173rd Day of Winter

Spring doesn’t magically appear.

sedum in winter

The wind still blows and picks up its icy coldness from the snow.  It still snows. The lakes are still frozen and there is talk that there will still be ice on the lakes for Fishing Opener in May.  Someone said there is 28 –38 inches of ice on the lakes…that takes time and warmth to melt…more warmth than we have had.

My half way decent pair of snowboots (Uggs bought about 7 years ago) have a hole on the right side of the right foot…guess they are not half way decent anymore…Far Guy said throw them away…well duh…I will when winter is over. He said “Your not going to wear them to town are you?”  I did and no one even noticed. (town has no old snowboot police)  I have a brand new pair of winter boots bought on sale before winter  but to get them out now when we have mud would not be a good way to break those in even if they are brown.  My other pair of worn out boots (because I patched a hole with a leather patch)…have yak traks on them.  I have a perfect pair of red muck boots to wear but they are so cold…I shiver just thinking of it.  It isn’t even dry enough or warm enough for crocs with socks.

I want to put my full length parka away but I use it some mornings when Chance wants me to go outside with him.  I want to put away my Grinch stocking cap but people at Bingo might not recognize me without it.  I want to put away the snow shovel and the ice chisel. I just want winter to be over with.

Yes it snowed again on Sunday night not much but it is still snow.

  1. This ENDLESS winter does not deserve new snow boots. I say, save them for the fresh one coming in, oh, 6 months! 😝

  2. With this much snow at this time, when spring does come and may come quickly, what is the forecast for flooding? Do you think that will be a major concern?
We have had winter temps keep reappearing - - but no snow. It is twenty-nine degrees outside right now. but will be sixty-nine by late afternoon. I wonder when your temps start increasing, will it be gradually or quickly throughout the day.

  3. Would you believe I am wearing boots I bought in 1980. I say if they work wear them. We shoveled snow again on Monday as well as Sunday. More of the white stuff expected tonight into Wednesday. I am so sick of winter. You should see the poor Robins going crazy trying to get out of the snow. Spring, PLEASE come soon.

  4. I know it was not Minnesota but "Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder came to mind when you talked about the endless snow.

  5. This is getting ridiculous. WHEN will spring come? We got more than a third of an inch rain yesterday and the temperature, the high for the day, was 46F. Sheesh!

  6. Endless winter indeed. It feels for us like January! Odd to see my daffies trying to poke up through the ice and snow. I imagine you have so much more snow, ours is just inches of snow and ice.
I am starting to dream of bugs and warm weather....

  7. I am still wearing my heaviest winter coat all day everyday when I take the dog outside. I know it may look stupid when cars drive by but they aren’t standing out there in this arctic wind. Someone posted in Iowa that this was like January 98th as we never left January. I am envision for you Minnesotans heat waves from the sun and water running everywhere into the lakes. All of it will come down the mighty Mississippi. Stay tough!

  8. Temperatures are in flux here: low 70s one day and low 40s the next. Definitely not time to put the boots and parkas away.

  10. Seems to be endless winter everywhere, in some form or another, cold, rain, snow. David just got another four inches of snow, but it looks like Spring is starting tomorrow for them, and maybe us too, and I hope for you as well!

  11. We were lucky this last snowstorm. A friend of mine in Maple Grove down in the cities got 22 inches of snow with that last one. Driving down to the cities for McFamily was a little dicey. It could be worse. ;) But--we are supposed to be in the 50s by Thursday! Melting time again. :)

  12. I think Spring has arrived here. The temperatures are warmer, and we're even getting some nice days where we can leave the windows open without hubby moaning it's too cold. Hope Spring arrives with you soon too.

  15. I like that you have new winter boots but refuse to wear them and sully them with old winter sludge!

  17. Everybody is getting antsy about spring. Spring will be short. Suddenly one day it will be summer...no spring!

  18. I guess it's safe to bet that the snow stick is not free of snow on this, my chosen day (my granddaughter's birthday), so I'll be passing the stick on the any guesser still left. It's looking like whoever guessed the latest day will be the winner. But that is hardly any comfort to you.

  21. I made the mistake of putting my winter coat away and it is a jinx because it went down to below freezing that night. So, beware!
