likely taken the day after Christmas…the photographer might have been Richard ( to be son in law.)  I know he was around then because Caramel was a gift to Trica from him.  Edit: Some other boyfriend named Kelly gave her Caramel. She already had a cat named Shadow from a former boyfriend…good thing she didn’t have too many more boyfriends.

Resort 1987

In the Fall of 1986 we were really restless, although we liked living “in town” we didn’t feel it was the best place to raise teenagers. We lived in Moorhead back then and Far Guy worked in Fargo for the North Dakota Air National Guard and was often gone TDY (Temporary Duty).  Our house was small a two bedroom one bath with a huge yard.

We began to look at properties outside of town…rural properties. The girls were 11 and 14.  Trica wanted a horse so country life would be a plus for her, Jennifer just wanted to live in town forever and go to the local 7-11/Stop n Go Store every day.

One day we got a phone call with an interesting offer.  Would we be interested in buying an old resort that had been struck by a tornado and was in total disrepair?  My parents owned a resort on the same lake and were not interested.  Oh my, it sounded good and the price was right.   We knew the people from Indiana that had a mechanics lien on the property…they just wanted their original loan amount back…if we didn’t want the resort they wouldn’t pursue the Quit Claim process. After a few minutes of discussion we said “yes.”

One day in the summer of 1987 we sat in the Lawyer’s Office to finalize the papers for the sale.  The Attorney asked Koons and Elsie if they were sure that they wanted to sell the property that they had acquired the day before for the same amount that they had tied up in it ….I guess it seemed too good to be true to the lawyer.  And possibly a little strange as our house had not sold yet so the bulk of the down payment was in the form of an IOU when the house sold. The lawyer asked again if they were sure, he said “Their home may never sell.”  Koons and Elsie said “Well it is a nice home, sooner or later someone will buy it.”

The house sold two months later.  We needed those two months to do repairs.

The first day we went to the resort, Jennifer was stung by a couple of wasps.  We had to break into one of the cottages through a window so we would have a place to clean up and sleep overnight.  Water had to be carried in and there were several outhouses.

The first morning we were there Trica came out of the cottage and asked “Where is this out house?”  we pointed the way.  She walked down the road to the outhouse opened the door and peered inside…she closed the door and walked back to the cottage to wake up her little sister to accompany her.

We had two Shetland Sheepdogs  “Shelties” back then Misty and Moses. Misty is down by the end of that log and Moses is running to meet her.   They would discover that fish washed up on shore were wonderful to roll in. In this photo is a cottage on the left, the old shower house/bath house and two outhouses.

It was a few days until we could have the power company come out and get us some electricity.
Gene and Marvin July 1987 Resort copy
Far Guy and his Dad having a lunch break.  The resort gave Marvin something to do in his retirement, there was always something that needed fixing or a granddaughter that needed a ride home after a school activity.

Getting water was the worst…the resort sat vacant for a number of years.  Mice had fallen in the well and had to be fished out…not a job for the weak stomached.  Once the sand point was pulled up, replaced and the mice removed, the well was sanitized and tested so that we knew the water was drinkable.

Once we had water the next step was getting rid of sewage…the resort had a lift station that lifted the sewage to a drain field…my other baby brother and Far Guy took on that crappy job.

Having electricity, water and sewer were a big start to making the place livable.  My Mother told us that the house was so bad it should be bulldozed down…yet we managed to live there for nine years.  Lots of elbow grease and some paint made a big difference.

Far Guy would commute 180 miles round trip for nine years.   He would go through two cars.  The girls would adjust to country/lake living…although the adjustments are never easy when you move to a new house and a new school.  The resort would not officially open until the summer of 1988.

Stone Masons

A long time ago a stone mason built a stone fireplace at our old resort, it was falling apart, we repaired it the best we could.   It was a beautiful fireplace with a metal door and a tall chimney.  We put wire racks above the fire box.  It would roast a few marshmallows or fry up a couple of hot dogs.  I must have an old photo of it someplace.
I found one!
Marvin and the fireplace
Far Guy’s Dad Marvin fixing a picnic table/ bench…you can see someone has started a fire in the outdoor fireplace…I think Far Guy is back behind the fireplace breaking up some small sticks of wood…or goofing off. Photo taken by me in August 1989 Pine Springs Resort, Osage Township, Becker County Minnesota.
Boat House August 1989
The whole foundation of the boat house at the resort was stone.  We think that a stone mason stayed and worked at the resort and the surrounding area in the 1920’s.  Some of the driveways at the resort had stone walls…right outside our home was about a three foot high stone wall…it was a great place for snakes so I never sat there.
Arvilla and Carl had a stone piece in their yard.  They moved here in 1953 and the structure was there when they moved in.  ( Carl and Arvilla lived right across the road from the resort. Jolynn and Steve live there now.)
IMG_8560
Arvilla always planted it with Red Geraniums…and Jolynn is carrying on the tradition.
Arvilla's Flowers
I think this might have been a wishing well at one time…or a fountain or a bird bath/flower planter.  The top has been repaired.  It was more than likely built in the 1920’s to 1930’s.
Refuge
Over at Tamarac Wildlife Refuge one of the picnic areas has a stone wall.
Stone work at Linnell Cemetery
Over at Linnell Cemetery there are stone walls at the main entrance.

There are a few other places where old stone work can be seen.  I should probably photograph them all.  One of the nearby “estates” has a stone porch and several stone buildings….I suppose in the name of history I could get myself invited over for coffee.

Wistful Wednesday: Chuck and Ardith

A month ago I told our youngest daughter.  “I have some sad news for you, your bestest friend in the whole world died.”  She replied “Oh Chuck died… that is sad.”

Chuck was a thorn in her (teenage) side for two weeks every summer.  He would come to the door and ask  “Can Jenny come out to play?”  When she hollered “NO” at him he would press his nose against the window of the piano room until she would draw the curtains and play piano so loudly she couldn’t hear him.  He would walk away shaking his head saying “I don’t know how they put up with that racket.”   He irritated her and she irritated him.  When he would first show up for his time at the lake she would greet him by saying “Aren’t you dead yet?” He would answer her “No and is that anyway to talk to your bestest friend in the whole world.”

Chuck was from Indiana, he was a Deputy Sheriff and a Jailer…one time he even ran for Sheriff.  He and his wife Ardith would vacation up here the last couple of weeks in August when it was the warmest in Indiana.  Chuck fished everyday he could, Ardith sewed. Ardith was a banker and the church organist, they vacationed with children and grandchildren for one of the weeks and the other was usually their quiet time.

High on their list was going out for supper.

Chuck etc 2000

Chuck, Gene, Me, Ardith, Sue and Keith (Chucks brother)

The waitress took this photo at Y’s Steakhouse in September of 2000.

We found our way to Chuck and Ardith’s home in Indiana one Fall and had a wonderful visit with them.  They had the cover on their pool and Chance thought it was just a blue tarp…and walked right out on it. Talk about a confused looking dog!

Sadly Ardith would suffer with large cancerous tumors in her abdomen that eventually took her life in 2011.  Chuck was very lonely after Ardith died.  He called a few times to talk and then the calls became fewer and fewer. He came up on vacation a few times but his last visit two years ago he didn’t even attempt to go fishing. Chuck joined Ardith in heaven on October 10 2015.

Chuck had a wonderful sense of humor and could tell stories for hours. Sometimes you didn’t know if he was pulling your leg or not.   He used to kidnap Captain one of our Shelties, Captain could be found in their cottage quite often …for nap time and a snack.

Chuck and Ardith were good friends. It is sad that they are both gone…times change and people die.  But it is still good to have friends that can make you smile long after they are gone.

Wistful Wednesday : Tourist Friends

Owning a fishing resort for many years we have many out of state friends.  My parents purchased their resort in 1975, we purchased ours just down the lake in 1986.

These photos feature a few of our tourist friends.

1995 Supper with friends On the left side: Mark, Kay, Elsie, Koons, Gene (just barely can see his head) and Far Guy’s  Mom Evelyn.  Right side: Joanne, Me ( you can see my hands) Jennifer, my Mother and Dad.

Jennifer most likely has her head on the table because Ardith said “Jennifer I cannot see you!” Ardith was the picture taker…always had a camera in her purse.  At the end of the table I think I see Bonnie and her husband and Chuck and Ardith must have been sitting at that end of the table….I am certain they were there.

1995 Supper with friends two

On this photo you can see me and Lester at the end of the table. Boy my hair was blonde….summer blonde I think they called that spray in color!

The photo was taken in August or September of 1995.  We all went the the Friday Night Steak Fry at the American Legion in Park Rapids Minnesota.  Back then a steak, baked potato, bread and salad with a cuppa coffee was $7.00….with all proceeds going for Nursing Scholarships of which our oldest daughter Trica was a recipient one year.

Lester and Joanne are farmers from South Dakota.  Lester died a few years ago.  Everyone else is from Indiana.  Kay was a Chicken Sexer.  She worked in a hatchery separating the boys from the girls.  Kay was full of fun and laughter she died of a Heart Attack two years after this photo was taken.  Elsie and Koons are both gone too…Koons in 2000 and Elsie in 2011, they were very special friends.  Far Guy’s Mom died in 2006.

Mark has since remarried…to Teresa.  Life goes on…he lives right across the street from the Feed Store he manages and real close to the Fire Hall.

Many of the tourists that came to our resort were from Indiana…no fuss people, they were happy to be out on the lake fishing.  ( Not big party keep you up all night types.)

Twenty years has passed just like that.

First Day of Summer

The first day of summer brought us some warm temperatures.  The high was 82 F or 27 C eh!  It was mostly sunny.  I did some odd jobs outside before company arrived.

Jen, Andy and Adam came to visit and take us out for an early supper.  Before that we went over to our old resort just down the road to identify a  smelly weed for Dave and admire the Showy Lady’s Slippers.

Years ago, probably in 1987 Far Guy noticed two Lady’s Slippers coming up on both sides of a log in the back yard at the resort.   Of course we moved the log and put a fence around the Lady’s Slippers. We have continued to admire them throughout the years.

Lady Slipper Buds

A couple of buds. Note how hairy the foliage is…some people break out in a rash kinda like poison ivy after touching the foliage.

Lady Slipps at the resort

There are so many of them it is hard to get a photo of just one flower.

Far Guys Lady Slippers

I counted at least sixty flowers/buds…and I know I missed a few.

Dave’s weed that is a bit smelly is Creeping Charlie and there is nothing much that contains/controls it.  I also looked at his Apple Trees (Haralred) and a row of Nanking Cherries that he is growing for the birds.  The Cherries are sparse but I saw a few apples starting to form even though Haralred is self sterile and needs a pollinator.  As far as I know there are no Flowering Crapapples or Apple Trees in the immediate area for cross pollination.

Happy first day of summer!

Wistful Wednesday : Pine Springs Resort Cottages

When we purchased the resort back in 1986 all the cottages were different colors of green.  I like green and chose a pale green color to paint everything.  It was quite a project.

All the Cottages had strange names too.

Waco was a cottage they removed and the sign was stuck and grown into a Willow Tree.

Wewoka became Aspen ( I wanted some kind of order)

Sioux City ?? became  Birch

St. Louis?? became  Cedar

South Omaha  ?? or maybe St. Charles??  became Maple

Tulsa became  Oak

Cherokee became Pine

  Kansas City became  Spruce

Willow didn’t have a proper name, they used it for storage.

The Fish Cleaning house was named Colfax because the first people who cleaned fish were from Colfax Iowa.

I am getting older and don’t quite remember which was which I may have Sioux City and St. Louis mixed up. We always laughed at that name Wewoka.. We woka up!   They were originally named for towns of the first guests.

I have a video someplace, few of the old photos have names that you can read…and none of the photos are marked with cottage names..just dates.  Another winter project.

Our daughters may remember.

Resort 1995 MN

The pontoon on the left was called Big Blue, Far Guy bought it for ten dollars.  It nearly sank as water came over the boards as Art and Kathy towed us home after we bought it.  It was beached and the pontoons were repaired and a new deck was installed. Some of my favorite times was when we loading up a cooler and the grill and heading out in front of the resort to cook supper and ignore the ringing phone on a Friday night...we had an outside bell that rang when the phone rang. Saturday was work day…cleaning those cottages kept me busy.

The stone foundation boat house on the edge of the lake is all that remains. Boat house and bait on the lower level and the upper level was a Recreation Room.

Wistful Wednesday: Pine Springs and Mowing

Years ago 1986 to 1995 we owned a small fishing resort.  It had eight cottages and a campground.  Far Guy worked in Fargo and commuted 92 miles one way 184 miles everyday.  I ran the resort. The girls were in 9th grade and 6th grade when we moved them out of the city to the boonies.

Mowing was a big deal.  The grounds had to be well groomed.  The girls spent a fair amount of time on the mower..as did I.

We had an old Toro riding mower that was almost worthless.  Sometimes it ran and sometimes it didn’t.  Of course we had a push mower too.   The hillside was a bugger and was best mowed by making downhill  attacks and then circling around to the top of the hill again and again.  Far Guy would mow it sitting half on and half off the tractor seat.

Mowing was best done on turnover day which was Saturday or when everyone was out fishing or off to town.  I was known for trying to drive up power poles.  I tried to drive up trees too…especially the two times I was in a cast..once from a surgery and once for broken bones in my foot.  Sometimes I would take off to mow without my crutches…one time I ran out of gas and crawled to one of the docks.  The girls never noticed that I was missing, the dogs kept me company until Far Guy came home and asked “Where is your Mother?”

View in fromt of Maple 4 at the resort MN

One year I had it with old junky mowers.  I called Far Guy and said I was going to drive that Toro off the dock into the lake.  He said “You better not, someone will fine you for polluting the lake.”

I went to the bank and got a loan for a new riding mower.  I think I needed $1,200 to purchase it.  I had to see the loan officer ( he and I graduated from high school together).  He asked me what I had for collateral other than projected income from the resort.  I said “I have a 1985 Ford Bronco II and two registered Shetland Sheepdogs.”  He wanted to know what Far Guy had too.. I said “Wait a minute, I am the one that wants the loan. Whatever his income is doesn’t count.”  I got the loan, and paid it off in three months.   Cash flow is sometimes a problem with a summer business.

Mulching blades, electric start…it was a real honey of a mower.  It had a leaf bagger attachment and every fall I would spend at least 7 days picking up leaves.

The resort is private property now, one fellow lives there.  The cottages have all been sold and moved elsewhere.  Now we live just a half a mile down the road.

Mrs. B. and Pastor B.

Mrs. B lived next door to us at the lake. We bought our old Resort and they bought the neighboring lake home the same year. She and her husband were retired. She was a very outspoken woman. She was a tiny little woman who must have topped the scales at 95 pounds soaking wet, with silvery grey short practical hair.

The very first time I met her she said "Hi, Welcome to the neighborhood, I am Mrs. B and I hate dogs." I tried not to burst out laughing when I replied "Nice to meet you, I love dogs." I don't beat around the bush much either. Each of us knew immediately where the other stood on that issue. She did not want any of our dogs at her place. We only had two dogs at that time, Misty and Moses both Shetland Sheepdogs or better known as "Shelties." There was a big patch of woods and brush between our properties, if Far Guy walked over there without putting the dogs in the house, they would follow him, and then eagle eyed Mrs. B would holler "Your Dogs are here." She really did have an eagle eye too and ears. She hated red squirrels at her bird feeders and would blast them into to oblivion, sometimes if I was outside I would hit the ground until the shooting stopped. If she baked something for us, she would call and say I am delivering something to you right away, put your dogs in the house. Only then would she walk over, I used to meet her outside and walk part way back with her. She was a really good baker.

Her gardens were all perfect, weeds were not allowed to grow anywhere. Their lawn was perfect. We liked dandies over at our place they are partly green and a wonderful cheerful yellow. She had a hat that made her look like someone lost in the Amazon. It was beige and wide brimmed with mosquito netting sewed all around. The mosquito netting tied up around her neck, not that too many mosquitoes would actually have the audacity to bite her..but just in case she wore her get up anyway. The mosquito netting was so dark you wondered if it was really Mrs. B ..it was the long sleeved white gardening shirts that gave her away, and the gloves.

In the spring when it was muddy, they left their car at the end of the driveway and hiked in so their driveway wouldn't get all full of deep ruts. Their car wouldn't get muddy either. Our drive was muddy and rut filled, I refused to hike carrying bags of groceries, and our vehicles looked like big mud balls.

One Christmas Eve, we were at Church, a blizzard warning was out. We left for home, Mrs. B and her husband were just fifteen minutes behind us. She walked in front of the car for the last two miles, because they could not see the road. That was the Christmas Eve Blizzard of 1993.

I tried my best to get into Church after they were seated, because sitting in the pew behind or in front of them could be your worst nightmare. If we got into Church first, they often sat behind or in front of us. On one such occasion, our teenage girls got the giggles, you know the kind of giggles that you just can't stop. I prayed for them to be able to stop, It did not work. Mrs. B turned around and scowled at the girls and me, which made the girls giggle even more. After Church I had to remind Mrs. B that children are gifts from God and in my case giggling gifts from God.

She called to complain on a regular basis, the people in the campground were too loud at night. She heard them talking after eight at night. If the girls had their music on too loud outside, the phone would ring off the hook. We had an outside bell that rang when the phone rang, she could hear it from her place, she would never leave a message on the machine, she would just hang up and call again..until I finally answered. I was tempted to buy her earplugs.

She would have her Grandkids for a week during the summer, we would ask them over for Campfires at night, but they were never allowed up past seven, she had them on a strict schedule for their entire visit and there was no disrupting the schedule.

Everything was neat as a pin inside her house. "Everything in it's place." There was no dust, the windows were always sparking clean, not a speck of dirt was on the floor. She had a rigid schedule, of washing, ironing, baking, and cleaning all which happened on the appropriately chosen day.

I think that Mrs. B was a perfect Lutheran Pastors wife, she had a picture of what that was and aspired to it everyday of her life. I know she loved her children and grandchildren..but did she really enjoy them? She loved her husband, but she kept him in line. He ate what and when she said. He often would sneak a piece of candy or a cookie with his coffee at our house and tell me "Don't tell Mrs. B" He walked over to visit quite often, he liked the dogs, the cats and the teenagers. He always had some funny story to tell or have words of encouragement to share. He was one of the few people that used my shortened name "Con". He and I shared a saying "sounded like a bunch of dying quails" ..we both would share that with the Pastor that would pick out one of those totally unsingable songs found in The Lutheran Hymnal.

I thought about that this past Christmas Eve, when we were supposed to sing "On Christmas Night All Christians Sing." Now that must be such an old hymn that only a few really hard core Lutherans have ever heard it much less sung it..especially on Christmas Eve. And yes it did sound just like dying quails:)
