Sunday

I made a nice Sunday supper...mashed potatoes and a hamburger gravy along with green beans and for fruit cherries. I was tired out cooking for two! My Maternal Grandmother cooked for about 50 people every Sunday afternoon.  I am not sure how she did it.  She put on quite a spread.  Chicken was often on the menu.

This is a very old photo of someone feeding chickens. My mother thought it was Lela ( only sister of my maternal grandfather Albert). At any rate the photo was taken at my Great Grandparent Drewes home place.

We were expected to be at our Grandparents home every Sunday and every holiday...like Church you didn't get excused unless you were vomiting or had diarrhea.

It was another smoky day and we stayed indoors.  Far Guy felt rotten all day and had a number of naps.

  1. Hubby felt the smokey air even with an air cleaner running and the A/C. Both of us are stuffed up and ... well...ick.
It got better later in the day with some breezes.
Sorry FG wasn't feeling good, that was happening here too.
    We had omelets for supper.

  2. Our ancestors worked so hard to build a foundation for our lives. Many came from other countries and did not even speak English. This is why I can’t condemn those who are coming today. I think we need a path so they can come~~ the farm workers I mean.

I cook and then the food is nasty. It’s so disappointing. lol

  4. I'm sorry your husband is feeling so awful. We're getting smoky haze here in NY state today too. Those Sunday dinners: With 16 kids, only two left at home, 12 of them married, so it's a crowd of a family! There are 16 grandchildren now, with three more on the way, and most of them come here on Sunday afternoons! Yesterday I baked about 50 pieces of chicken, which my son-in-law grilled...but daughters brought over fruit, Mac and cheese, and pasta salad, some desserts too. It's crazy but fun, the best day of the week, but when everyone leaves and it's quiet again, ahhh. :).

  8. It was the same here in Montreal...the wildfires 🔥 affect the air quality.

  9. I'm so sorry that FG had a rotten day. I'm sure he's counting the days until this treatment is done. Those frequent family dinners were sure important. My in-laws were still doing big, loud family gatherings when our kids were growing up. Now that my MIL's generation is all gone that just doesn't happen very often anymore and I really miss those times. But our families are so scattered these days.

  12. It's so great to see families that gather frequently. God bless your grandmother for all of the work she did in preparation! So many of our families are scattered and don't have that opportunity.

  13. We had a similar tradition, however it was the other way 'round. My grandparents, when they were in town would come for dinner every Sunday. Mom would put a roast in the oven, usually beef, and make a huge pot of potatoes and veg. It wasn't unusual for other people to show up, my uncle, aunt and their large family, and sometimes some of the neighbours. Mom always seemed to be able to stretch that roast to feed everyone.
I have a hard time cooking for a half dozen, 50 would be a herculean task!

  16. Hopefully tomorrow will be an easier day for Far Guy.
I have some of those old photos too, the ones where you're just not sure who the people are.

  17. That smokey air has to be hard on FarGuy on top of the rest. I hope he feels better soon.
Can't imagine feeding that many people every week! You come from a huge family. That is so nice! :)

  18. We would always go to our gramma's house after church every Sunday. We were a small family, my mom one of two daughters and the only one in the state. So it was gramma, my mom and dad, me and my two brothers. What I remember is the warm German potato salad which is funny because it was my mom's mom and my dad's side is the German side.
