My niece Katie shared some scrubbies with me that she made. I was hooked ( pun intended). She shared the pattern with me. If you are interested you can search for the pattern at Red Heart. It is a free download. It is a simple pattern if you can chain and do a double crochet you can do it!
I got some of my scrubby yarn at Ben Franklin, then I found some at Hobby Lobby, then at a Hometown Craft store…but you can order it online. Price per skein will be $4 something. Not sure how many I get out of a skein. The skeins are small.
There is even a sparkly holiday looking yarn…I am almost out of that one.
I use two different types of scrubby yarn…polyester or cotton. They both seem to work well. I throw mine into the washer with kitchen towels and then into the dryer. Some are not perfect because in this project I want no left over yarn…see that one red one… part red and part red and white.
I roll my skeins into balls as soon as I get them. I dislike yarn that tangles. This is a fun project for me to work on in the evenings when watching television as it doesn’t take much concentration. I can grab my basket with the balls and crochet right out of the basket and not chase the balls all over the room.
I have collected the netting from Orange and Halo bags for a long time…it is a someday project to make strips and sew the strips together to crochet scrubbies…someday.
I learned to knit as a teenager, my Aunt Marie taught me. I learned to crochet in 1979-1980 my friend Kathy taught me. Some place I have an old book one half is How to Crochet and the other is How to Knit. Before the internet where you can watch You Tubes about anything you want to learn…we had books…and friends who shared their talents.
I taught myself to crochet from a book in the late 70's. The funny thing is that I keep my hook stationary and move the yarn because that was how it looked in the pictures! But it works.
ReplyDeleteA friend taught me how to crochet after we had gone to a midnight movie and someone set off a tear gas bomb. That cleared the theater! It was 1948 and boys were ornery then. I have enjoyed crocheting. Not so much knitting because I am one of the world's slowest knitters.
ReplyDeleteMy Nan taught me to knit. I was about 9 when she taught me. She let me have her little scraps of wool to make scarves, hats, and blankets for my dolls.
ReplyDeleteNice variety of colors! I knit scrubbies out of tulle before the Scrubby yarn was available: the yarn is easier on my hands.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the information about the scrubbies. I will definitely be looking at the pattern. My grandma taught me to crochet when I was seven, but it was only about 15 years ago I taught myself to knit using YouTube. I couldn’t find anybody to teach me and I really wanted to learn. I loved being able to pause and rewind the videos until I understood. It’s snowing here again this morning. Hope you have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteBlessings always,
Betsy
I learned how to knit when I was a kid, but I have tried to learn how to crochet several times over my lifetime and am a total failure at it. Maybe there's a knitting pattern for scrubbies--LOL! ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your information! I've always worked with sewing and quilting but I would like to get into the yarn side of things.
ReplyDeleteI learned to knit when I was a kid, did it in 4H, met once a week with others, can't remember, but they were probably kids like me. Knit one sweater a year to show at the 4H fair. Learned to crochet later, a friend at work showed me. You are right. Before the internet we had friends.
ReplyDeleteThey look good, I cannot knit or crochet tried to learn but couldn't get the hang of it
ReplyDeleteSure wish that I could learn to crochet or knot. I hadn't thought about watching YouTube. The little scrubbies look fun to make
ReplyDeleteI prefer learning something from a book or another person, not you-tube. Can't stand all the annoying music and chatter when I'm trying to get the basics. Phil
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the pattern! I already printed it off. There are lots of different ones for the holidays but after my fiasco with the other pattern I am sticking with something basic. I love all yours in the different colors. Your Christmas goodies in the picture look so pretty! Are those all presents ready to give? Stay warm and cozy and when do the shiny brites come out?
ReplyDeleteI like knitting better than crochet, but both of them are fun things to do with my hands, to keep me from eating in the evenings. Thanks for telling me where to get the pattern; I might have to take up crochet again. :-)
ReplyDeleteI have made several of these and love them. I have both knitted and crocheted them. They are a fun and quick project.
