Well I did it! I accessed his port…I stabbed him with that long needle right in the port without fainting, or knocking myself silly when I hit the floor or getting a sub dermal hematoma, that would require brain surgery and an extended hospital stay and psychiatric therapy after I had total amnesia and only recognized Chance.
Blood returns went just fine and the infusion went off like clock work. I disengaged that long old needle and covered up the owie with a hot pink band aid…and he didn’t die or even get sick.
I was exhausted after all that and came home and took a nap. One more week under the direction of the nurses and then we will do the infusions at home.
Big sigh of relief! I was a TAD nervous…when I woke up that morning it was my first thought of the day. I thought about feigning a sour stomach and retiring to the bathroom for the day…but I soldiered up!
When we get settled in here at home with the infusions, I will train him so he can do his own infusions if the need should arise.
Can you tell that sometimes I irritate him…oh well keeps him on his toes…he thought I forgot the camera at home!
He wasn’t as tired this week, but then he has been on Prednisone for shortness of breath. His last dose of Prednisone is today.
I am finally feeling better and I have finished all the antibiotics for the infection in my jaw. Hopefully the infection is all gone!

ReplyDeleteGood for you. It doesn't sound really like something you wanted to become expert at, but you did, as you said, you soldiered up. Far Guy doesn't look all that happy having his picture taken like that. He knew where it was going to end up: on the blog. :-)

ReplyDeleteGlad you managed to do it, I don't think I could have. Hate antibiotics, half the time they end up doing stuff to me that is worse than the original infection.

Hubby here is on Prednisone too. Hoping it does the job it's intended to do. I always thought I wanted to be a nurse (my mom was) but things went in another direction. Now have had some practice, like you. I think I would have felt more secure if I had actually had the training. Good for you for getting the job done! And we like the photos of Far Guy.

ReplyDeleteGood for you! Before long, you'll be a pro and forget how nervous you once were. When I first began self-injecting for MS, I was petrified -- it took an hour for me to muster up the nerve to do it the first time. After a while, I just stabbed and kept going. You'll be great -- and Far Guy will soon be smiling, not scowling!

I knew you could do it. I hope the infusions help a lot and that he can have a better summer this year. Tooth infections are bad and I do hope you are free of that. I bruised my left hand shoveling snow in winter and the bruising on the inside of my hand turned into inflammation. I kept thinking that it would stop but it kept getting worse. I was having to manually make one finger go back into place. When it flares up bad I tape the bad finger to the good one and in a couple of days I am back typing and have a lot less pain. Old age sucks.

ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. I probably would have fainted right away. I hope I never have to give shots, because I would just be worthless at it. Thank goodness our daughter is a nurse and she lives less than 100 feet away. Praying FG is home soon and feeling great!
