This is an old photo from years ago. I found it among the hunting and fishing photos in my Father In Laws album. I finished that scanning project and made a CD of the photos and packed it all away in the trunk. One more project completed! All the photos were marked with who, when and where with a photo safe marking pencil.
Uncle Willard, Lola, Evelyn, Don and Aunt Louise
This was taken sometime in the early 1950’s. That is Far Guys Mom at the end of the table. The photo is taken from Far Guys Dads spot at the table. So I can safely say he took the photo. It was taken in the formal dining room at their home in Park Rapids Minnesota.
I think this photo has a spring feel to it, the ladies are in short sleeves, the linen tablecloth is the one with the green leaf pattern. They have just finished a platter of sweets of some sort and the silver creamer and sugar set is on the table. I bet it was taken on a Sunday afternoon. Years ago Sunday afternoon was a time for relatives and visiting.
Uncle Willard is not in the best health. Most of his children were here for Thanksgiving. On Sunday afternoon they converged at our house along with other cousins from Detroit Lakes Minnesota..there was no linen table cloth..and no one showed up in a suit…but there was much laughter and lots of reminiscing and coffee and a plate of goodies. Alaska Guy and his brother from Washington DC were very impressed with this photo..it was one that they had never seen before. I made them both copies. ( Lola and their Mother Louise are sisters.) It was a fun afternoon..almost like old times visiting with the relatives on a Sunday afternoon:)
I love the '50s pictures, don't you?
ReplyDeleteWish I had drapes like that.
Very nice. It's true. Sunday afternoon was for visiting relatives. Or go for "rides" in the Studebaker. :)
ReplyDeleteI noticed the drapes, too. They have a definite retro feel to them. Everybody was so dressed up! I didn't even remember when people did that just to visit. Bet the men even had hats, too.
ReplyDeleteI sure recognize Uncle Willard and Aunt Louise - sorry to hear about Willard. My son went to their daycare as a newborn until almost school age - do we have some funny memories!
ReplyDeleteI like this pic....There's just something about it, I'm not sure what it is!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photo full of memories ! We put all our photos on a dvd as well and have given them to family ! Sorry to hear about Willard. Our family used to get together every other Sunday but after my parents had passed and some family has moved farther away it is harder for all to get together now , but we keep intouch by e-mail. Have a wonderful day !
ReplyDeleteReally makes you realize how things have changed. It probably was a Sunday because back then you dressed for church on Sunday and often went visiting afterwards. This is what all the grownups looked like to me when I was little.
ReplyDeleteThose drapes sure look familiar. Not quite the same pattern, but that style was so popular.
Glad you all had a good visit. Sorry to hear Uncle Willard isn't doing so well. The years really march on...relentlessly.
It is so great that you can have them all around to get together. We did that years ago but now families have thinned out and moved out of Iowa.
ReplyDeleteThose could be my relatives. The drapes, fancy table setting, clothes, hair... the 50s seem to be very much alive in my memory when I see photos like this.
ReplyDeleteI think my mother had those drapes. I love that the men wore suits. I don't remember a time my family had a formal dinner. My Dad only wore a suit to a wedding or a funeral and it was the same one. And...probably some shade of brown.
ReplyDeleteThis photo could have been taken on a Sunday afternoon at my house. When I was a youngin back in the 50s, we always had a group for Sunday dinner. Gosh it brings back memories. Funny, but when I first looked at the photo, before I read your post, I was thinking to myself that this might have been an Easter dinner gathering.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy wistful Wednesday photos. Many of them, as is today's, are in the age of my parents , uncles and aunts. Most things and activities are very similar so it brings back memories.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great shot - very retro.
ReplyDeleteI miss those relative visiting days.
ReplyDeleteMama wasn't much of a hostest, but it didn't seem like we required anything fancy. Everybody brought something.
Now I feel stressed just thinking about entertaining.
