Dish Hoarder

I admit it..I have a dish problem. I like dishes..I have a hard time resisting them…I think some of them are calling my name at garage sales.

I have a drawer full of old dishes..I got this set for Christmas back in about 1983. Every year they become older..I rarely use them..sometimes the soup bowls if we have lots of people for supper.

This is what the dish drawer looks like normally..the salsa dish was a gift from Riley after we took care of him ( he is a Sheltie that lives on the lake).. I am not sure where the cookie plate came from..most likely Jo..it is a pretty wildlife plate and I use it for cookies.  The tin blue creamers can be used as cups for little kids.  I am still looking for a cover for the clear butter dish.. and I like my glass measuring cup.

I  love all my drawers..nothing better than drawers. They are heavy duty.. Far Guy built all the kitchen drawers and cabinets for me..and I helped.

The flannel valence is up..looks warmer to me.

The dusty dishes are no longer dusty.

Having open shelves in the kitchen is sometimes a pain. I have more sets of dishes there..a tin set, a set of Fiesta, a set of Cobalt Blue Avon dishes most likely collectable too..and a set of Loon dishes  Thanks goodness all these sets are just place settings for four!

I took lots of photos in the kitchen, after the drawers were clean I photographed the contents.

I have several more sets ..a set of China for 20..when will I ever have 20 people in for dinner?  And many sets of real antique dishes that are packed away in boxes.  I am fairly certain I am a dish hoarder..what do you think?

I am still in the kitchen..slaving away..onward and forward to another bank of drawers and cabinets.  I am happy to have two thirds of the kitchen completely done.  I have eight more days until lollygagging can continue:)

  1. I suspect I could get hooked on collecting dishes. I have always thought that one has a personal relationship with a plate and I can still find old dishes ticked away in the loft which can take me back to a specific period of my life. But I must stop - I have not room in my life or my home to collect something else.

  2. I decided to collect totally different design settings. I think I have eight of them now. I can pick what I am in the mood to use...from cream floral to multicolored to black. I know. I'm weird. ;)

  3. You crack me up. For one who doesn't like to cook, you sure have a lot of dishes. I am selling some sets, I no longer have room for, at our Memorial Day Rummage Sale. Drive on down!!!! Happy cleaning.

  4. I used to have lots of dishes that I didn't use. When we moved up here I got rid of them all and have one simple set, which we rarely use anyway. My hubby has a few dishes that he's accumulated over the years, and I kept the antique bowls from my grandmother. Otherwise, it's just a few. I don't miss them. I know where I can get more if I need them (your place)!

  5. Oh, thank goodness, I thought it was only me that had this problem!!! I have about 10 - 12 sets of dishes (some old, some new) along with all sorts of other odds and ends. And I almost never cook either!

  6. Woohoo...almost there!!!

Oh darlin', I am in~love with your beautiful kitchen. I have a very small 'galley' here at the Ponderosa and very little of the counter space I yearn for.

I've given allot of my dishes to the kids. Heck, I thought if I wasn't usuin' 'em they might as well have 'em. Heeehehehe!

    Don't worry...I didn't cut myself short.

Have a great day sweetie!!! :o)

  9. You are definitely Looney!! (I enlarged the photos, and really noticed all your Loon objects). Really nice kitchen, and your cabinets are just lovely. A requirement in my kitchen though, is a window over the sink.
I could easily collect dishes...have some, which usually never get used, but have managed to keep it to just a few.

  11. Open cupboards may be a pain but I love the way they look! I love dishes and am constantly looking at different things in the thrift store, but rarely buy because I already have more than I need now! Your kitchen looks good and yes, that curtain definitely warms it up!

  12. Wow! What a beautiful kitchen and I love your drawers; they are great for all those dishes. I'm the same way with hoarding dishes and yet, the other day when neighbors came calling, I used our everyday thrift store finds for a cup of coffee!

  13. Your kitchen is gorgeous, Far Side. All I have are cupboards but now that I've seen your kitchen I may want to go for more drawers in the farmhouse kitchen. Thanks for the ideas!

  14. I have to ask what "lollygagging" is? I always thought it was just laying around and goofing off but not sure now. I have never purposely collected dishes but I've inherited them and they take up a lot of room so I recently packed them away in boxes. Not sure how to get rid of them or if I should. They're pretty fancy but I'm not a fancy person.
All of a sudden though I have become interested in bright colored dishes and ceramics. I do have some real fiestaware which I love and there's another kind that I like but for the life of me I can't remember the name of them so I guess I won't be collecting any of those! LOL!
Your kitchen is so nice! Far guy is talented! Those are beautiful cupboards!

  15. I used to have the goose pattern and loved it but have moved on to antique "old" stuff. Nothing matches ... if it's Ironstone and not too badly chipped, it's mine. I also collect serving dishes .. my granddaughters love going into the pantry to chose dishes for potatoes, veggies, salads, etc. The only matching that I have is my china that I got when we got married and my sister Cara's china. I use them for very special dinners.

  16. Those cupboards are beautiful. You and Far Guy did a wonderful job on them. I had five sets of dishes until we moved south, 3 years ago. I asked my daughters who wanted what. Only Daughter #1 didn't shout loud enough. I now have one for everyday and one old set I found at a tag sale. It was made by Pope/Gosser and my maiden name was Pope so I had to get them. I am trying to lighten my load and let them have fun with them while I am still here to enjoy it. That or I've watched to many episodes of Hoarders! Ha!

  17. There are worse things than being a dish hoarder. Sounds like they bring you joy.

  18. I love your kitchen. It is beautiful!!! The wooden decor is right up my alley. I used to have some of those goose dishes - finally sold them in a garage sale a few years ago. I like dishes, but glassware is my weakness. Depression glass or any kind of colored glassware captures my attention. Most of mine is cobalt blue, but I like it all. Hard for me to go to flea markets - I see so many things I want, I could easily become a glass hoarder.

  19. I too love dishes. I have had to go through all my dishes and start giving them out to my children (so I can get more, I'm sure). I think they need to collect dishes. I let them pick....they get to pick of the ones I don't want. My favorite are the ones from my Grandmother...I remember eating on them when I was young. No one gets those until I die.

  22. Hello Far Side, my name is Dreaming. I'm a dish hoarder, too. The addiction is a tough one to deal with. After all, I am confronted by dishes all of the time - even if I don't go out of my way to see them. Life is tough!
I love your kitchen... love your dishes....oh and yes, the flannel brings immediate warmth into the room!

  23. I'm sure you are a dish hoarder. Although you could hoard worse things. But who am I to say? My eyes glaze over when it comes to dishes. My judgement is somewhat suspect too!

  24. Your husband is super talented with a saw, hammer, and nails!!! Of course, he has a great assistant working with him to help create a phenomenal space for cooking and storing. I am truly impressed with your skills and the results!

  25. If I had more space I'd have more dishes.

  26. What delightful progress! Just make me feel better when life and the home front is clean and organized.

I love the drawers and would welcome that over cabinets. Great job, Far Guy.

  27. I tend to hoard dishes as well but my kitchen is not as large and well organized as yours. Drawers for dishes would be wonderfu.
