Chance: A Walk

Hiya!  It is me Chance the most handsome Border Collie in all of Minnesota.

Tuesday morning

The mail goes everyday.  They told me it is not there on Sunday but a little creative whinning and a bark here or there convinces them that a walk to the mailbox is well worth it EVERY day of the week.  We walk way beyond the mail box now. (They are making progress!)

Most of the time Far Side goes along. Far Guy and I are allowed to go by ourselves…but mostly she goes along to supervise.  She has Yak Tracks now…courtesy of her baby brother who wants to keep her butt off the ice and out of the snowbanks.

She makes funny tracks now.

Wednesday morning over on the snowmobile trail.  The snow is getting a crust on it so I can walk where ever I want.

Most of the time I wear my red harness,  but I have been known to run up the stairs without it on.  I do not come downstairs without it on and someone guiding me down the stairs…again…I whine if I want to come down when they leave me on the landing all alone and lonely.

The warm weather has brought the skunks out and Far Side is certain that they can walk on top of the snow too…so she is extra careful at night…she goes out first and barks to scare everything away before I am allowed outside.  She doesn’t care if that is weird.

I am feeling pretty good for an old guy and as long as I am not allowed to scarf up bird seed outside or anything but “Far Side approved” food I don’t vomit or have diarrhea.  Yeah me! I suppose I could fill you in on my anal fistula/tumor too…but maybe that is TMI.  Leave it to be said that Far Side keeps my nether regions impeccabbly clean. She must love me alot!

  1. I was wondering if you were awake, too. Guess you are. Something peaceful about the still of the night. Good day for a message from Chance. He sounds happy. Happy is important.

  3. It's time for St. Uhro again? It seems like it was just yesterday! LOL! chance you are doing great! And the folks too! Mom wants to get me that harness thing BEFORE I really need it which is getting close. I try to go out and few times as necessary and then stay out all day when it's nice...like now! You have great parents there and the skunks were always the first sign of Spring in my book. Pretty soon you too will be laying out on the grass in the sun!

  4. Hi Chance, you sound happy that you are getting out for walks. For an "old guy" you seem pretty spry to me. You know someone loves you when they take very good care of you and we all know that Far side takes VERY good care of you. Nice to hear from you again.

  5. It's always good to see that you are blogging again, Chance. I have some of those Yak Trax too, and they sure do help walk on the ice. It amazes me that it is St. Urho Day again already. I read the Finland is the happiest place in the world! Must be because of that saint. Or maybe he just helps a little. :-)

  6. Brrr! I suppose you are all used to that cold, but it sent a chill through me just thinking about walking outside on the snow. It sure is pretty though!

  7. Oh Chance of course you are loved much! Tess and Tay send woofs to you!
Good to hear Far Guy is much improved. I guess I didn't win the snow stick contest, I was being pretty optimistic when I said March 15!

  8. The skunks are roaming around here, too. I can smell them some mornings.

Love Far Sides's Yak Tracks: they look like something I need to purchase.

  9. I regret your buddy Barney just isn’t doing as well as you. His ability to walk is pretty much slowed to walking six or eight steps and then rest. He has a fat tumor on his right shoulder and I think that is bothering him and maybe even his breathing. His heart is in to the getting outside as it makes him wag his tail but it is always a very assisted process. Chance, you look like you have a lot of energy to be able to walk that far away from the house. We are going to get winter again for the next two days.

  10. Oh Chance you are a handsome clever boy ! Our Misty has to have a harness for now to go up the stairs but that's just at night to go up to bed and until her leg has fully strengthened up form her surgery in December which it is as we go farther on our walks each day to . Glad Far Side has got footwear to stop her from slipping and falling . Yes skunks are about a bit more here to now but the sound of some one coming out scares them off usually lol ! Glad to hear Far Guy is doing much better . Thanks for sharing , have a good weekend !

  12. Oh Chance, a post from you always cheers me up and makes my day brighter. That's so nice of Far Side to go out and bark to scare away the skunks. Eli is always barking at buggers in the dark that we can't see. Maybe I should try barking too. You are a sweetie pie. You take care.

  13. The idea of Far Side scaring away potential skunks by 'barking' makes me chuckle. Thanks for the laugh, Chance.

  16. I did get a funny little mind movie of Far Side out at night barking the skunks away.
Thanks for the update. I'm glad everyone of doing well again.

  17. Your post made me chuckle, Chance! Glad things are going relatively well for you. The image of Far Side barking at the skunks, well that's one for the books, haha! Larry was pruning that apple tree and said the he was smelling something skunky, and it wasn't skunks. We went for a walk and I think it was just all the fires burning, every one is trying to get rid of all the ice storm damaged branches.

  19. Hi Chance,

Sounds like you've been having some great walks, and that you have some wonderful - and well trained - humans. You can never have too many walks!

    Lots of licks,
    Lilie
