Cooking

My stomach has compartments.  I don’t like my food to touch.  Especially fruits, vegetables and Jell-O. I don’t want a piece of cake on my dinner plate either…I have lots of dishes.  Sometimes when we are out for supper and cake is offered without a new clean plate I lay my dinner napkin on my plate and put the cake there… I know …sick isn’t it?

Her at home I serve up separate bowls of vegetables and fruit for each of us. I would never serve a salad without bowls.  I like a few dried cherries on my lettuce …Far Guy doesn’t …he likes sunflower seeds, almonds and a bit of sliced cheese. We both like leaf lettuce, we rarely buy head lettuce.

We had some left over chili.  I asked Far Guy if he wanted to join me in a bowl of chili with potatoes and carrots…you mix it all together and throw it in the oven whilst you have a nap!  He wanted plain chili…alrighty then…plain is what you get.  Chance thought my version was delicious.  I am not sure what that concoction is called…Hobo Chili maybe.   I haven’t made it in a long time….maybe I was just hungry for cooked carrots!

At the beginning of the week I make menus for the week before grocery shopping.  We don’t stray too far away from the plan.

Menu ideas are on the fridge….speaking of the fridge…Mr. Fixit was out again…a connection behind the freezer became unconnected.  Not on the outside either ..it was deep in the freezer behind a panel.  Mr. Fixit says it happens…a part gets moisture ( probably from the last time he tore the fridge apart) and then the frost pushes the connection apart.   I will be going into the local appliance store with the measurements for a new fridge and pick out exactly what I want…three strikes and you are out or you get a new fridge.

We really need some new menu ideas.  We seem to be in a loop that we repeat every fourteen days. Do you have any favorite recipes to share?

About noon everyday the same question is asked “What do you want for supper?”

  1. I messaged you on facebook with Stacy Makes Cents, 100 free meal plans. You might enjoy browsing her suggestions. You guys have a good Sunday.

  2. You are funny. But set in your ways, I see. I had siblings who didn't like their food to touch. My mother said to get over it. It all goes to the same stomach.
I don't want cold food and hot food to mix, so definitely I want salad on a separate plate. Not veggies though. We don't do Jello.
I never meal plan or make a meal list before I go shopping. I just see what's good or on sale or make it up as i go along. My shopping list is for the stuff we eat every day that we are getting low on. I seldom cook from a recipe. Lately we've tried going lower calorie, a little meat, a little carb, lots of fresh vegetables and green salad. Pasta now and then. But I feel like I'm in a rut too.

  3. You wouldn't like my cooking/eating plan, I'm afraid. I'm a fan of one-bowl meals. Bake a potato, load it up with veg, cheese, hummus, whatever's in the fridge. Fill the crockpot with broth or tomatoes, add whatever's in the fridge, eat for three days. Come to think of it, I do like my fruit separate, though!

  4. I hope you get a new fridge. Like you said, this one is just not doing the job well. Now you don't trust it. I am not an adventurous eater, but I also don't get bored with the same thing over and over. Sometimes I'll go out to eat and be reminded why I don't do it more often. Of course, it's different when there are just the two of us and we are not cooking for others. I used to be always wondering what to cook for dinner when I had a family to cook for. :-)

  5. Wow, I didn't think anyone else was like me. I can't stand for my food to be mixed together on my plate. My husbands just mushes it all together. EWW! LOL No meal ideas here. We are doing the LCHF deal and all of my ideas are based on that. We did try spaghetti squash yesterday for the first time. It was...interesting, but definitely would not ever replace the real deal in my book. Sorry about your fridge!

  6. I like your idea of menus. you make a menu and then you shop for the menu. Cooking gets to be a challenge as we age. The same foods become boring. We find it difficult to just get in there and make something. Good luck with your fridge. Mine's way past it's best before date.

  7. I've always made a list of meals for the week, too, mostly because without it when dinner time rolls around I go blank. This way I only have to think once a week.

  8. Yeah, my hubby and I seem to eat the same items week after week. But I don't mind if my food is all together on the plate. It all ends up in my stomach anyway! :)

  10. Do you have a slow cooker [crock pot?] I've been doing a lot of meals in mine -- but you have to have the food touch. So maybe that's a no-go for you.

  11. I am with you about the dishes for food. We get in a rut about meals and our taste is changing.
Food is being messed with by the government , some meat just does not taste the same as before.

  12. If your only issue is wanting your foods separated I think you are A-OK in my book. I wouldn't even count that as an issue...simply a preference with an exclamation point at the end of it. I used to do menus as there were 6 of us and we lived in the country and who wanted to run to town for an ingredient...10 miles away. Now, one menu item per week does it for me. I eat it all week and if it's something I really like I don't get tired of it. I'm especially fond of casseroles but I don't eat as much as I used to and yet I am bigger. Go figure! I also try and eat healthier which has eliminated many of the "rich" dishes I used to fix. I need a rotation plan though and I have started writing down the dishes I fix that I really like (especially the healthy ones) and I've also been separating them into seasons. I'll email you my list but it's all jumbled together.....if you want recipes of any I can email those or direct you to www.allrecipes.com which I use too because you can put in an ingredient and come up with a recipe for it. Plus, it has all the calorie and carb info etc and reviews. I tried Pinterest but the food was not always what it was cracked up to be in the photo and I can't afford to waste money. Food is very expensive. Today I need to make a good "crispy" cookie as my sweet tooth is clammering. I threw out that Paula Deen cake...ick...too sweet.....no wonder she's diabetic now. No more Paula Deen recipes for me. I just like a little something in the evening with a cup of herbal tea and sometimes in the afternoon.
It sounds to me like you're a good cook. Hobo Chili sounds good to me.....I'm hungry right now! LOL!

  13. If you have a piece of meat you want to use, any old piece of meat, just google the name of the meat for recipes and you will have more than you can choose from! Some are pretty complicated, but I go for simple.

  14. Since you like your chili with veggies in it, have you ever just put your chili over a baked potato? It's good that way, too. I will email you a few of our favorite recipes.

  15. I have a great recipe for chili made with sweet potatoes and carrots, and no beans:) I laughed thinking of you having all your foods separated, I thought that was a kid thing:) Not an issue with me. I don't like to be separated from my food!

  16. Yup time for a new fridge! They just aren't made to last like the old ones and having Mr Fixit out all the time isn't good either!

  17. Oh my gosh! I'm with you on the foods touching! I just can't stand things running together on my plate. I also can't stand my bread soaking up juice from beans or whatever! :) I go through that "what to fix for supper" problem too!

  18. We eat mostly healthy foods, low sugar, low fat, organic. Twice a month we have roast chicken and then the second day we have tacos with the chicken and those are easy meals.
