Chilly evenings

The evenings have turned chilly.  We disconnected the water hoses just incase there is a hard frost.  I carry water in my old watering can for the bird bath and the dog water dish. (Baxter is back!)

Yesterday was an odds and ends day with a nap in the middle.  I finished painting the garage door!  The high yesterday was 69 F or 21 C  eh!  Cross something off my list!    I finally made a list.  If I cross something off the list every day I will be done at the end of the month.

The chilly nights bring out the worst in the hornets/wasps.  They are especially bad in town.  They seem to like the fronts of cars...not sure what attracts them...the warmth or saying goodbye to friends who were suicidal and hanging off the front grille.   I can report that my crochet wasp nests work great at keeping them from building their nests near the house.

I sat outside after supper last night watching for the solar lights and my baby brother, his bride and Baxter stopped by to watch with me.  Baxter may have gotten a treat or three.

The leaves are changing color more every day I think we are near peak color.

  1. Never thought about wasp decoy nests. Since my oldest knows how to crochet, perhaps I will have to have her make a couple. I have just gone on cool mornings in the spring and right now to scrape them off where they are near where we frequent.

  2. I had a nest of wasps last fall, but managed to kill them off with some pesticide. I did pull out the nest and burn it this spring and filled the hole in the siding of the shed where they had gotten in. I'm sure they are just looking for warmth but the thought of them attending the funeral of their suicidal friends makes me giggle.

  4. Sounds like a great day! Door is done, water is off and a Baxter visit. We had frost on the cars, but it is Ohio. Cooler next week, but it is not unusual to have a random day in October in the 80's.

  6. Your leaves are ahead of ours. The weather has been really nice, although rain would be welcome.

  8. Early October sounds lovely there. Having family that can just drop by and enjoy the early evening with you sounds wonderful. And Baxter!

  9. Had to laugh at the idea of the wasps saying goodbye to their suicidal friends! And am very glad that your crochet nests are working so well.
Those leaves have a gorgeous colour. Good luck with crossing off your list of jobs :)

  10. Light watching is a new one for me. I am glad you had good company. Baxter was glad to get some treats. I have one tree down the street that is now turning colors. Your colors are really great this year.

  13. We've had chilly nights but days in the upper 70's. We're enjoying it very much. We'll take our last camping trip planned for this season this week. We're also house/apartment hunting but not having much luck. There is just not much on the market right now.
Good for you getting so much done. I n eed to make up a list and stick to it.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  14. The colors are so beautiful. And the temps are nice right now too. Sure wish our new furnace would come in. Somebody stole my facebook account yesterday.....never a dull moment in this life. Lord have mercy.

  15. Beautiful leaves. Our ash trees are quickly turning golden but not seeing much color yet on the maples. We’ve had a terrible time with wasps and hornets this summer around our deck. Dave keeps spraying the nests and live bugs, but a week or so later they are back. I haven’t sat outside on that back deck even once this summer for fear of being stung.

  16. What a funny way of saying it...suicidal wasps.

They are out in force but not on my porch where I hung fake nests! However the boxelders and the Asian beetles are swarming since the soybeans are drying up.
    Yuck.
