Shell Lake

One day we took off to see what was happening over at Shell Lake.  Shell Lake is one of my favorite places.
Sled dogs trails along the lake
Looking north, you can see the sled dog trails along the edge of the lake.  See the hill on the far right, that is where the sled dogs live…my Uncle Hugo and Aunt Mia used to live there.
Shell River
Shell River winding its way toward the hills.  You can see the bald part on that big hill…years ago that was called Pine Point.  If you walk to the top you can see for miles.
Shell River (2)
The CCC built this structure…years ago when I was little there was a concrete walkway that went across those posts.  It is good to see the water is flowing.

From what we could see there were only two fish houses on this part of the lake.

We were way north of that big winter storm “Kayla” but we did get about a hundred flakes.

  1. I think 100 flakes qualifies you as having been in on the storm.

  4. Your header is so pretty and Valentine-y. Glad you only got 100 flakes from Kayla and I'm very happy I didn't have to shovel the 14 inches that fell upon my driveway in Minnesota! I think they will stop this silliness of naming snowstorms soon when they realize they're going to run out of names long before they run out of snowstorms!

  5. How lucky you are to live in the same area where you grew up. I envy you the memories that landmarks can bring.

  6. In a way I get to experience what it is like to be born and raised in the same place, with family all around, through your blog. So different from my own nomadic life. :-)

  7. Does the man with the sled dogs enter them in races? The Stage Stop over the Contential Divide is in this area now. One of these years I need to drag myself out into the early morning cold and watch them.

  8. We here in Minneapolis did get the Big Storm yesterday and there is quite a bit of snow on the ground. It looks like about 6 inches but I think it is probably more than that. This morning, right now, we are getting more snow which is predicted to be about another inch. I don't mind the snow because I no longer have to shovel because we live in an apartment. Our building is about a block from the Mississippi River and it is free of ice. A couple weeks ago there was ice on it but it is gone now.

  10. Sled dog tracks, how fascinating, somethings I'd love to learn to do, but here in the swamp it wouldn't be very practical.

  11. Looks like winter! I was hoping for some snow. We just came back from Oliver. There was the tiniest of dustings that came down while we were there, and then I think they got some just hours after we left.

  14. Beautiful country and glad El Nino is giving you a warmer than normal winter. I'm glad it's sled dog trails as opposed to the noise and tracks of snowmobiles. I used to love the quiet of a nice snow and would be on the farm sitting in front of fire enjoying it all and then all of a sudden...it sounded like a motor cycle gang disturbing the peace. They would go right through my property and wreck the beautifully perfect snow in the front yard. Sled dogs would be fine with me any day! Although I know they are wonderful machines for very practical reasons.

  15. I take it that the lake is frozen enough for ice fishing? With all of the crazy weather going on across the country, I have lost track of how cold it is in your neck of the woods.
I like DJan's comment above. I am always struck by how much family you are or were surrounded by. I transplanted myself away from the rest of my big family when I went away to college in the big city.

  22. Doesn't look like a lot of ice. I guess that's why there's only a few fisherman's ice shacks.
