I had a day out last week…I traveled deep into the woods to a Weaving Shop. My friend Ann was there, she is the Artisan bread baker/soup maker/not afraid of snakes friend.
This is the oven that bakes the bread. It is a home made oven, built with concrete, clay and straw.
The fire is built and quickly the oven is hot enough for bread.
Bruce (the Weaver) takes the coals out and swabs the oven with a wet mop.
The bread is ready to go into the oven.
Ohhhh the smell when it come out of the oven! The wheat bread sticks were yummy… I liked it all except the mushroom bread. Yes that is chocolate bread in the photo…I liked it…Ann sent some home with me, Far Guy liked it…Jen and Adam did not ..they were expecting a brownie…
Ann made Chicken and Wild Rice Soup and it was wonderful.
I was invited back…any Monday…soup and bread at 5. Bruce is a weaver and spinner. I asked him if I could bring my spinning wheel…he said YES, he will look at it and tell me what I need.
I will take Far Guy with me…as they have a pet snake who resides in the gardens …except when he is traveling through the grass by me…screaming me..poor Ann…she might be deaf in her right ear now and I am certain I almost pulled her poor shoulder out of the socket. Nope no photos of the snake either… it was a Garter Snake…a bigger one…I suppose the freaking thing is having babies.
Have I told you I am really really really afraid of sssnakes…well I am.
More about Bruce and Weaving some other day.

Oh how interesting about the oven! The breads look so good. I'm not crazy for mushrooms, but John sure likes them; never heard of mushroom bread! Good news about your spinning wheel, too. Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteinteresting friends
ReplyDeleteThat is a serious bread oven! It all looks wonderful. Beautiful photo of the chives.
ReplyDeleteA interesting friend and an interesting adventure.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a neat oven, and the bread sounds heavenly. I would wear tall boots next time! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's your weak for wildlife, Connie! A bear and a snake, what's next?
ReplyDeleteAll that food ready for the oven looks sooo good! Those are some good friends to have.
WeEk, I meant week!
ReplyDeleteThat oven looks wonderful! I hate to tell you, I like snakes. I hope you still like me anyway. :-)
ReplyDeleteIf I lived closer, I'd sneak into your vehicle on a Monday for bread, soup, and conversation. I'll leave the snake admiring to Bruce and Ann, though.
ReplyDeleteIt all looks delicious, lucky you, well, except for the snake.
ReplyDeleteThat reminded me of my trip to Quebec Canada back in the 80's
ReplyDeletethey had out door ovens, and yes it smelled wonderful.
Very interesting oven! So the residual heat is enough to bake the bread?
ReplyDeleteI also do not like snakes. Might have something to do with my brothers throwing them at me when I was little.
Oh yes the clay in the oven bakes the bread...sometimes too fast! It was about 600 degrees for awhile that day:)
DeleteThis is a totally fascinating post! I do hope you will expand on it. If I'd gone to that much trouble with the oven I'd slap the first hands that reached for a sample.
ReplyDeleteFUN! FUN! DAY!
ReplyDeleteLinda
Oh, yes. the weaving and the spinning and the bread baking and the soup, all so good! The snake - I am also a screamer! Like Shirley above, it might have something to do with my brother chasing me with them when we were little. Shudder.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! What an adventure--bread, snake and all.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you had a spinning wheel. Cool! :)
I have more of a phobia about insects and creatures that fly right at you or crawl on you. Bees and wasps seem to love me...and they can make me scream.
I always thought a pizza oven would be fun but this loos like a great idea. You could never walk in my garden as the sleep in the bushes and crawl in droves. I need to by a new pooper scooper to pick them up with. My one did break. I tolerate them more than I use to as I am thinking today they live but tomorrow you may die.
ReplyDeleteI can just imagine how wonderful that bread would taste. Nothing could measure up once you'd had that kind.
ReplyDeleteNow that looks like a fun day to me, snake and all...and all that good looking food! I didn't know you had a spinning wheel. My dream. I really want a spinning wheel and want to know how to use it. Hope you will post about it.
ReplyDeleteYou had an awesome experience...even with the snake. there's something about homemade bread that is absolutely the best.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a wonderful outing. Sorry but I love Garter snakes.
ReplyDeleteI have a fear of snakes as well. And a garden, which I like to tend. And believe me, the two don't mix! So I go out anyway, and hope I can avoid them. I saw only one last year, and none this summer. Yay.
ReplyDeleteI am not afraid of snakes. But I have that same fear of mice so I understand. That bread oven is amazing!! I'll bet the bread was tasty!
ReplyDeleteThat looked like a really fun day:)
ReplyDeleteMMMmmm - that bread looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteI'm just catching up with you. I hate snakes too and had a rattlesnake coiled at my doorstep the other day. Of course I screamed like a girl and there was no one but me home and I HAD to get in the house to finish baking (or I might have hid in the shop) so I use the garden hose to chase it away.
ReplyDeleteI screamed to the first time I seen his large snake! You'll have to let me know when your coming some Monday night. I'll mix up an extra loaf for you. Was great seeing you. Ann
