The past few days we have gotten much needed rain, not sure how much…but enough to made a puddle in the driveway…that usually means an inch of rain.
What do you do on rainy days?
We picked up flowers from most of the cemeteries that we visited last week. I am always discouraged. At my Paternal Grandparents my flowers were the only ones there. At my Maternal Grandparents my cousin Vickie always takes a hanging geranium. BUT wait…two grands out of how many …40 some and only two brought flowers? Far Guys Maternal Grandparents only had our flowers…his Paternal Grandparents fared a bit better with several visitors…some with real flowers! I have various other relatives that are ignored too…so I leave flowers.
Perhaps I should plant Iris.
Not sure who will take over for us when we are no longer able…
We used to take real flowers but then you have to haul water…so we take nice bouquets of silk flowers. They are drying in the woodshop now and will be packed away for next year. Far Guy likes to get them picked up right after Memorial Day because it makes it easier for the people that mow and trim.
Having a holiday on Monday always messes me up, I am never sure what day of the week I am on…must be an old age thing.
One day we headed to town to do errands and buy a bag of soil for the flower bed out front. I got the flower garden weeded and the new soil all mixed in…and we have plants to plant when ever I feel like planting in a drizzly rain….maybe today. So far we have two sunflower seedlings that may survive and a nice bunch of wild violets…Marigolds and Salvia will join them.
we also had a wet holiday weekend, but I'm not complaining
ReplyDeleteI usually end up cleaning on a rainy day -- closets, drawers, that sort of stuff. Funny, I never run out of places to clean!
ReplyDeleteI've never taken flowers to a grave, but then I've never lived in the same town as my relatives who have passed on. I used to go with my grandma and it was a time for her to pass down the stories of the "greats" I'd neve met.
We keep silk flowers on my relatives' graves some 2 hours away. We try to check on the graves every 3 mos. As you say, when we're gone, then what?
ReplyDeleteWe had thunderstorms overnight. We needed the moisture. We have not added any flowers this year. Best wishes with yours.
We're having a light rain, but we are in a drought.
ReplyDeleteMy parents are buried a 6-hour drive away. I keep them in my heart, however.
Hubby and I always put out silk flowers at the graves. I am the only family member (on my side) living around where the parents and grandparents are buried. On hubby's side he is the only family member that visits the graves. It is really sad to see this beautiful, respectful tradition going away.
ReplyDeleteI am the same way with a long weekend. I kept thinking it was Monday all day Tuesday. It's a fine thing you do putting flowers on the graves in remembrance.
ReplyDeleteDecorating graves seems to be my assigned task, too, and has been for decades. My sister and niece give me money to purchase new flowers every four or five years. It saddens me to think no one will place the flowers when I can't.
ReplyDeleteThe younger people just don't visit cemetery's like we did.
ReplyDeleteYou are good people to tend to graves.. Someone will surely follow your good example. Let's see...rainy days...hmm...red SUVs kinda like driving through a puddle or two. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm the only one who takes flowers to all the graves.I'm also the only one who likes genealogy...the two seem to go together. I think I'm the only one who actually likes the cemetery.... After I'm gone no one will really remember. It's sorta sad, really.

I think you are correct Linda genealogy and graves go hand in hand. I like cemeteries too:)
DeleteI'm too far away. Most of my relatives are buried down in Cokato, Mn. My sister and my aunt who recently died were the only ones in the family I know for sure who visited the graves. My mom and dad didn't anymore when they retired to Florida and were too far away but I remember going with them as a kid. When my mom comes up from Florida this summer my sister is bringing her up to the cemetery. I've always liked cemeteries. I find them peaceful, calm places.
ReplyDeleteI live about 5 hours from where my family is buried. I send money and my aunts will put flowers on their graves for me. As a genealogist, I understand the important information that is preserved at grave sites. But I don't want a place where family feels obligated to keep decorated. I've asked my children to spread my ashes in Key Largo and enjoy a vacation with the money they didn't spend on a headstone.
ReplyDeleteI hope the younger generation will care when they get to our age.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could get back home so I could visit my families graves. Such a nice tribute to them....they notice I'm sure!
ReplyDeleteA Holiday Monday totally messes me up too. I get confused easily anyway so....
ReplyDeleteI think placing flowers on graves of relatives is a worthwhile task but happen to live 1500 miles away from my home town.
There were very few flowers on graves when we visited one family cemetery on Sunday. I think it has become more of a small town thing where folks live close to where they grew up. I don't. But I do like participating in the tradition, if only for a few of our family members who have passed on.
ReplyDeleteI have wondered too who will take over the job of decorating the graves when I am no longer here. Harley will go to her great grandparents and my angel baby, I hope. The others I just don't make it around anymore. Too expensive to buy the flowers.
ReplyDeleteLooks lovely and lush... Irises would be nice - or perhaps poppies or tulips?
ReplyDeleteDepending on the season, rainy days are jam days, or depending on how I feel about it, maybe not!
