Slush

 Recently I ran onto this old recipe.  Rhonda gave it to me about 1977 or so.  It brought back some sad/good memories.  Her penmanship is very distinctive.

I made something similar using a can each of frozen orange juice and lemonade using whatever water is called for and about 1 1/2 cups vodka.  I also put it in an ice cream pail and let it get slushy.   Take out enough to fill your glass and then add 7 Up to brighten up the drink. 

Rhonda has been gone a long time, she was a good friend. She graduated from High School with Far Guy and we lived next door to her and her husband back in 1970.   She had MS and died from an infection in 2009, she lived her last years in a Nursing Home.

Hark! Back! Issue #12

June 30 Update: Far Guy was admitted to the hospital in Grand Forks ND on Tuesday afternoon, he has a lung infection…perhaps by the time you read this he will be much improved and out of the hospital. 

July 1 st 9 pm update Well he is improved but not ready to be discharged yet he is very tired, I spent most of the day with him. His breathing is better, he is still getting IV  antibiotics.

An Old Recipe Box

I have an old recipe box. I paid a whopping 84 cents for it at KaMeapART a long time ago. The price sticker is still on the inside cover.  It was manufactured by Ohio Art of Bryan Ohio.  Imagine that something that wasn't manufactured in China....it may be collectible.  It has seen better days...kinda like me.  This recipe box is tin, it is a funny goldy/yellow color and has daisies on the top and a pot of daisies on the front. I have lots of other recipe boxes some tin, some wood and some a heavy cardboard.  I just keep tucking recipes into this old one.

What is on the inside is what is important. A very disorganized bunch of recipes, the favorites are toward the front. When I am in a pinch for an idea nine times out of ten...this is where the recipe will come from. Over the years I have collected recipes from friends and noted on the recipe who it was from.  Some are on recipe cards and some are on scraps and bits of paper.  Some are handed down from one person to another...tried and true.

Arvilla's Pie Crust (Arvilla got this recipe from Emma Lyons who used to cook at Doc's.)

5 Cups flour

2 tsp salt

2 Cups lard

1 Cup cold water

Mix with your hands and a fork...makes 12 shells

On the scrap of paper there appears a quote "Savor Every Moment, Take Joy In Every Day" I recall that day over coffee when I asked Arvilla for her famous melt in your mouth pie crust recipe.  She said "You can do it kid"  well I saved the recipe for too long without trying it...because if I have a question there is no one to call.  It's funny how a little slip of paper can bring you to tears.  Arvilla died last Saturday:(

Arvilla was a wonderful neighbor and friend, I still miss her friendship. 

Last week at the Fly In a relative shared with me that at the Father's Day Fireman's Picnic someone made the best apple pie with the flakiest crust...so flaky they must have used lard.  Made me smile and think of Arvilla.  Possibly it was her recipe. 

The scrap of paper remains in my recipe box. I wrote at Arvilla's a long time ago.

Blast from the past

 I was searching for on old recipe.  Funny thing I never found the recipe but I did find this. 

Some kind of game was played...not sure what...not sure who kept score but I came in last (4th) place. Paige and Maddie are just one point apart...Savannah was clearly the winner!

I like to play games...board games, card games if you name it I will play it!  Far Guy used to play Scrabble with me a long time ago. 

In the Winter Jen and Andy like to play games in the evening.  I think it is a great family activity! 

The old recipe remains someplace in oblivion...but the score card remains in one of my recipe boxes:)

On the back of this sheet of paper was hand written pattern for a floral frame that I wanted to make.

Yesterday our high was 72 F or 23 C eh. 

Supper was scrambled farm fresh brown eggs and an English muffin.

Not much new here, same old same old. 

I am working on recipes, mostly I sit in the evenings and copy them off their scraps of paper and get them on proper recipes cards.  A few made it to the Ipad.

I have some more carvings to fine tune out in the woodshop if the weather ever gets warm again.  It will someday, but those beautiful summerlike days a few weeks ago spoiled us.

The Calendar Wars:  I try to keep “stuff” on the calendar so I know what is coming up or on what day we need to go to the clinic/hospital.  Someone just writes things down…in several different months on the same date but not the correct month. I shall prevail but it is a struggle. Perhaps I should hang up one month at a time instead of the whole freaking year.

Someday Project

Whilst I was cleaning out the kitchen cupboards and drawers I finally got to the cupboard with the recipe boxes.

The box in front holds small recipe cards and a post it…that pink post it is Far Guy’s Impossible Italian Sausage Pie. ( He knows right where to find it.)  Brown up a pound of Italian Sausage then put the cooked meat in a 8x8 baking dish.  Mix together 1/2 Cup Bisquick Mix, 1 Cup Milk and 2 eggs dump on top of sausage.  Top with your favorite cheese.  Bake for 35 minutes at 400 degrees.   The alphabetical system looks like it might work but it doesn’t…all the favorites have been pulled to the front of the box.  That is my Spaetzle recipe in front.  I bought this box in about 1976, it was a winter project and there was a chain letter recipe swap going on and I needed someplace to put the recipes.  It was one of those chains where you added your name to the bottom of the list and then sent out some recipes to the top person on the list. Eventually I must have reached the top of the list!!

How many recipe boxes do you have?

This one is full of recipes that are favorites or ones that could be favorites. I bought this box in 1995 to organize recipes that wouldn’t fit into my other recipe box.

It is full to overflowing with handwritten recipes…and computer printed out recipes.  Some are cut off packages…some are used all the time…some have never been attempted.

This is the someday project.  It was a Christmas gift a long time ago. 

Someday I will transpose all the favorites from the scraps of paper.  The cards are there…ready to go.  I added two favorite recipes on larger index cards that were just hanging around in the cupboard…homeless.

I must be a recipe hoarder.
