My vehicle smelled…really bad…gag a maggot bad. Every once in a while I rolled down the window to escape the smell. We looked all over inside the vehicle, in the trunk under the seats…in Chances blanket that covers the backseat. We were stuck with that foul smell. Good thing it is our Sunday car…but maybe we should use it a tad more to discourage inhabitation by small creatures…it smelled like a dead decaying mouse.
I mentioned it to our daughter Jen…she said check the cabin air filter! Great idea…where is that exactly? Far Guy Googled it…viola…it is under the glove compartment. Everything had to be taken out of the glove box…and then the glove box itself and then some clips…what should Far Guy find…but a mouse nest complete with a little family…all deceased. Tragic. (Insert a mouse funeral march here.)
Went to town and got a new filter…there was no washing that one out. A 50$ filter was on sale for 27$ …a freaking filter…a papery thing…
Oh well learn something new every day. The other day I learned that there is a spray called poo pourri…you spray it in the water before you poop….yes everyone poops. Has anyone out there tried it yet?
At least you got the bad smell sorted out. Poo Pouri? Haven't tried that yet. Greetings to you!
ReplyDeleteOh that is so sad and smelly. You think your filters are expensive a tractor one cost $100 and up. Never tried Poo poruri but hope it helps. Hug B
ReplyDeleteNothing worse than a dead mouse smell. Living out in the country, we get mice in the house in the winter and I put poison down in the basement and next thing you know the house will stink for a few days. Better than mice running around in my cupboards! They can pretty much destroy anything when they go to putting nests in things.
ReplyDeleteAt least you got the mouse family out of your car. Nothing worse than dead animal smell. I had a mouse family nesting in an old computer once. Turned it on an the computer blew a fuse. Nothing better than fried mouse. It is a real shame how a person gets ripped off when purchasing something for their car. There is no reason for a filter to cost that much money. As for Poo Pouri I've never heard of it.
ReplyDeleteI saw the Poo Pouri advertised but I don't know anybody who has actually used it. In Colorado once a long time ago something chewed the wiring under the hood of our car and pretty much made a mess of it. Mice? Or (shiver) rats? :-)
ReplyDeleteWe had a mouse build a nest in the air conditioner of our car, that cost nearly $100 to fix. How to prevent, drive the car more often.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear someone else say "gag a maggot". People look at me like I am crazy when I use that expression.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct - - that is a wretched smell. The only thing that comes close to it is a rotten potato.
Glad you are smelling fresh as a daisy again!
I had never heard of the cabin air filter in a car! I don't like being infested by mice, but can't help feeing sad for those poor little baby mice and mama!
ReplyDeleteShirley H.
My sister-in-law introduced me to Poo Pourri and I love it. Works great. I have seen it at Bed, Bath and Beyond in Fargo.
ReplyDelete"Cabin air filter?" That's a term I've never heard, until now. Good thing Jen knew about it!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah those filters are expensive! Too bad for the mouse family but you did make me laugh out loud on that point! You "can" pop that filter out and clean it as well....when no mouse family has taken up residence that is.
ReplyDeleteYikes! That reminds me of when I drove around for an tire week with a terrible smell in my car. I searched it high and low. And then finally, I remembered I hadn't checked in the hatchback area. There was a dead bat. Poor little fella must have flown in sometime when I was driving at night.
ReplyDeleteI have heard of poo potpourri but isn't that like putting perfume on a pig? It's like when people douse themselves in cologne or perfume when they haven't showered. They aren't fooling anyone and they are just fogging the area with their perfume/BO stink. ;)
One time my husband went grocery shopping, and one of the bags spilled. Several days later, the car reeked. After searching everywhere, my husband moved the seat back. There it was -- a package of ground meat rotting away. Yuck!
ReplyDeleteYes, Poo Pourri is a real thing - a small spray bottle. A friend gave me a bottle as a gift: what kind of message does that send?
ReplyDeleteWe had that horrid thing happen to us...it was terrible. She had built a nest in the filter just like yours did. AND its a HUGE job to get to the filter...I know exactly what you and Far Guy went through to get rid of the mouse remains.

Had the same thing happen to me back a few years ago in Mississippi. Awful smell!
ReplyDeletePoo Pourri makes it smell like you pooped in Hawaii.
ReplyDeleteOh my! Same thing happened to Poppy a few weeks ago. He has not figured out how to get in to that filter. He rode with the windows down for several days. And the Poo Pourri, my daughter Lynn has a little bottle of the stuff.
ReplyDeleteYour story reminds me of an episode of "Car Talk" where a mouse got into some poor person's car and stored a bunch of Hershey kisses in their heater vents! And, yes I've heard of "Poo Pourri." Have you seen the commercials on the Internet? They're hilarious!
ReplyDeleteYuk! A similar smell involved a camping trip through the bad lands of Canadian Sask. where we encountered a biblical plague of locusts. It was 100plus and no air conditioner. Hundred of roasted hoppers filled every nook and cranny including inside all the door panels. We smell it all the way home...
ReplyDeleteI thought "gag a maggot off a gut wagon" was exclusively mine!
ReplyDeleteMice do smell very foul. Glad you found them.
The mouse habitation is fairly common. sometimes cars aren't used very often and they build a nest on top of the motor. The older cars were not mouse tight so mice regularly set up house. Too bad it happens because it's a mess.

ReplyDelete"Cabin air filter" is a new one to me too. We had some kind of rodent chew wires in our rental car when we were in Austria. The rental car company helped us get it fixed, they said it was a common problem.
We are having trouble with a smart mouse ... trips the trap, eats the bait and leaves... ggrrrrr... alternative brand of water spray works nicely also...
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with your husband's assessment of the poo pourri. I've been laughing so hard I'm almost crying.
ReplyDeleteWhen my sister told me about Poo Pourri I didn't believe her. I was sure she was making it up. Then I watched the commercial and found it really existed. Seriously though, if it works it would be handy to have in your purse. Well, not necessarily YOUR purse. I mean anyone's purse.
ReplyDeleteFirst I've heard of Poo Pourri. I went to their website, the names are pretty funny! I guess it will help a bit, but then that's what fans and open windows are for:)
ReplyDeleteWho knew!! And I laughed out loud when I got to Poo And it's 6 o'clock in the morning, pre coffee. :-)
ReplyDeleteI never knew about that secret spot, either!
ReplyDeleteMy condolences to the mouse family.
I haven't tried the poo pourri but I have seen the commercial a few times and it is soooo funny! I wonder if it works? Handy thing to keep in your purse if it does--LOL!
That is the filter my oil changing place takes out from under the hood. I let them replace it once for big bucks and never again. I hate the smell of a dead mouse.
ReplyDeleteThat's what was making the sound in my ac/heat whenever I turned it on! Except I was lucky it was just the nest....they had vacated the property. It cost me $50.00 to have it all taken apart, nest removed and new filter. Bobby and Jimmy are very good and very reasonable here in town. I should have googled it...duh! I google everything else. I have not tried the spray yet but since I live alone who cares? LOL!
