Little Golden Book

Do you remember The Little Golden Books?  Did you or your children have a favorite?

We had one special one that we could recite over and over.

I found it for sale.

In 1973 it was 69 cents and it along with a few other story books were gifts for our oldest daughter's 1st Birthday. (Gifts from Snuffer...our much loved dog)

Far Guy and I read that book over and over on our trip home on leave from Lowry AFB and then again on the long trip to Mac Dill AFB in the Summer of 1973.

As Trica got older and was able to turn the pages she would turn them as you recited the book and would make you go back and say it right if you messed up.

Anyways...I have a copy of the book...in todays prices the book would be valued at $5.50  well it is kinda rare...so I payed a tad bit more than that for it.

  2. LOVED those books. I still have one that is older (1979) that I cannot part with because it is my favorite.
The Boy With a Drum starts, "There once was a boy with a little toy drum - - Rat-a-tat-tat-a-tat Rum-a-tum-tum. One day he went marching And played on his drum - Rat-a-tat-tat-a-tat Rum-a-tum-tum."
    - - The summary is that he was joined by various animals on his march until they had a LONG line of them. Such a fun book because of the words being almost musical as you say them. Of course, we had to pretend we were playing a drum or use the Fisher Price drum.
THANKS for the Golden Book Memory - - takes me back to reading them to our girls, too.

  3. I loved the Golden books and the Dick and Jane ones too. The illustrations are calming and the new book pictures are stimulating. Everything for children today encourages movement. Children are innately active and reading time is a time of focus. We make learning to read harder for them.

  6. Our family's book was "The Best Nest". Mandy made sure to buy that book the day she found out she was pregnant with Piper. Two copies. One for their house and one for ours because Grandpa and Grandma Queen read it to her constantly. Then when Jamie & Alex's family's first child was expected, she bought them copies. They knew every. single. word. And don't ever try to skip a page. They would know. Thanks for the memories.
By the way, Dennis was at Lowry in 1974.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  8. I loved Golden Books and we had many as children. Sadly, I don’t know what my mother did with them. Was the story of Pippi Longstocking a Golden Book? It was one of my favorites as a child. My mother also had us signed up many years for a subscription of Highlights which I loved. RHill, TX

  13. I had a LOT of these books as a kid, and collected a lot more when my own girls were little. Jerilyn's favorite one - Panda Bear's Paintbox, and we read it over and over and over again - until her baby sister threw up on it one day. A few years ago we found it online. I gave it to her for her 40th birthday.

  17. Our favorite Little Golden Book was Mrs. Hen Goes to Market. I could read it so Andee and Lynn would laugh out loud, especially the part where Mrs. Hen’s pocketbook landed with a plop in her backyard. 😂

  22. I have some little golden books I adore. Little Black Sambo ( I thought the tiger turning to butter was how butter really was), Nurse, Nancy, Dr. Dan, and the one about the bunny who painted the snow. I can't remember it's name right now.
