Inside the red coffee can

The most important part of the winter survival kit is the red coffee can.

Here is ours refreshed.

The metal can on the left hold the tea lights...you would be surprised how much a tea light heats up a metal can!  (The pretty wrapped tea lights came from my parents 50th Anniversary in 2000) the lighter and matches also go into the metal can.  Then there are hand warmers and snacks. It all fits in the red coffee can nicely.

Cross that project off my Fall project list!  Note that many people have shovels, bags of sand, jumper cables etc inside their vehicles all Winter.

Years ago we had a friend who was stranded in a snowstorm...before cell phones were popular.  He burned newspapers and all kind of paper in his car to stay warm.  He was a salesman so he had lots of stuff to burn!

Minnesota weather:  Cooler   High was 44F or 7C   Low was 36F or 2C

What's cooking?  Spaghetti and GF cheddar biscuits

  1. We do have kits for our vehicles too but mostly something to stay warm with and a bottle of water along with the requisite ice scraper. We used to do a bit more but now consider our cellphones the most important safety equipment.

  2. Always best to be prepared. When I started driving, I drove a very old, broken down car - so I always carried a large milk carton full of car stuff - I have a full set of sockets, coolant, oil, transmission fluid etc.... Even though I'm driving, newer, better cars now - that milk carton is still in there - it came in handy too many times in the past!

  3. I've always carried blankets in the winter but must admit I'd never thought of tea lights.

  4. I like that you showed us the contents of the red can. Kind bars are one of our favorite snacks especially the Caramel Almond ones. I don't know if all their bars are GF but that one is for sure and it is a bit like a candy bar. I will pass that info on to my brother and sister-in-law in upstate NY. Thanks.

  5. The hand warmers are a really good idea to add to my winter kits in our cars. We've become much more cautious about travel in questionable winter weather as we've gotten older. But we still keep our winter survival gear in our vehicles.

  6. Good idea with the tea lights and tin. We keep a blanket in the car year round, and Ted always has tire tools in each vehicle. We keep a kit for tornadoes at the stairwell to the basement.

  8. It’s important to stay warm if stranded. I bet in your country one could freeze to death. Glad you’re prepared.

  9. I see that it has now become cold there - a high of 44! We are cloudy, sometimes drippy, and high's about 55.
Your winter survival kit is a good idea. We have that stuff and a lot more in our home earthquake kit.

  10. It's great to have survival stuff in your car but I don't think I'd want to burn anything in a car.
