Wistful Wednesday: Little Ones 1972 and 1984

“Babies are a handful sometimes, a heartful all the time.”  Author Unknown

Babies.  My Grandma liked babies..she always had time to ohh and ahh..and give advice.  This is a four generation photo taken in 1972.

1972 Four generations Elsie Madeline Trica Connie

Grandma D. my Mother holding Trica and me.

This was taken in April of 1972.  AND oh yes I look tired.  Trica did not sleep for more than two hours at a time until she was six months old. She screamed night and day..she had colic.  She would scream while I fed her a bottle..she would suck and then scream.  My Grandmother left and went home one day..she said I was going to choke that baby for sure feeding her while she was screaming. My pediatrician told me to keep right on feeding her even if she was screaming.  Who knows best your Grandma or your Pediatrician?  He spent his lunch hour with us one day..watching how she had to be fed..and declared it okay.

Fast forward 12 years to 1984.  My baby brother and his wife had a beautiful baby girl.

Elsie Drewes and Ellen Christine Yliniemi August 1984

Grandma got to hold her close when they visited that summer.  The little girl is all grown  up and married now. I wonder if my Grandmother gave my brother any baby advice?

This was a photo I found last winter when I scanned a whole bunch of old photos that were special to my Grandmother.

In the 12 years between 1972 and 1984 my Grandmother never changed the color of her kitchen..it may have just been a slightly different shade of aqua. Her little window to the porch just had a little bit different white curtain with aqua flowers.

Some things never change..flowery curtains or a favorite color ( My Mother painted her Dining Room and Living room this same color aqua last year.) Another thing that never changes is the love a Great Grandma or a Grandmother has for a new baby:)

  1. Beautiful memories sweetie. I'd put my money down on the Pediatrician! Even though the medical staff told me our daughters chances would be better though all her heart surgeries, my MIL blamed all the baby's troubles on my breast feedin'. Go figure!!!

I loved seein' your female generational pic there and walkin' down memory lane with you and your grandma.

Have a wonderfully blessed day my friend!!! :o)

  2. That's a great photo to have of four generations. I also noticed that the outfit you were wearing didn't exactly let you blend into the background! :-)

  3. And are you planning on painting your kitchen aqua like the generations before you. All kidding aside, one can see the love in grandma's eyes holding your baby brother's child. It says it all

  4. You are so lucky to have these wonderful pictures and memories. I love that you had four generations. My brother has a picture of four generations of the men in our family - it's pretty special!

  5. I love these pictures. We have never had a four generation photo. My great grandmother died from "Milk leg" in her late 30's. My other great grandma I have no idea. One of those things I need to ask my Mom. Not as memorable as Milk Leg I would think. My Dad's side of the family? Grandma Henry died when my Dad was very young, his other Grandma? Have no idea. His grandpa fell off a roof and they had to break his back to get him the coffin - another gruesome tale that has been passed down. Lot's of three generations. Loved your grandma. She looks kind and also like she can really cook!

  6. Ain't that the truth. Even my mom, who was so disappointed every time I got pregnant, once the babies arrived, she had to hold them, and give tons of advice Stern advice. You do know to make them sleep at night they need cereal (oatmeal) and a warm bath. (and I wonder why I can't go to sleep without eating or that I need a nap after lunch!)

I must admit I don't have a ton of pictures every where of my three grandchildren, didn't with my own girls but boy howdy, when they come here to the farm or I go in to see them I can't get enough of them. Ruby, I could kiss that baby to death, when her parents let me. I'm looking forward to the next one in October and more (hopefully but most likely) in the future.

I love your four generational picture. My mom passed before she had any great grandchildren - even from me, But I wonder if Ruby will have a picture of four generations of women.

  7. My mom got to be grandma and great grandma to a lot her grandkids. She had a lot of advice about the raising of them. Good and bad advice I might had. Those are neat photos. I have photos of my mom holding all the babies and being so happy to do so.

  8. Awwww you do look tired, but think what wonderful children you raised. Grandma's are pretty wonderful people, and it's lovely that she could be there to give advice.

I was blessed to meet my Great Grandma a few times, and there was a 5 generational picture of a cousin, and her family. Ours would only be 4 generations, and no one thought to get one of us...photos must have been really expensive back then, lol.

  10. I love the way your grandma is hugging that baby. It reminds me of my grandmother and my mother. I love babies, too, but I don't think I hold and hug them just that way. Nice photos.

  11. We live in parallel universes, I swear! My first child had colic too and I didn't even have a rocker. I would walk around the apartment with him and sort of rock or bounce and keep him against me as the warmth seems to calm them but of course the minute I would lay him down he would start screaming again...poor babies. But we all lived through it. I love babies too! I can't get enough of them and I rarely see any around here.
That is so wonderful to have your relatives close by and grow up with you Grandma and Mother near you. I love the photo of 4 generations! That's wonderful!

  15. Love those generational photos. Looking back, sometimes you wonder how you did it, right? But we were young and somehow lived through it--LOL! I can't imagine holding a grandchild. I think my heart would explode. ;)
