Acorns and leaves are falling out of the trees. It looks to be a good acorn year. The deer will come into the lawn and eat most of them. My other baby brother says you can put them in hot water until all the tannins are cooked out (using clean water to boil them up several times until the water remains clear)...then you can roast them and make a kind of coffee. Who knew?
Mums
We had another quiet day. Far Guy did some wood carving and I did some laundry and organized some "stuff".
Minnesota weather: High was 74F or 24C Low was 46F or 8C. We had a couple of rain showers early in the morning Tuesday.
Supper was Apple Pancake. Far Guy enjoyed it...he said it was easy to swallow and didn't hurt his mouth.
Far Side
The old timers would make bread out of them too, after boiling out the tannins.
ReplyDeleteIt was a lovely day here!
ReplyDeleteI’m addicted to coffee. I can see one would try to figure out a drink that tasted the same. Pioneers probably figured out how to use acorns for coffee. Other plants were used too.
ReplyDeleteFG is wanting to eat. I hope his ordeal will end soon. I know it’s like continuing torture. You both stay busy with an agenda. I just flounder.
Interesting about the acorns. I need to find some good prices on mums this fall. Our gardens need a facelift so to speak.
ReplyDeleteI am always glad to hear that FG enjoyed eating something. Apple pancakes sound good!
ReplyDeleteNo fall temps here....89 today....uffda! Apple pancake sounds good. I haven't made those in a while. Maybe soups would be easier for Far Guy. I make potato soup and chop up turkey lunch meat in each bowl for some protein. Easy on my digestive system.
ReplyDeleteI smiled reading your post because I just wrote about acorns too — even about making acorn coffee! Who would have thought? ☕🌰 I love your photo of the flower, such a gorgeous color. Autumn really is in the air!
ReplyDeleteApple Pancake sounds delicious! Autumn is my favorite season. Moderate weather, no or low humidity, and basically no bugs. It is also a beautiful time of year with the trees changing. We don't get as much of that here as you see further north or take a drive into the mountains.
ReplyDeleteOur neighbour has an oak, but it never has acorns - I wonder if this year will be the year!
ReplyDeleteNow I am thinking about filing an Acorn Coffee recipe away "just in case".
ReplyDeleteWe're seeing a few golden leaves falling already too. Our ash trees are always the first to show signs of fall. The mums come in such rich colors. High today is high 60s, so it's much cooler than normal. But then again, normal hasn't been normal in a couple of years.
ReplyDeleteIt's cool enough here I have to shut the windows during the night! YAY!
ReplyDeleteThe leaves are falling here too, but no acorns. We fell to 3C/37F last night and I didn't think to cover the tomatoes. They look okay this morning, but if this keeps up we'll be picking them green. Seems silly as last week we were in the midst of a heat wave.
ReplyDeleteLove the mums...they're such a pretty sign of fall.
Acorn coffee. That's new to me. Apple pancake sounds really good. We had rain yesterday morning, too.
ReplyDeleteIk heb een poosje "eikeltjeskoffie" gedronken, jaren geleden, smaakte prima.
ReplyDeleteHier vallen de eikels in alle soorten en maten...
The mums are so pretty. One thing that Sam and I learned is that acorns are not good aroun a pool. They cause a brown stain that is most difficult to get up. Glad you all are getting some Fall temps.
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to try some acorn coffee.
ReplyDeleteI also think the apple pancakes sound so good.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of acorn coffee. Your deer will take care of those acorns, anyways. :)
I love pancakes.
ReplyDeleteYour photo of mums reminds me it is just about time to switch out the tired plants in the front porch planters for some mums.
ReplyDeleteWe did some work in the garden this morning, but I got very tired and hot. Now it is 81 and I am inside.
Fall is definitely in the air, It always reminds me of the Johnny Cash song ~At my door, the leaves are falling, a cold north wind does blow....
