Pass the …

Potatoes, baton…gallbladder?

I was convinced my other baby brother had no gallbladder. My parents, my baby brother,  my sister, my two daughters, my niece and I all had surgery to remove our gallbladders.  For years my other baby brother has been the oldest with a gallbladder…now he passes the gallbladder to his son Josh the next in line.

My other baby brother got real sick on Thursday night and will have gallbladder removal surgery this morning.  The surgeons were all too busy to do his surgery on Friday so he awaits his turn in the hospital…feeling very little pain with a bit of a sleepy look in his eyes…the pain meds are working nicely to keep the edge off the pain.

Years ago in 1926 before my father was born my grandmother had a severe gallbladder attack while she was pregnant with him.  She had surgery to remove her gallbladder, they didn’t know at the time if the baby (my Dad) would survive…well he did and he must have passed on the “sick” gallbladder part.

I had my surgery back in 1995 or 1996, I could eat plain toast and drink 7-up that was it….anything else would bring on an attack.  I was so happy to finally be diagnosed, I had to have a HIDA Scan to make a definitive diagnosis. My surgeon advised me to go out and eat pizza as soon as I could to find out if the surgery worked!  The only problem I have noticed over the years is that you never want to over eat.

My other baby brother and “she who sees robins first.”

She had surgery on her hand on Wednesday and my brother was supposed to be “the nurse”…the best laid plans sometimes don’t work out.  We sent over some chili for them on Thursday and I thought for a bit that it might have been my cooking that pushed his gallbladder over the edge but luckily he got too sick to eat it.

  1. Is this gall-bladder thing you all suffer from usual?
I don't think I have ever met anyone who has had their gall-bladder removed. Or heard of any cases either except where the gall-bladder was damaged - say, in a car crash.
Here's hoping your other baby brother is feeling better for his surgery.

I like the sound of your toast and 7-Up diet. I suffer from IBS and at my very worst I was reduced to eating nothing but beef and pineapples.

  2. My daughter has just had her gallbladder removed at the age of 54—I thought she was too young for this, but there was no choice. She became very sick and had to have emergency surgery. Several members of my family have had this operation, so I guess the tendency to gallbladder problems is hereditory.

  3. No one in my family has ever had gallbladder surgery, so it all evens out, I guess. Glad your other baby brother is losing his, finally. I wish him well. :-)

  4. Thankfully, no one in my immediate family has needed gallbladder surgery; however, my nephew's wife had hers removed after she gave birth to my great-nephew.

  6. Well they are certainly boosting the economy of their local medical community! I certainly hope she does not do anything to hurt her hand with this new complication arising.
Bummer though - - surgery is never fun.
When my mom's gallblader was removed, they said parts of it had calcified!

  8. Prayers for full recovery for your brother. Now your family is gall bladder free! My friend who moved here from Chile once told me that gall bladder removal is very common there, I don't know why. She said most people in Chile have their gall bladders removed, not sure that is correct.

  9. Hope all goes well with surgery. I can't say I enjoyed having the pain, but I sure did enjoy getting rid of my gallbladder. Best surgery ever! Well, other than a total hyst but that's a dark room that I hope to never go back in to. My daughter has been having pain and I think it is gallbladder related, but her family doc said no. I say, go to a better doc and get the proper tests done.

  10. That's an amazing streak of gall bladder trouble. Gallbladder problems are not nice. On the other hand the surgery has really changed.

  12. I am the only one who has had the gallbladder removed in my family 21 years ago . I had a 6.4mm size stone blocking the bio-duct and the gall bladder was backing up into my body with poisons and double its size I had to be on antibiotics and pain killers for two weeks before they could take it out I was very ill and lost lots of weight in a week and could only keep down water and broths it was brutal I was doubled over for weeks before not knowing what was going on as it would come and go and it has done damage to my insides . Hope all goes well for them and they have a speedy recovery .

  13. I'm glad it wasn't your cooking that brought on your brother's crisis. Hope he makes a full recovery.
I happen to be the only one of my family who still has her gall bladder. In fact I've never had to have any surgery and the thought of it really scares me so I hope I never do.

  16. We have had several people with gallbladder surgery in my family, too. My grandmother, mother, cousin, and my son, Dagan. I still have mine. (Knock on wood.)
