Sheeps

Sheeps always make me smile.

favorite things

Some of my favorite things that make me smile sit on the shelf above my computer.

A Equinox Farm Calendar showed up in the mail, many thanks to Sara for all the smiles…her sheeps are special!

I think I live vicariously through Sara and her photographs.  A long time ago raising sheep and goats was a possibility for me…we tried to buy my Grandparents Farm (my uncle wouldn’t sell it)  and then we put an offer on a farm near the ND and MN border along the Red River…it was in the flood plain and had a few other problems so we did not purchase it.  Eventually I took one of those fancy smancy tests that tell you what profession you are best suited for…Police Officer…Child Care…Horticulture. Sheep/Goat farmer was not on that list.  I figured at 45 I was too old to be a Cop and I just wanted to be a Grandmother not take care of kids everyday…so I chose Horticulture. Funny how things work out.

  2. My daughter-in-law used to raise goats. They were a real laugh with all their antics. I also took one of those tests and ended up in a career not even on their list. So much for tests.

  3. I like the idea of herding sheep, but I never thought about becoming one. You would have made a good one, though, in my humble opinion. :-)

  4. Just think of all the wool you could have spun into yarn. . .

  5. The horticulture seems to have stuck and become a life long activity. Good choice!

  6. I've never really considered myself a sheep farmer, but we have had sheep for about 36 years, and for a while did have enough that we were selling wool and meat. Ramona should last another few years and then that will be it for sheep I think. I've enjoyed it for the most part, maybe Larry not quite so much ;-)

  7. I love Sara's farm and visit her daily. I grew-up raising sheep, and we even had some here at the farm for a spell.

    Sheeps it is!

  8. I was raised on a farm with some sheep , horses I had my own horse , Cattle , ducks etc . My mum had a spinning wheel and we would spin their wool and use it for cloths and such . We had a hobby farm and lived off of our live stock and the land so I guess I did Horticulture to lol , flower gardens and a huge veggie patch back in the late 60s,70s, and early 80s . I loved the farm and miss it very much , these days farming is a lot harder to do then it was back in the day . We have farms around us in our valley and area so I can enjoy both farm animals ,wildlife and nature all in the same place and I love it . Horticulture is a good choice ! Thanks for sharing , Have a good day !

  10. The career choice tests told me Artist or English ( teacher? writer? librarian, whatever? Don't remember. Don't think there was such a thing as environmental educator in those days. I wonder what those old tests predicted for those who ended up in the computer field before they retired.

  11. I grew up in Wales with sheep in a lot of the nearby fields. I've even bottle fed sheep... And goats too, come to think of it, but sheep more.

  13. My school tried to encourage me to be a nurse. I am certain there are many people ideally suited to nursing but definitely not me. Somehow I have ended up paying bills all day and training up new members of staff. Trouble is the young things won’t stay long enough to learn the job properly so I never stop. The manager's assistant only arrived in October and now she has found her dream job somewhere else. We have posted job ads this week....

  14. Sheep do have the sweetest smiles! I took one of those tests in high school. I forget now what my choice occupation was supposed to be, but all I wanted to be was married and living in a nice little house (with the white picket fence). I did teach for a few years, but that was it for outside work.

  15. When we took a test in high school I can't even remember now what the other occupations were suggested for me but I do remember "forest ranger"!!! I think your love of plants has served you well. :)

  16. As a kid on our little farm in Oregon we would get bummer lambs from other farmers and bottle feed them until they were weaned. It was fun to feed them until they got too big and rough. They were like pets, but we never named them, because eventually we ate them.

  17. I like your memory display. The younger photo of the grands is so neat to see. Those boys sure did outgrow their older cousin girls. I seemed to end up with a collection of flower frogs to support the flowers in vases. I have one like that on in you photo but I sure don’t know where it is right now.

  18. If you love sheep, you'd appreciate driving by my neighbor's house every day. We live in one of those "country gentleman" kinds of neighborhoods--you know, the kind for people who like to pretend that they live out in the country, but would never last if they actually had to, you know, do the work of running an agricultural business--and our lots are just big enough for zoning to permit limited livestock (mostly just horses or chickens). Well, my neighbor decided to do a few sheep and goats. The goat side of the operation didn't last too long...stripped the bark off the fruit trees...but the sheep have been a success.

A few weeks back, driving into town, I passed his field and noticed a baby lambie. A few days later, there was another one. They are so cute to watch that it's a good thing we live on a quiet street. We'll often just stop the car in the middle of the road and watch the critters frolic. So cute.

  19. I took one of those tests too and it came up military, medicine or computer science....since I still had 4 kids I was raising, I chose computer science...lol! I might have been too old for the military anyway. Love the sheep picture! Like you, if I was younger, I would be a sheep farmer and then I would learn to spin and make my own yarn....you get the picture. But I probably wouldn't have any time to knit! LOL!
