We planted lettuce in the little red wagon. Parked it on the patio next to the kitchen window.

A bright spot in the day was the Fern Leaf Peony that Larry sent me a few years ago.
Everything is so dry...the grass out in the full sun scrunches under your feet.
Yesterday we were busy all day. We had a hump of soil that needed to be taken care of moved to a hole and leaves were all stacked up against the east side of a garage...I mowed the front yard...we had to fix the freaking mower again. I told Far Guy how I would have designed that poor excuse for a part that falls off. He agreed that would solve my problem...so would a new lawn mower. If it doesn't rain I won't have to worry about the lawn.
I spread some diatomaceous earth trying to control some big biting black ants. Then I noticed some PI and the war was on...but first I had to fix a sprayer...a couple of times...I had parts...Far Guy said to throw some of the worthless spray nozzles in the garbage. He was working on some car parts and I kept interrupting him.
Finally got the sprayer fixed and went off to kill something...Poison Ivy. Gosh it felt good!

Sounds like yesterday was "Fix-It" day for you. Makes me wonder who designs the stuff we use these days. Nothing seems to last very long before it breaks.

ReplyDeleteI can "hear" your frustration. We did get some nice rain last week, but now it's hot and dry and will be even hotter over the weekend. We have a guy here today trying to fix another leaking spot in our old sprinker system.
ReplyDeleteWe were promised rain on Tuesday and got about 4 drops! Not nearly enough. I laughed at your "killing something" remark. Some days are like that aren't they? Dennis told me to go buy a new mower, the push kind, not riding, as the one that Mom has is a bit of a pain to put it mildly. We sold ours when we sold the house. Stupid move, but we certainly weren't planning on buying another house so soon.
ReplyDeleteI told him nope. I would definitely get the wrong one and I don't think it would fit in my car either. We'll have to get one when he gets here in a couple of weeks. Hopefully mowers will still be for sale and not snowblowers. You know how that it.

The peony is fun to have but they do not bloom for very long. I threw out some old lettuce seed and it actually is growing. It will be fun to have fresh lettuce. I will have to water things as we are still very dry.
ReplyDeleteI love the fern peonies, they are just so pretty! It's hotter than all get out here today (35C/95F) and after a bit of time outdoors this morning I'm staying inside in the air-conditioned house. Everything is growing quickly now and will as long as I keep them watered.

ReplyDeleteI saw a picture of the United States and it showed a straight line between the dry and the wet. We are the wet. Flooding last weekend with high winds and crazy waves over 20 feet up on roads by the lake. My husband mowed our elderly neighbors yard the one day it didn't rain. Ours might have to be cut with a sickle if the thunderstorms ever stop.
ReplyDeleteLove the lettuce wagon! An hour or so away is a "barn" restaurant inside an old dairy barn that has been been very elegantly spiffed up. The highlight is the "salad wagon" - a farm wagon made into a salad bar. It is the great array of lettuces, every possible topping to add, plus potato salad, macaroni salad, pasta salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, as well as fruit salad, cottage cheese, applesauce - that's just off the top of my head. The salad wagon special includes the three crocks of soup across the way - don't bother with anything but the Amish broccoli cheese soup with homemade noodles and several different loaves of homemade bread. Hopefully we can visit there again someday.
Uff. Yep, we've had more rain than you, but it is very dry here again.

ReplyDeleteMy lettuce just won't grow this year. I bought new seed and I waited and waited, Finally sowed again and I think 5 plants grew. An old neighbour told me "any idiot can grow lettuce". Not too sure if that makes me one or not.

ReplyDeleteGreat way to repurpose, and grow (moveable) lettuce!! Peonies are beautiful. Wish the flowers lasted longer. I used to really dislike them. The owner of the farmhouse we rented for many many years planted an old fashion variety in a small garden box right by the entrance to the human garage door. It flopped all over the tiny sidewalk. Every single time I went to my car, I had ants crawling on my legs. I really enjoy them now, as the newer varieties aren't as floppy - and mine are no where near a path :)
