We had a ground blizzard on Thursday. I do not have any photos because I white knuckled it home at no more than 30 MPH on glare ice.
I was at a longer than normal meeting at the library, from there I made a trip across the parking lot to deliver a package and then I went to Wally World to purchase a new microwave since ours was making weird noises and wouldn’t heat up anything. I may have lollygagged around a bit in the store.
At home Far Guy was fit to be tied. He and Chance took off to find me..he was picturing me in the ditch freezing to death. They gave up their rescue mission half way to town because of the treacherous roads.
When I left home it was snowing a little… no big deal. Four hours later it was a full blown ground blizzard that polished the wet snow that had fallen onto the roadway and created a layer of ice that shimmered in the sunset. However I did not know this..in town it was not a blizzard. I left town unaware. Well I soon figured it out. At that point I wished that I had taken Far Guys cell phone. Oh it was icy..fourteen miles at 30 MPH takes at least a half an hour. Several times I wished my bag with my camera was in the front seat instead of the backseat…buggers.
When I arrived safely in the yard..Far Guy was relieved to see me and Chance wagged his tail ninety miles an hour. Far Guy was a little upset that I did not call..was there a phone at the library..of course there was. Was there a phone at Wally World..of course there was..why didn’t I call?? Because there was no phone booth along the side of the road after I realized I was in a blizzard. I made it home safe..he was just terribly worried about me. He was a mixture of happy and angry all at the same time.
I stayed home and safe all day yesterday. It is suppose to be 48 degrees tomorrow and I am venturing back to town to complete a project I am working on..Far Guy said he and Chance are going to drive me:)
Whoa!!! Glad you made it safely home. I am not that good on ice.
ReplyDeleteScary, scary stuff but Praise God, you are fine. It is wonderful though, to have people at home who love you and don't want to live without you. It's a great gift some of us are given!
ReplyDeleteGlad to read you made it home safely,Connie. My spouse and I both did this driving home from work in a blizzard several times. She over 20 miles. The result was something we originally didn't think we needed. Cell phones for both of us...
ReplyDeleteGlad you made it home safely. That is the worst kind of driving. So maybe a cell phone does have some real use, huh Connie? I don't use mine often, but it sure makes me feel better when I get a call from my guy when I'm worried...
ReplyDeleteOf course, taking it out and using it in the middle of a blizzard while driving might not be such a good idea, either! :-)
Glad you made it home safe ! We traveld for a total of 4 hours yesterday to pick up our youngest son and went through all kinds of weather from snow to rain to sunny spots ! Sunny here this morning but chilly no snow on the ground ! Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteI would have been scared to death trying to drive home in that.....
ReplyDeleteHappy you made it home safe. Back in the early 80's, Atlanta had a freak ice storm mid afternoon and it took me 4 hours to drive my 30 minute drive home from work!!! My mom was beside herself with worry (in the days before cell phones!)
ReplyDeleteI remember those "white knuckle" trips through ice and whiteouts...even down here I have to be careful as storms(tornadoes) can crop up fast. I did run from one a few years back and actually glad I did as it hit the town I was shopping in so I was glad I hightailed it home. But like you..it was a surprise. They had predicted rain but nothing severe...and when you're shopping in these big stores you don't see the sky changing and no one came over the loudspeaker announcing anything. I need a phone with the weather radio in it sounds like we both do!
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice you have someone that worries about you and checks on you. I don't. I can go for days, weeks without the phone ringing and I worry about my "girls" if I would drop dead because who would know and come and rescue them? I try to leave lots of water and food bowls around just in case!
There is nothing I hate more than bad driving conditions. Whether it is snow, ice or torrential downpours! Like Change and Far Guy, I'm glad you made it home safe and sound! Amazing how the weather can change in a matter of miles!
ReplyDeleteHaving been a snow plow operator for 16 years, I don't worry too much about any type of winter driving. What I worry about is the other guy.... some of the things I've seen....
ReplyDeleteGlad you made it safe.
Those icy roads can sneak up on a person. Glad you made it home safe. Soon the ice will be gone for another season.
ReplyDeleteOh glory girl, I'm so happy ya made it home safe and sound. I've had a few of those drives home before. 'Seemed like they'd wait a little late to call a day when we were already at school.
ReplyDeleteI can remember once the buses turned around and brought the students back to school, parents were called to pick 'em up....that was sooooo not good!!!
Good thing ya had your Guardian Angel with ya!
Hunker down and may God bless your weekend sweetie!!! :o)
Good thing you DIDN'T have that camera handy. Besides you could just put up a white square and say that is what you saw. We'd believe it. Nothing, nothing worse than driving on glare ice in a ground blizzard. Okay--maybe surgery--but you don't have to drive.
ReplyDeleteI hate driving on icy roads at the best of times. What really disturbs me is seeing someone coming towards me snapping pictures or texting;)
ReplyDeleteThat picture is beautiful! Glad you made it home alright. I don't mind doing snow but I try real hard to stay away from ice!!
ReplyDeleteBoy am I happy you are alright!! And like you, I sometimes wish for my camera while I'm driving. But since Far Guy and Chance were so worried, knowing that you were white-knuckle driving and TAKING PHOTOS at the same time, well.....it probably wouldn't have bod well for you...fear does amazing things to those waiting at home.

Always unpredictable weather around here. I am so glad you got home okay. I guess you should take FarGuy's phone with you next time you leave them home alone. Or maybe you should have your OWN phone? I have always hated those terribly icy roads and when you can't see where the road ends and the ditch begins--uffda! Be safe!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you made it home safe.
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking back to the days without cell phones - we just had to sit around and be worried until our loved one came home. Before I married my husband I drove home for Thanksgiving and there was a storm. A normal 3-1/2 hour drive turned into a 9 hour nightmare. My mom was calling Dave. He was calling her - no one knew where I was (stuck on the freeway after a telephone wire went down and they closed the highway until it was cleared). Everyone was glad when I managed to get off the highway and find a pay phone at the gas station!
You've covered your nasty weather and all the emotions that go with it when somebody is worried about you.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it wonderful to be so loved and cared about? I loved this post..and am so happy you arrived safely. In Southern California it's the heat in the 100's I worry about. I have gone back home to get my cell phone. Makes you wonder what we did all those years before they were ever invented..before phone booths were everywhere.
ReplyDelete(can you tell how FAR on the other side of fifty I am? LOL)
Really glad to hear you made it home safely.
ReplyDeleteAnd glad to hear that Far Guy is going to drive you when you go again.
Have a wonderful Sunday!
now that is scary - but I'd like to be inside a nice warm window watching it.
ReplyDeleteGlad you made it home safely! I hate ice. I hate walking on it, I hate driving on it, and I hate looking at it!
ReplyDeleteWow sound like Dave and my drive was a piece of cake next to yours. We only had a few bad miles. Sure am glad my sister lets me have a cell on her plan. Makes life much easier to let Dave know whats happen and that I'm OK. Glad you made it fine other then white knuckle's. I've tried to talk Dave into driving a couple of times this winter. Ann
ReplyDeleteThe older I get, the more I hate driving on ice. And even when I remember to take my cell phone, if I ever need it it's usually out of juice. The photo is great, but I'm with those who are glad you weren't taking pictures while driving!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're home safe. It's definitely time for spring!
