How many degrees below zero?

How many degrees below zero before something important freezes off?  Like your nose, your ears or your butt?

I sleep real well during cold weather..it is the grumpy old bear part of me that wants to hibernate.

Yesterday morning near 4 AM  we were –25 degrees F..that would be – 31C.  Some people said they had –31F or –35C..but they may be part of the “Well we were way colder than you and proud of it”  crowd.

How do I manage..I stay inside!  Far Guy and Chance walked to the mail box..Chance lifted up one of his paws a few times..but then pressed on with their mission.

We made sure that the birds were well fed, the Downy Woodpeckers are making short work of the suet ball that we hung in the tree for them.

I am still holed up in the kitchen..I got some walls washed..some shelves and clutter washed and I changed the valence.. to a flannel one..perhaps it will make the room seem warmer.  I am moving at a snails pace..oh well..11 more days till lollygagging resumes:)

  1. If my butt would freeze off, I'd stick it out the front door. Rufus was doing the three legged dance too! Stay warm my friend.

  3. I experienced 25 below a time or two in Colorado. It was too cold for my car to start and I stayed inside until it got more reasonable out there. Glad to know you are in hibernation mode during that kind of cold. :-)

  5. That is just too cold for me. We have -2 degrees here and that is too cold. Stay warm and safe. Think I'll hibernate until winter is over.

  7. I don't like it when it is cold like that. I don't like it when we have humidity and it makes it seem colder than it is. I don't like it when it is windy and we get wind chill temps below what it is. I am a winter wimp, too. When it is that cold, you are right. Everything seems like it is going to snap right off. You can just feel it.
What is it about flannel that makes everything feel warmer? Just seeing it does the trick. I guess it is an association with experience sleeping in flannel sheets years ago. I put a flannel duvet on our guest bed a few weeks ago... and had a warm cozy feeling just looking at it!
I hope your temps return to normal, reasonable, seasonable temps!

  8. I've never experienced that kind of cold, and I don't think I really want to. Hopefully you don't get any wind with that:( We are supposed to get freezing rain today.

  9. I'll take. I'd rather have it cold than too hot anytime. I'm one of those people that is always hot -rarely wear a coat or long sleeves. It was chilly 12 degrees here yesterday. I get my best work done when it is cold, because I don't feel like a burning furnace is raging inside me.

    1. I guess I need to sign up for something so I don't have to hit reply to make a comment. We are having a heat wave compared to your temperatures. My shower drain did freeze up downstairs because I forgot to put anifreeze in it. We will be 19 above tomorrow.

  11. We got down to 19-20 below a couple nights ago, but today it's 3 degrees already at 11am. I'm glad you're feeding the poor birds. Sometimes I wonder how those tiny, fragile little birds survive these harsh temperatures at all! Amazing. Stay inside and warm!! :)

  12. You've got me beat in temperature and you can have it. I try to keep active outdoors when it's cold. I find if you hide indoors you get pretty soft.

  13. I'll keep the flooding - you can have the cold temps.

When I worked in Ontario on winter - it was -40° and at that temperature it didn't matter if you were in Celsius or Fahrenheit. It was just cold.

  14. I put out suet and the birds are ignoring me. It's been out for about a month now. We are getting to 72 on Saturday. I know. January. Being a transplanted northerner, I'm not believing it and this is our 4th winter here. I flannel valance sounds very cozy to me. What a great idea.

  15. Oh my gosh, I just couldn't take it. The coldest I've been when we lived in Missouri was -8. I thought I was going to die! Unlike the other commenter, I would take heat any time over cold. That's why we now live in Arizona. (As long as I have A/C) - I'm impressed with your wonderful sense of humor while you are freezing your **** off.

  16. My ambition freezes off when it gets below 32F. Stay warm this weekend!

  17. I'm just the opposite of some of your commenters...I don't like to be cold but I dislike ac even more. I know how to dress warm. I live in AR now and summers here are like winters up North. You close all your blinds and stay in. I think it's awful...I'm going back to the North where I can have windows open, a few ceiling fans going and be able to garden and sit outside with some sun tea in the summer. And I miss the snow and "hunkering down" during a good snow storm in the winter. Thanks for sharing your Winter with me...I miss it!

  18. Haha. Stay warm, Far Side. Wouldn't do to miss your lollygagging day. ;-)

  19. Girl, at least your movin'. I fear I'd be frozen stiff at those temps.

I remember a winter when Geek Son was just a tot that the temp dipped to -24 here. The coldest I've ever seen 'round here. It happened to be the night our fireplace flu caught on fire. (some things just stick in your mind)

God bless and enjoy your 'snails' pace sweetie, I think your doin' great!!!

  20. You are making great progress! Perseverance pays off! I think this is the second time you have mentioned lollygagging. Is there a trip planned - - - or are you just taking a break from the winter cleaning & projects at that point?
