Unplanned Spring Cleaning

Late Sunday afternoon I was awakened by a commotion in the bathroom.  Far Guy was cussing the old plunger that we got back in the 1980’s.  I know it is not from the 1970’s as that one had a burned handle from the time it was used to roll a log in the wood furnace.  He went to the garage for bigger more impressive clog removing tools, snakes and a power driven whatchamacallit.

I had been very sound asleep…so I had a bit of a brain fog…but assisted him anyway…even calling for a new plunger which was swiftly delivered by my great niece and nephew, Anna and Mason next door.

That plunger had no results either…something was really amuck.  Finally the water alarm went off in the furnace/laundry room as water came backwards through the floor drain.  The kids left with their plunger and reported back to their Dad ( My Nephew) that we had real problems.  I called my other baby brother and as I was telling Far Guy how to by pass the float…Far Guy was recalling it himself…the lift station lifted…and the water receded down the floor drain.   The float was bad…I disinfected the floor once before supper and once after supper.

Monday morning my nephew Josh came over, then my other baby brother came over…they developed a plan and at the end of the day we had a working lift station again…complete with a new float.

In order to have an area to work in the washer/dryer had to be moved, and in order to move it we removed the wire shelving unit from the wall…the kitchen was full of stuff.  Piece by piece I washed all the shelving whilst the guys were “fixing.” When they were done, I scrubbed the floor again…and we put the shelves together and all “the stuff” was put back in place.

On the positive side:

Part of that room has been spring cleaned!

The lift station is only for the lower level of our home.  The upstairs bathroom has it’s own separate sewage line…so we were never without a bathroom or a shower.

After a full day I had a four hour nap, I am a good napper… stress makes me really sleepy.

  1. What a mess to wake up to on a Monday morning! The burnt handle on the old plunger is so funny! Good grief! It is always something! For me this morning, it was a hair ball on the living room floor.

  2. We had a flood this weekend, too, but at least it was clean water from the washing machine. I don't envy you that mess to clean up, spring cleaning or not!

  3. What a way to wake up (and I'm not a morning person). My whole day would have been shot by that episode. So glad everything is up and running (haha). Love your look on the positive side of things - Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.

  4. Yikes! Not exactly the best way to start the week, but on the plus side you've got a jump on spring cleaning. I cannot nap so I would have been ready for bed before suppertime! :-)

  5. I hate it when a toilet backs up. We had trouble with our septic tank last year, had to have the filter cleaned out.

  8. You were very fortunate to have such knowledgeable helpers. Something of which we have little.

I would say a real deserved nap.

  11. What a crappy situation! My sewer backed up once. It took two months before everything was back to normal...new carpet, insurance...

  13. Gotta love that motivational type spring cleaning...mine usually gets done with a mad on (which makes me real efficient) when that happens. Our hot water tank needs replaced and the laundry room needs a good cleaning but I'm waiting on the former to get it all in motion.

  15. okay, I'm all caught up with you again. Tell Chance the girls are mad at me for missing his post. I'm so sorry about your cousin. They do know how to clear roads up there ..it's worse here because they have no equipment. Your carvings are unbelievable. I could not do that to save my soul. I love the snowman and of course, the loon. Thank you for the Find A Grave link. I need to look in to that. So glad you got answers to your questions about Far Guy's port problem. Sorry you had plumbing problems but so glad you had people you could call. It's been cold here too. I finally got new tires on my car in between ice and rain storms. We're doing well and Miss Peeps is, well...Miss Peeps! LOL! TTYL!

  18. Having grown up in the big city and always calling the local plumber here in the middle of nowhere for "emergencies" I believe I have a better understanding of nuclear physics than the mechanics of plumbing and septic systems....;)

  19. Well, Red had the right word to describe the whole episode.... crappy! Sorry you had to do this impromptu Spring cleaning though.

  20. Oh, my! Aren't you grateful for family nearby?! What an enormous mess and amount of work to drop into your lap...and right in the middle of a nap!...it must be a true gift to look on the positive side like you did after all that :(

  21. We take modern plumbing for granted until it doesn't do what it's supposed to do. No one wants to deal personally with what we flush.

  22. Bummer - hope everything is back to normal now.

  23. Ugh. That sounds like one nasty mess!
