A sign

There is a sign of Spring out there.

Can you see them?

How about now?  The Pussy willows!

Far Guy and I went out for a ride on Ranger Blue looking for Spring.  Other than deer in our yard, a couple  ducks down at the river and a chippy feeding on a deer carcass...the Pussy willows were our big find for the evening ride.

We made pizza for supper.  Far Guy putzed the day away.  I did some laundry and worked on the parts for May Baskets.

Minnesota weather: High 53F or 12C  Low was 39F or 4C.

Surprises!

A package in the mail from South Dakota!

Sara writes a blog called My Sewing Room and sews some lovely things and I admired the cat fabric she chose for this bag!  The bag has three zippered compartments inside. It is the perfect carry along that will hold numerous things!  Thank you Sara!

Another nice surprise was that Spring has arrived momentarily with the Pussy Willows.

We are not holding our breath on Springs arrival as Winter will be back in a few days with snow.

Spring has sprung

Far Guy put away his winter boots…mine are still out.  He carried out the patio table and commenced to woodcarving outside.

We were down at the lake over the weekend.

The pussy willows are out.

Straight lake

We wonder if the ice will be off the lake for opening fishing.  Time will tell.

Yesterday the last of the snow left the farmers fields.  Soon we can watch for the first of the wildflowers…Marsh Marigolds.

Catkins

The fuzzy little catkins that are an early sign of spring have sprung.

Dead Beaver area in spring

The river at the Dead Beaver Area is a nice backdrop for some Pussy Willows.Pussy willows

They give me hope that spring will come someday.  The daily snow flurries will stop, the North wind will stop blowing and our daytime temperatures will go above the 30’s maybe even into the 40’s.

Signs of Spring

Some days are spring like and then we are thrust back into the arms of winter.  This time of year is a push pull between Old Man Winter and Young Princess Spring…we know she will eventually win…but he makes it miserable some days.  Yesterday it was almost 70F or 21 C eh but the wind off of the lake was cold.

I put the ice chisel, snow shovel and the walk de-icer away for the winter.  I grabbed my parka and took it upstairs to the closet…and the snow stick was leaning so I took it out of the ground.  I am certain I have irritated Old Man Winter.

Ice on the Millpond

The fisherman have stopped driving vehicles out on the lake.  They fill their sleds and walk out on the lake.

Pussywillows

The Pussy Willows have emerged.

We saw a Bluebird, just one over in David’s trees ( must have been an early scout).  There are no Robins to photograph yet.  Last night just before dark the yard was filled with Juncos….there must have been over a hundred of them.  I think that means that snow is coming usually the Juncos bring snow with them.

Far Guy cleaned out all the Bluebird houses…we are ready to welcome nesting Bluebirds!

Head above water

I am just trying to keep my head above water this week. I have had appointments every day this week. Those old poking and prodding appointments at the regular Doctor..and then at the eye Doctor too..he wanted to do some fancy smancy tests for Glaucoma and corneal thickness.  I got new glasses that I will use for driving at night.  AGE..we are ALL GONNA EXPIRE..(now I feel like Gary Busey on The Apprentice..between him and Meatloaf I am entertained on Sunday evenings).

I was scheduled to make a trip to Mpls/St Paul on Saturday to tour the Capitol Building..I had to cancel..there is just not enough of me to go around. They had a waiting list..so now someone else will be able to go. Someone that isn’t trying to keep their head above water.

I just want to stay home one day..well that ain’t happening again today.  I am hopeful that Saturday or Sunday will be all mine..it seems my day is always one day off.  I know I sound like a selfish old broad.

My Potassium is still very low..I cannot keep my levels up.  Now the Doctor has increased me to three horse pills a day.  I am pretty disgusted about that. Perhaps that will kick in and give me the added energy I need.

I insisted the Far Guy get the door on his truck fixed..you could not open or close the passengers door.  To get in you had to either jump through the open window like a teenager or drag your old fat body through the drivers door over the bucket seat and the stick shift to the other seat. It was all unsafe..not to mention uncomfortable..especially after multiple stops..one day I thought about just riding in the way back..in the truck bed. I wrote a check last Friday after the door was fixed at the auto body shop.  Their bank bag was stolen.  Well that caused a bit of excitement on Monday morning and caused me to lose one day this week..I closed accounts and opened new ones.  Far Guy was fit to be tied..and I tell ya if either of us would catch that criminal he would be trussed up someplace tarred and feathered minus some body parts. Yes, we could have just watched the account waiting for suspicious activity..that would have driven Far Guy nuts and kept him awake at night.

April 9 first pussywillows

Another sign of spring..the first Pussy Willows.

It has been a week and it ain’t over yet..I am off to bake Birthday Cupcakes for the grand girls so we can deliver them later:)

Wistful Wednesday :1920

What a wonderful looking bunch of kids in 1920! I love the way the little boys took off their caps for the photo. Far Guys Dad was six years old, this might be the first grade class. The littlest girl probably doesn't belong to the class, as her brothers arm holds her in place. Far Guys Dad is the boy on the right in the striped shirt. The little boy on the far left has a lunch box, and several of them have pussy willows.

Legend of the Pussy Willow
One day in early spring, a mother cat and her kittens where exploring the forest along the river near their home. A beautiful butterfly drifted past them and over the water. The kittens, being young and inexperienced, leaped into the air to try and catch the butterfly, but instead landed in the swiftly moving water.
The mother cat cried helplessly while her young kittens struggled against the current. The kittens were having a hard time, and she was afraid they would soon drown.
Along the banks grew a wise willow, with graceful branches that bent all the way to the water. The willow, seeing all that had happened, bent its branches further into the water to try to rescue the kittens. Each kitten grabbed with its sharp claws, and was pulled gently to the shore by the willow.
To this day, the willow is honored for its heroic deeds by the tiny fur-like buds that sprout each season as the rivers start to run in spring. (Polish legend)

It is just about time for the pussy willows here in Minnesota, they are native here (Salix discolor) a shrub that has soft grey catkins of the male flowers. Pussy willows can be found in other northern states and in Canada. Pussy willow a Minnesota spring alarm clock! :)
