When I was growing up it was called Decoration Day. Now a days it is called Memorial Day. Times change but we should not.
Sometime during the day could you stop and remember the soldiers? They are not just a name on a tombstone. They were sons, brothers, husbands and fathers.
They fought for you and for me and their graves should be decorated.
Hi, I love your header photo collage. My maternal grandpa was killed in action during WWII. Your post is a reminder to pause and give thanks for those who gave their lives for our Country. Hope Mikey and Maddie are doing well. xo
ReplyDeleteYears ago, when I was growing up, there was always a parade that included Veterans, and speeches. Graves were visited and decorated. My father was a Veteran of WWI - so we were very observant of Memorial Day. He died when I was about 10 - so he was not there. He was 42 when he died of stomach cancer and we always thought that being gassed in France during WWI had something to do with his ill health. My mother was very active in the women's auxiliary of VFW - Veterans of Foreign Wars.

It was always Decoration Day as I grew up, too. We went to the cemetery with flowers and paused to remember as we placed them on every family grave.
ReplyDeleteI decorated two graves. Beautiful header photos.
ReplyDeleteI read decoration day was set in May since that is when there are a lot of flowers to be had. I posted too, finally.
ReplyDeleteI remember when it was called Decoration Day. Different name, same sentiment: remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. I also love your header and send my best wishes to your dear great grand and Maddie. :-)
ReplyDeleteHubby and I put flags out at my Dad's grave this weekend. Happy Memorial Day!
ReplyDeleteSadly, too many people think today is a all about BBQs and camping. I'm proud my community makes sure veteran's graves are decorated with a flag. When I was young, everyone wore crepe paper poppies. I haven't seen one in years.
ReplyDeleteWe did to when I was a child, guess that is why I like going there.
ReplyDeleteI so agree! Well done!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's interesting how the day has changed but the key point is still there about remembering the forces people
ReplyDeleteThe day has created so many family traditions each a little different. I spent my childhood going to Macksburg, Iowa every year seeing relatives that I didn't know very well and going to the Moon Cemetery afterwards. My brother from Arizona has taken care of the decorating this year as he is back in Iowa right now. We didn't have time to travel this year.
ReplyDeleteI love your header, and I love what you said. I hope everyone did stop and remember the soldiers. The day was for more than cookouts and partying.
ReplyDeleteI too love your banner at the top and I had forgotten it used to be Decoration Day. Now, it's barbecues and beer. The older ones (like you and me and older) still go to the graves and 'decorate them'. We need to remember what this day is about and be so grateful that we are here because of their sacrifices. Beautiful pictures.
