Wistful Wednesday:1958/59

This is a photo taken in the old farmhouse where I grew up.  It was taken late in 1958 or very early 1959.  My Mom took the photo.

Evelyn Connie Carey (2)

That is me with my hand on my waist.  My cousin Evelyn is holding her oldest daughter Christine who was born in October of 1958.  My baby brother looks on.

In this photo we get a peek into the pantry that was at the west end of the kitchen.  I can see dishes on the shelves and what appears to be a curtain on the window. ( I do not remember a window in the pantry.)

On the wall is the little bluebird with a hat that held potholders, a “Last Supper” plate..and on the right side of the photo a basket of something.  The white enamelware coffee pot is on the stove.

Evelyn is my oldest cousin on my Dad’s side of the family. She will be 74 in a few months.  This photo was taken when Evelyn was 20 years old.  No doubt she was over to visit one Sunday afternoon to show off her beautiful little girl.

People don’t visit on Sunday afternoons like we used to back in the 1950’s and 1960’s:)

  2. Wonderful. Your old photos and thoughts always trigger fond memories for me. Sunday was the visit the rural cousins day for us. A visit to Farmington where there were really farms was often in order. Now it's just another suburb to the Twin Cities....

  5. I love that picture. It evokes the old days to me. You were a cutie back then, what yellow hair you had! Of course you are careful not to show me what you look like today, but I suspect your hair is probably still quite light colored. You know, the silver threads among the gold? :-)

  6. Sweet photo. Cute kids. Coffee pot on the stove brings back memories. I think every farm wife had one of those.

  7. Your Aunt is a beauty! Guess it runs in the family, huh? Sunday visiting has faded just like going to Church has faded. For some folks, that is. God and family have been put on the back burner in this society.... sigh.....

  8. That's a great photo. Like you, I get a kick out of looking at the decor and things in the background of old pictures. We have a picture taken when I was about 4. The wallpaper was hideous!

  9. I enlarged the photo, and it looks like maybe the curtains in the pantry were to hide the shelves.
Larry and I visited our mothers most Sundays, and I still do.
Four lovely looking young people in that photo!

  10. I remember the chrome table and chairs of my childhood. The table was large and had a worn, red top that had a chip at one end. The chairs were hard and had been recovered in elephant hide. The table was dismantled and stored in the loft of the barn in the 60s and replaced with a new oak set. The old chairs were brought out when more seating was needed at the table. What a sight - heavy oak chairs and chrome-legged elephant hide chairs side by side.

  13. You are right - people don't visit in the same way. And I share your love for background detail, it's what make such photos as this even more fascinating.

  14. Little did we know that those old pictures can tell us so much info by looking in the background.

  15. They really were the good old days, for us back in the late 1950's.

  16. No, people sure don't visit much anymore- I blame the internet, and smart phones. Somehow a text just isn't the same as hearing someone's voice...I worry we are losing touch with others.

  17. I see your comment about Sunday afternoon visits has struck a chord...I'm not sure we can fix the cause on one set of reasons, but it is sad to see the loss of that personal connection. On the other hand, if we didn't have any of those new ways of connecting, I'd never have "met" you or enjoyed your blog!

  18. Curtains can be used for things other than windows. If you don't remember a window there, perhaps the curtain hid something else. Or perhaps it was the door for the pantry? I had a curtain for a door to my room in two different houses...
    Have a wonderful evening!

  19. Cool electric stove too! Yes Sunday visits lasted a long time and there was absolutely no rush.

  20. I spent a great many Sundays at boarding school, I'm afraid. But when at home, we always had to go out for a walk.

This is such a sweet picture.
