We had two large visitors, but the baby took off before I could get a photo.
He was eyeing the suet.
See the red feathers along the beak...that is how a male is distinguished from a female.
Fun creatures to watch. The baby was smaller and had a fuzzy red head (crest)...no doubt the father was showing he/she around.

What a beautiful bird. I only get the Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers at my suet feeder.
ReplyDeleteWe don't see those around here and maps show them bypassing most of my state for some reason. But that is okay with me as we have enough woodpeckers around that sometimes make my life difficult as it is pecking on metal parts of my house to attract mates.

ReplyDeleteWell, aren't you the lucky one! I seldom see a pileated woodpecker and have never seen a baby! Love his stance trying to get into the birdfeeder.

ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty bird. We've had a couple of woodpeckers this summer. Mostly I see house finches and chickadees, with the occasional cardinal. We hear the cardinals all the time but don't always see them. Yesterday I watched what I think was a woodpecker but just not positive. And the wild turkeys are plentiful in the yard several times a day.

ReplyDeleteI love these woodpeckers. I saw my first one live about two years ago. (other than in a picture) ... I always think they look prehistoric! How neat that you saw the male and the baby....I'd love to see what the little ones look like. I've only ever seen them up North!
ReplyDeleteWe had pileated woodpeckers this spring in the woods but they went silent. I wonder if they do that until their young ones are old enough to leave the nest?

ReplyDeleteI do remember seeing these birds at very rare times when I was in Minnesota. You got some good pictures even though the little one escaped. I had a fluffy baby robin on my patio this morning but it left as I tried to photograph it.
