St. Urho saved the grape crop in Finland from the pesky grasshoppers….at least that is how the legend goes.
Every year we try to go to the St.Urho’s Day Parade in Menahga Minnesota. I made a trip over to the bakery before the parade they were almost sold out…I managed to snag one of the last loaves of flat bread. Yum! We had fun people watching before the parade began.
My camera card malfunctioned so I got two photos…I was disappointed but what can a gal do except learn from a mistake. FYI just because you think the card is in the slot correctly…the little door can still close…and when you finally look at your screen it says No Card In Camera… OH BAD WORD.
I managed one photo of St. Urho.
St. Urho was handing out Tootsie Rolls after the parade.
It was a wonderful 10 minute or less parade and the weather was beautiful! There were purple and green beads, purple and green licorice and purple grapes all handed out by The Nytes of St.Urho to the crowds lining the streets.
Nytes of St Urho handing out candy last year.
Chance got in the mood with the wearing of the St.Urho beads.
So where ever you are and what ever you do…a Happy St. Urho’s Day to you!
You are going to make"Oh bad word!" your catch phrase!
ReplyDeleteHappy the grapes were saved day!
Interesting precursor to St. Patrick's Day. It reminded me though of the character on Golden Girls with her tales of the doings back home where she'd grown up.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun parade and day.
ReplyDeleteWell, I suppose most saints were invented at some time, so why not one in the 20th century.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, I am all in favour of celebrating, at any time, there’s never got to be a reason.
Nothing like a festival to bring out the crowds, and so sorry you weren't able to get more pictures. That's quite a beard on St. Urho! We have St. Patrick's Day celebrations coming up tomorrow, and a Suds and Spuds event at the clubhouse.
ReplyDeleteBefore I met you, I had never heard of St. Urho, but now it's a tradition! Sorry about your camera malfunction, but the ones you shared here are just fine. :-)
ReplyDeleteI especially liked the picture of Chance with the beads. He would do well collecting beads in New Orleans what with his super charming personality. I think he would have a neckful.

In the days before digital cameras, I managed to snap photos at graduation for the school yearbook WITHOUT film in the camera! Many bad words were uttered when I discovered that error.
ReplyDeleteI forgot that the day was coming. The guy with all the hair seems a little over the top but it is still great. I always enjoy the parade and you could have shared some of the past ones and we really would not have known. I hate it when I accidentally hit a button and all the outside photos are blue.
ReplyDeleteHappy St. Urho Day!

ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this holiday! But I like it! We should celebrate it across the US. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy St. Urge Day!!!!!! Francine.
ReplyDeleteA fascinating tradition!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of the holiday either. Chance always looks like he is right in there celebrating with you. Oh, I really like the Eagle flag in your last post.
ReplyDeleteIt's great that people know how to have fun even if it only lasts for ten minutes. Theres lots of carry over.
ReplyDeleteGotta love St. Urho!
ReplyDeleteSomebody had a lot of fun and a little mischief coming up with that holiday!
ReplyDeleteHow fun and I adore this photo of Chance!
ReplyDeleteWell that's a new one to me!
ReplyDeleteHappy belated St. Urho's Day! I am familiar with St. Urho, but have not heard of the Nytes. Gotta love a ten minutes parade though. I hit the Nevis Muskie Days parade a few years ago with mr granddaughter and Ibthink it was about ten minutes, too. Fun.
ReplyDeleteOh, I remember standing in front of the statue of St. Urho in Menahga and reading the story of his grasshopper valor. (Lived with a Finlander for seven years once upon a time--learned about pasty, too.) You couldn't have had better weather!! Chance looks festive. ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat a day for a parade! Glad to see Chance enjoyed the excitement, too.
