The Third Day of Winter

It snowed here..not sure how much yet..  It snowed the night before I had surgery.  The snow stick says three inches..but I know it was more than that because it was over the top of my boots..

The surgeon is a cute little French Guy..pleasant for a surgeon.  You know sometimes their bed side manner sucks..but this guy was okay.  He thought he knew Far Guy..I don’t know what is up with that lately everyone seems to think they know Far Guy.

The anesthetists name was John..I got some kind of a block..where they put a tourniquet on your arm and then they wrap it with a blue elastic bandage and then tighten everything up till it hurts and your whole arm is cadaversish looking..I looked..then they injected something that really burned and hurt like the devil..then they knocked me out..

When I woke up I was talking about blogging and they were all laughing..who knows what I told them. They bandaged my hand and I had a nap in the hallway..I cannot for the life of me remember how I made it from the operating table to the gurney..

I am not supposed to get my hand wet.  I am supposed to keep it iced and elevated and keep the bandage in place till next week when the stitches come out.

The stupid bandage leaves alot to be desired..it shifts and is irritating.  This morning I had to rewrap it myself.  The pain is much better today. I think I have three stitches ..maybe four.

It seems you have four pulley systems that work your thumb..you only need two to function. I asked the question why do we have four then?  The Doctor said that it has something to do with growth and needing more as we are growing.  So he went into the base my thumb and released one of those pulleys..and my thumb will be perfect again once it heals.

Far Guy has bronchitis…he got really sick on Tuesday night while taking care of me.  I made him a Doctors appointment.  He didn’t want to go..I made him..I went without pain pills so I could drive him there..the Doctor gave him antibiotics..thank goodness..because all the way to town he whined “it’s a virus they aren’t going to give me anything for it anyway, this is just a big waste of time.”  Yada Yada Yada..

I am at the mercy of Far Guy for help bathing and for fixing my hair..I have an interesting new style..I have long hair and it is all caught up in a pony tail holder at the top of my head..kinda…it’s good thing the messy look is in.

Jen, Andy and the boys are here now, they arrived last night, Little Elvis and Miney are here too.  Tonight the girls will be here and they can help me finish decorating the tree upstairs.

I didn’t get quite everything done..but at this point it is what it is.  It is a good thing Far Guy and I work well together I can help him wrap packages with one hand..and he can apply liberal amounts of scotch tape and help tie beautiful bows:)

  1. Set down! Let your family do the work!

There do you feel properly scolded now? :)

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  2. Do you remember the episode of 'Mash' when Hawkeye and the character played by his father in that episode each had to operate with one hand...they had to help each other...

  3. Jinglebob said it well: you should be having them wait on you. Of course Far Guy wouldn't want to go to the doctor, he's a man isn't he?? :-)

I love that picture, which you seem to be able to take just fine. Glad to hear that thumb will heal up perfectly.

  5. Glad you like the Dr. and that is funny that you were talking about blogging when you awoke! I know that bandage is irritating and I had to laugh at Far Guy giving you a "new look!" So glad you talked him into going to the dr. Hope the meds make him feel better soon. Now is the time to just enjoy what is, and the blessing of having family and beloved pets home for Christmas. I wish each of you a blessed time together.

  6. Glad all went well. Tell Far Guy to take it easy - broonchitis is no fun.

We celebrate Christams tomorrow - kids are excited! So I wish you and yours much joy.

  10. You make the perfect couple, each helping the other, your strengths combined.

Tell both of yourselves now to TAKE IT EASY!

That's what your family is for, now give them a chance to show you how much they can do for you.

    Have a wonderful Christmas.

  12. I would milk the injury for all it is worth with your kids. You take care of everybody so it is time to let them do the same for you. My wife has had that same cold as Far Guy for quite some time. She was sleeping sitting up for a while but last night actually slept through. It is a dasterly cold. Merry Christmas to you and Far Guy and pet the dog for me.

  15. Just remember that both of your health(s?) is more important than any decorations. I am glad you have some young people there to help out. You are a wonderful wife who in the midst of barely leaving surgery made her husband go to the doctor. Let's pray that at the end of the weekend, we find you both doing much, much better.
And I like the picture of the three dogs. They look like they are having a great time. - - - - - P.S. It would be fun to have a video of your husband fixing your hair -- - - even if you didn't share it with us.

  16. I think I told my anesthetist how good looking he was when I was coming out of my anesthesia following carpal tunnel surgery...there might even have been a proposal in there too. Amazing the things we are apt to say under the influence.
I am glad to hear that you are doing a little better. Too bad Far Guy has to feel so crummy.
I hope everyone is on the mend soon and that you have a wonderful Christmas.

  17. Merry Christmas!!! Having surgery does not sound fun. I had my colonoscopy a couple of weeks ago and I was DETERMINED not to say anything stupid when they knocked me out - but sure enough....I kind of did.

And - I planted tulips yesterday! In the mud. I'd rather have 1/2 of your snow.

  18. Oh Far Side I am so glad you are getting better! I've been worried. I think you should cradle that hand with your other one and let everyone else do all the work!
    Have a very Merry Christmas!

    Kisses,

  19. Yes, both of you milk your medical issues for all they are worth in the next couple of days, and hopefully you will feel much better by next week.
A Merry Christmas to you all!
And a kind of funny anesthetist story...I had a colonoscopy done a few years ago, and the anesthetist was my next door neighbour. Talk about em-bare-assed! The nurse kept assuring me that he would be standing on the other side though:)

  20. So the doctor WIF turned out to be a winner--excellent! Glad to hear you're recovering so well--both because I like you so much, and because I know I'm not far behind on those wear-and-tear injuries.

    Merry Christmas, my friend!

P.S. My friend Pauline never leaves you comments (because her husband did a security-related work at the air force base here and he's justifiably paranoid) but she reads you every day.

  21. I know that whole, didn't get it done oh well feeling. I've been struggling with lung crud of somesort (Dirt gave up long ago telling me to go to the doc) no fever like last year's pneumonia, just constant hacking and wheezing and the inhaler has failed to dent it. But on I go. Keep plugging away. Did all our shopping on Wednesday, well almost, need a few more doodads for family stockings (the married girls and theirs have stockings still at our house - long story) But for the most part we are done with shopping and we didn't do to awful bad. Well withing budget, now the trick is does everyone like our brand of thoughtfulness. Any who, yesterday I had to get some things started in the hot house, doing stuff here at the main house and wheezen my lungs up. Dirt and Bet just seemed to be ambling around without a care in the world. Hmmm. Then when I finally gave up on having stuff done, I sat and called a Netflix time out. As we sat there something clicked in Bet's head. "Oh, is this Thursday? So that means tomorrow's Friday. And FRIDAY is Christmas Eve." Dirt chimes in, "oh yeah it is isn't it!" Yes, they were both off a day. Loping around here like they had all week.

Oh well, what's done is done, what isn't isn't. Thank goodness I stocked up on gift bags for some reason last year (I don't really like them, I like traditional wrapping but what the heck, they take less than half the time, I'll be usin' them.

I'm so glad you did well in surgery and kept everyone entertained with blogging stories, it is always important to wake up and have people laughing. Then you know you've done your job!

There is a clerk in our Olympia Joanne Fabrics that you might start looking like. Ran in there on Wednesday (not for a quilting project to have done by Christmas, that's the old Lanny, she is now thankfully gone). Any way from far away, where they have you stand before you get to the check out desk, her hair looked sweet, all curly and wonderful, like I wished all my life my hair could look like for longer than three minutes in front of the mirror. Then it was my turn. She complimented my on my eye brow rings, most folks don't even see it, then I saw why. Her hair looked like she had gone on a three month backpacking trip and left her brush behind. No dread locks - that would have actually looked okay, just random knots and tangles, one or two complete fuzzed up messes. Underneath you could see where at the beginning of the back pack trip her and her friend were braiding embroidery thread and beads in their hair but then they discovered that they forgot their brush and gave up. To keep the mess out of her eyes, she had the front part pulled up into a top "pony tail" the likes of which I haven't seen since my oldest was three and wanted to do her own hair. I think I need new contact lenses. And you should have your daughters do your hair while they're with you, and then "she who sees Robins first" can help you after that. Sorry Far Guy, but Dirt says it's important, after all Connie represents your family when she opens the door or drives you to the doctor.

  22. OUCYy!!! Hope Far Guy kisses your thumb to make it all better, and I hope it still functions enough in a few months to hitchhike. hahaa
Hope you have a wonderful Christmas...don't worry...your family will kick in and help you!
