Oh Deer!

We were watching The Stanley Cup Game at my baby brothers home when I noticed a deer and fawn in the yard.

The mama was very attentive to her baby.  He/she nursed and finally walked around.
He /she is not very old...less than a week old.

Eventually mama walked off into the woods and the spotted fawn wasn't far behind.

  1. Neat, I've been seeing them crossing the gravel road in front of me often...coming out of hay fields!

  2. Deer are so amazing to watch, we have plenty around here and see them often this time of year, they like our orchard which doesn't make me a happy camper.
    Have a blest day.

  3. :) I saw twins last night enjoying the warmth of the sun (in a ditch) - I hope they stay safe.

  4. Deer can be so beautiful and so graceful. However, we had one memorable summer when they destroyed 3 cars - my favorite was my son who saw a group crossing the road and stopped. One ran into the front quarter of his car, one ran straight into the passenger door and one ran into the rear quarter panel.

A few weeks later he was driving down a highway in his new car at 55 mph, a deer crossed the median, bounced off his hood and went through the windshield into the driver's seat where the deer proceeded to shred the seats and bleed everywhere before expiring. Unbelievably, my son had the presence of mind to throw the car in park and jump out to avoid the deer. There was a state trooper sitting in the median who saw the whole thing. He was quite impressed.

A few weeks later his younger brother was following a friend down a country road, both in separate pick up trucks. A group of deer ran out in front of his friend who slammed on his brakes, my son hit is friend and somehow more deer came out of the woods and hit his truck.

We are not very fond of deer. Actually we think we may be deer magnets.

    1. Wow! I saw someone hit a deer on the freeway a couple years ago, the car was right in front of me and didn't see the deer running across. I saw the deer and slowed down, thought she was going to miss the car, but no...it was pretty awful. I stopped to stay with the man who was in shock until police came.

  5. We had a doe in the yard at the cabin we rented last week. She hung out and nibbled grass for quite a few minutes. Our yard here at home has a path worn where the deer walk through a couple of times a day. We've watched lots of fawns over the years but I haven't seen any so far this spring.

  6. I see deer west of us crossing the road to get to the lake for water. I have never seen deer inside this town. Some neighboring towns like West Des Moines has herds of them traveling through their back yards. The wildest thing we have is the mean chipmunk and a couple of rabbits. I think the neighbor has shot all the squirrels. That scene of mom and fawn is pure Minnesota in reality. I like it.

  8. Your deer and her fawn are so beautiful and peaceful looking, however our experience of deer is more like Miss Merry's comment above. Cars are destroyed on a regular basis around here by deer and I always see at least one lying on the roadside in my drives to and from the lake. So sad as they are gorgeous creatures.

  9. I love seeing the deer. I don't like them in my yard but anyplace else on the farm works for me. You got some really neat photos!

  10. I love to watch the deer this time of year. Once in a while we will have a doe "shelter" her fawn in the thicket near our creek. What a special treat. I admit we don't care much for the large numbers of them who come by to nibble on our shrubbery.

  11. I haven't seen any this year but our neighbor that fed them finally moved away so that's probably why. I don't believe in feeding the deer unless it's winter and they can't find food. But here there is the lake for water and all kinds of berries and food in the woods all year long with no snow cover. What a precious mama and baby!

  12. So cute! Such a treat to see fawns. Our yard is fenced now so we don’t see them here but when i ride my bike in the evening i often see them down by the water. They are smaller here than the Minnesota ones, though.

  14. It is amazing how small they are when they are born and how quickly they grow.
