The Owls have it

The May basket this year is an owl.  I am undecided if I want to put a handle on the baskets...most likely...anyways the playing with the paper and glue is now done.   They await handles and candy.   This year I made 24 May Baskets.

They are all different..cause I am easily bored.  You have plenty of time to find a simple design and make a May Basket for a friend or a neighbor!  I missed doing May Baskets last year due to Covid...

There is a new Mosaic CAL (Crochet Along) starting in May.  It is a beautiful patchwork afghan.   I bought the pattern and proceeded to order the yarn...oh all those colors to choose from...I didn't want it too dark...because darker colors are harder on old eyes.  I was supposed to order three colors and 23 skeins then I added another color that Far Guy liked so 26 skeins should show up later this week and I can do a practice square.  This gal has a really good way of taking care of all the ends with the color changes so you have minimal ends...we will see.   It took me over an hour to decide on my colors.

In the meantime I am working on a baby blanket. With our weather taking a nose dive I should be able to finish it this week.

I brought in the solar bird bath fountain and all of the glass rain gauges so they won't freeze and break.

  1. Oh OWLS! I love owls. So sorry we do not know the concept of May baskets in Denmark where I live.

    1. On May Day the baskets filled with candy or flowers are delivered and hung on the front door, you knock on the door and then run away...if they catch you then they will kiss you! It is a rite of Spring to share a basket with neighbor kids and friends:)

  2. You are so creative! My mom loved to make things with owls on them. Last time I was at the lake I noticed all the owls again. I'm looking forward to seeing your colors of yarn!

  4. Your May baskets are a hoooot!!! They are so stinking cute! It must be hard to hang baskets on doors anonymously in this day and age, with Ring etc - and then there are the long rural driveways. Looking forward to reading about how the owls leave your nest and spread cheer! More yarn, more fun!!

  5. Those are so neat. You are quite talented in so many things.
We will stay just above freezing at night but the recent rain changed everything! I'm going to have to mow a spot in front of the house just for Charlie!

  6. I love the variation in the owl May Day baskets. I don't like doing exactly the same thing over and over either. We had a three day rainy spell but now we are supposed to have a couple clear days.

  8. Sad you are getting below freezing. If our weather stations are correct, we shouldn't get much lower than the 40's. I hope they are telling me the truth! Decades ago I worked as a library assistant and took over storytime when we were between children's librarians. For our late April craft we made May Baskets (of course). Most or all of the mothers had never heard of them. Poor deprived parents.

  9. I love the May baskets. How fun is that? I didn't know anyone still kept this tradition alive. The blanket sounds so colorful and it will be fun to see it.
    Blessings,

  10. We are still getting frosty nights here, so I have to bring in the gladiolus that I planted in starter pots, as they were starting to sprout. We have a week of sunshine in the forecast though! May is not too far away!
I remember making May baskets as a child, we would fill them with candy and hang them in a tree and each child could pick a basket but not their own. Did I mention I am from a large family? We had a book called Things To Make and Do which I am sure my mother really really liked as it kept us occupied!

  11. We are having freezing weather here, also. The only good in it is the spring bulbs are beautiful. I love your owls. You are ever so talented.

  12. Oh my - what adorable May baskets!! That really was a sweet tradition from my childhood, and your post makes me wish I had continued it. Maybe I'll have to make a couple for friends!

  13. I love the owl baskets, but I am one of the poor deprived parents mentioned by the previous commenter who never heard of May baskets before. I guess this isn't a tradition in my part of the world.

We had an inch of snow overnight, and it looks like we'll get a bit more over the next two days. I'd rather have rain but I'll take the moisture.

Take care, have fun with your new project!

Can hardly wait to see this huge crochet project in progress--from skeins to practice squares to finish.
Snow is supposed to be on the way today. From 70s to snow. What a spring--LOL! ;)

  19. I love your owl baskets. You inspired me a few years back to make baskets. I'll try it again this year, since we all can use something to make us smile. I look forward to your new crochet project. :-)

  22. May baskets are not known in Canada either to the best of my knowledge. If we did hang one on someone's door and ran away we might have a very confused neighbour. I only know about them from reading English books.

  23. Well, I guess I wish I was on your May basket list. That is a custom that has been lost here, I'm afraid. Primary grade teachers used to do them, but now there is no time for art. Sad.
Have fun being the May basket queen!
