Yesterday I got up early (before sunrise early) and went to the deer stand with my Dad. It was cold…frosty…we made our way on a well worn path to his deer stand by flashlight. It is a deluxe deer stand high in the trees with stairs, complete with movable windows and heat. It gets so cozy warm that you just want to go to sleep. I have not been hunting alone with my Dad since I was a teenager. My Dad likes hunting. I took my camera.
The sun came up and the watch began. We had some lunch, Dad told me some stories about his early working days when he left home at 16 years old and went to the shipyards in Berkley California with Bee and Hannah Kangas. I will write them down before I forget them and Dad is still around to answer my questions.
A nice buck walked in and Dad took a shot and missed. The deer made a quick u turn. The phone rang and it was my other baby brother asking “Did you get it?” His deer stand is not too far away. Dad said “No, I missed it.” Then Dad said “I cannot hear you.” My brother dropped his phone… BANG…my sister in law “she who sees robins first” shot the nice buck. Turned out to be an eight point buck. Shortly after that when Dad was all settled in again…I walked home. It was a nice day and the sun was finally out!
I came home had a piece of toast and finished sleeping. Later in the afternoon just before sunset we went for a ride. We saw a limping deer by the old Jack McGrane farm…and seven others along our route.
It was a nice day of deer hunting.
My other baby brother sat with Dad for a long time later on Saturday, Dad saw one more deer but couldn’t get a clear shot. So he will hunt again today.
I like that "turkey" in your header. Where did you find it?
ReplyDeleteThat does sound like a very deluxe deer stand!
ReplyDeleteThat stand is a far cry from the cold ground in the dark hours.
ReplyDeleteOur middle grand, Jake, got his buck yesterday during the youth hunt. The deer will feed many.
What wonderful memories you keep.
Sounds like you had a nice time with your dad . Lovely photos ! Thanks for sharing , Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love my dad, if he had been a deer hunter I don't think I would have been able to go along with him. I'm glad you're not like me. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy Dad liked to hunt and I went with him on one trip. Both of my parents worked in the shipyards in California durning the war.
ReplyDeleteSounds like good quality time spent with your dad.
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool that you did that with your Dad! Quiet, quality time in a warm deer stand....I didn't know they were heated...we've come a long way! I doubt I could kill anything, I was around guns but never went hunting...it's too late for me now. LOL! But wild meat is supposed to be healthier and leaner and I believe it! Glad someone got a deer that day...don't want you people starving up there this winter. Does it save money or is the cost of ammo high? Stay safe!
ReplyDeletePriceless Moments!

This deer hunting is very different from what members of my family have done for many years - a cold camp somewhere in the woods, away from home, and tramping in those woods, hoping to not have to carry our a deer carcass very far is they shoot one.
ReplyDeleteI never went hunting with mt dad. Women and girls didn't. It was a guy thing. We did enjoy that first meal of venison tenderloin!
The best part of this story is your getting to listen to you dad's story telling in your cozy deer stand.
That is SOME deer stand your Dad made! What a guy! Too bad he missed that shot at that deer. But maybe he will soon get one. No one in our extended family deer hunts. They do ducks and geese.

Since we are mostly open cultivate land , deer stands aren't used. Deer appear here like your last photo. Most deer here are mulies.
ReplyDeleteWindows and heat! I knew about fancy ice-fishing houses, but didn't know about such fancy deer stands. Spending that time with your dad was a wonderful gift for you both.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I just read your previous post...another box of Shiny Brites for 50 cents...what fun for you!
Hopefully, your Dad will get his deer the next time.
ReplyDeleteI've never been in a deer stand that fancy, only the kind where the heat comes from your battery-powered socks -- if you are lucky! Nice you can enjoy time with your dad.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun outing with your Dad, Connie. We tried to walk Lily this afternoon and even the State Parks were crowded with deer hunters in red and pickups with trailers hauling dead deer. I asked the rangers if they had maps showing closed areas of the Park "so me and my wife could walk our dog" . They did but since I'd forgotten to bring the proper colored vests etc. he advised against. Some day I'm going to write a book about my disasterously unsuccessful career as an bowhunter for deer. Or reenact some of the events for a standup comedy act....:)
ReplyDeleteSpecial times spent with your dad!
ReplyDeleteI hope your Dad gets his deer.
