The Baltimore Orioles passed through this week. I was hoping that they would stay and raise some babies. 
Apparently we were just a convenient place to eat on their way further north.
If you look closely you can see the grape jelly on this guys beak. Oh they love that jelly.
My Dad made me an Oriole/Hummingbird feeder. He gave it to me on Mother’s Day. Just in time to feed the Orioles.
It has spots for two oranges and two small containers, one we filled with sugar water and the other with Grape Jelly.
It is a very nice feeder..we will see if the Hummer’s find it..so far we have seen them but they have not seen the feeder. Far Guy had to rescue one that was trapped inside his Greenhouse/Workshop. He still calls it a greenhouse..he planted some Tomato seed and some Walla Walla Onion seed.
The grass in the yard is greening up nicely. Far Guy mowed some of the yard. He planted a whole bag of grass seed again this year, and he strewed wildflower seeds the other day. Then it rained:)
That is a beautiful feeder...gives me an idea of how to make one.
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine the wildlife that would be on a feeder like that. Four or five squirrels, crows, sparrows and others I would rather not feed. But I don't have Orioles, either. They are beautiful!

ReplyDeleteI haven't seen any orioles yet. They are usually here for just less than a week. Just about when I put out an orange, they leave. I always wonder where they do go to settle down. We used to get the Rose Breasted Grosbeaks for about a week too, but now they seem to stay here all summer. I'm in the north central part of St. Louis County, MN.

ReplyDeleteIt looks like you were well prepared for your guests. We are a truck stop/restaurant here for all kinds of traveling birds like orioles and buntings. They spend a few days, stoke up on food, take a bath and move on. Still it's fun to see them come and go.
ReplyDeleteYou have some beautiful pictures of the birds. I, too, wonder if you might get butterflies later on. At the Chattanooga Aquarium/Butterfly Atrium, they leave orange slices out for the butterflies and they seem to like them a lot.

ReplyDeleteI saw one oriole last week. He flew away before I could find my binoculars. I like the design of your hummingbird feeder. I've wanted to get a feeder but a lot of them don't look like they'd be very easy to clean and I've read that keeping a hummingbird feeder clean is especially important.
ReplyDeleteWe had a pair here for the FIRST time EVER this year...I was screaming in the house for my husband to come and see them..they were so pretty..almost electric orange in color. I made him make me a homemade feeder and put oranges up..they stayed local for about 4 days and came and went...I was so happy every time we saw them. How do you keep the ants away from the feeder? They climbed all over the oranges I put out for them.

I have a pair here for the first time and I think they might be staying.....I'll have to try out the jelly.......maybe they WILL stay.
ReplyDeleteI got an oriole feeder and put it out a couple of days ago. I really don't know how many pass through here and whether any of them stay for the summer. I'm told hummingbirds might visit this feeder too. Time will tell!

ReplyDeleteWhen I come to visit ..I will make him a baked walla2 sweet onion casserole. It is soooooo good. We have bullocks oriole in the valley. They are not as striking in color...but they make the hanging next and I love to hear them chatter. Do you remember the photo of the nest made with christmas tinsel on my blog
