Years ago my Uncle Otto had a huge boulder delivered to his yard. He put pavers around the front for a small flower bed and we picked out flowers from the greenhouse. One year it was Marigolds, Zinnias and lots of Moss Roses and one year it was Daisies. He painted Welcome on the boulder in Norwegian of course and had a chain saw carver carve him a Nisse. A Norwegian Nisse is a mischievous sprite that protects a farmstead or home.
The first year it was looking really good and the photo came along in a Christmas card.
Otto chained the Nisse down to a huge anchor in the ground behind the boulder.
We enjoyed seeing it every time we drove by.
Sadly someone came by and cut the chain and took the Nisse.
Far Side
It's a shame someone took the Nisse. I bet plenty of others besides you loved seeing it whenever they passed until that happened.
ReplyDeleteWhat can you say but...why? why? why? :(
ReplyDeleteIt is upsetting to hear the Nisse was taken. Frustrating to think about those who take others things.
ReplyDeleteIt's so sad that people feel that they are entitled to things that don't belong to them.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm sure the thief had a miserable life after stealing a nisse. My Norwegian grandma always threatened us with the nisses if we didn't behave and she always blamed them for missing things in the house.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe it. But my son and two friends, just graduated from high school, did kidnap a gnome and take him on a cross-country drive years ago. The gnome sent postcards home to its owners, and was returned when they got home a few weeks later.
ReplyDeleteSo sad that the nisse was stolen. I hope he dealt out some lessons to those thieves. Grrr!
ReplyDeleteSome people are just no damn good. Hope he was able replace it.
ReplyDeleteThat is so awful and whoever took it certainly couldn't display it as it would be noticed. I have realized after so many years that most people say and do nasty things because they are jealous...some will even pretend to be your friend. It was beautiful with the landscaping...thank goodness there's the picture! So people can still enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteReally, they cut the chain to take the Nisse? Clearly theft and not just a spur of the moment prank.
ReplyDeleteYour uncle created a nice display, with your flower help. Disturbing that someone would cut a chain and steal the nisse. I agree, bet the thief had bad karma.
ReplyDeleteWe need more Uncle Otto's who are original thinkers. He had a simple yet great creation.
ReplyDeleteYou don't say how long ago this happened, but I guess we can assume he wasn't returned. The nerve of some people, so d*mn frustrating. We made a really cute mailbox once. It actually won us a $100 prize in a neighbourhood mailbox contest. Not long after that someone stole it....
ReplyDeleteHi Karen It was a number of years ago, and it was never returned :(
DeleteYour uncle created a lovely little island of beauty. Too bad about the Nisse being stolen. We've had a number of items stolen from the front yard. I think those things get sold at a flea market ( not the local one, I don't think the thieves are That stupid).
ReplyDeleteWell, I hope that stolen nisse brought those thieves plenty of back luck on their farm.
ReplyDeleteThat was a very inviting welcome to his place. If the thieves had spent the time doing something on their own or working for it, maybe they'd be better off. But probably not a lesson they'd care to learn.
ReplyDeletePoor Nisse! Love that stone.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty. Love the rock. I can't believe someone would steal his Nisse. How sad.
ReplyDeleteNow days if you leave something nice at a grave, someone steals it!
