43 years

Well it is that time of year again.  Wedding Anniversary time.  We have managed to  annoy, disagree and love each other through another year.  I am a lucky woman to still have my best friend and soul mate to irritate everyday!

A long time ago..“We ate cake!”December 20 1960 Cake

At least we were civil and fed the cake to each other nicely.  I watch some of those “Wedding Shows”  with some of the wedding cake fiascos and the smearing of the cake on the face.  It is not funny at all in my opinion.  I think the younger generation has lost respect for this part of the wedding day.

Other than breathe a sigh of relief and greet all your guests..the first thing you do together as a married couple is cut the cake..a joint effort..holding the cake knife together.  Then you feed each other part of the first slice..the symbolism being that you will provide for each other from now on.  I think it is a wonderful tradition.

I have restored the photographs that were in our wedding album.  They have faded over time..even if they were in an album.  More wedding photos can be found here.

I still have the dress and veil.  I would like to take the dress apart and have it made into a baptismal gown for my Great Grands ( someday far off in the future)..either that or donate it to a museum.  I would like to do something useful with it.

What have you done with your old wedding dress?  Is it like mine..wrapped in white tissue paper and stuck in a box? :)

  2. Congratulations! I enjoyed seeing your wedding photos; such a pretty Christmas wedding. Yes, I still have my dress. I like your idea of having yours altered to make a baptismal gown.

  3. Happy Anniversary, we were married in August of '69. My dress is very similar to yours. It is here somewhere, I know it made the move, but there are still boxes of stuff I have to go through. Maybe next summer!!! Loved looking at your wedding photos.

  7. I wonder what happened to mine. It was never worn again and lost in the mists of time. :-)

  9. I would bet the vast majority of women that have wedding dresses also have them packed in tissue in a box somewhere wondering what to do with them if they can't pass them down. Love love the picture! Happy Anniversary!

  10. Happy Anniversary!!! Yep, for 41 years the dress has been in a box. Your idea is a really good one.

  11. Congratulations on another year of bliss. My dress lived in a box for 45 years and about 10 years ago it moved the local historical museum. I forgot to tell you I like your Christmas header very much.

  12. Congrats. I love your first sentence... and it is all so true, here, too!
My mom made my dress so it is extra special to me. It is wrapped in tissue in some moving box downstairs.
I love your idea of repurposing the dress into christening gowns - what a grand idea!

  13. I didn't have a big wedding, because we paid for it ourselves and didn't have a lot of money back then, so my dress was tea length and it is long gone by now. I always thought that it would be great to renew our vows and I would love to have a real wedding dress to charish but then I look at it and tell myself that the dress isn't the important part it is the love that has lasted for over 27 years! I love your story and congradulations on the anniversary! I think people give up way to easy now days.

  14. Aw, great photo! The smushing of the cake disgusts me, yours is a much more genteel way. I also refused to do the garter thing at my wedding. Just seemed weird to me.
I made my wedding dress, and it is hung up in a bag in the closet. Not sure what will become of it. I was the matron of honour at my sister's wedding, and I supplied my own dress. I made that into a cute party dress for Meredith when she was little.

  15. Happy Anniversary!

I agree that the symbolism of cutting the cake has been lost. The images of ramming the cake in the spouse's face are far from funny and reflect the immaturity of the individuals.

Please find someone to make the baptismal gown from your dress. It would be a perfect way to preserve it.

  20. CONGRATULATIONS CONNIE & GENE !!!
Good times, many experiences, all filled with love and devotion, and always keep smiling!
My daughter had my wedding gown redesigned by a wonderful local seamstress. Same dress but oh so different. She also wore my pearl headpiece but had a new veil.

That gown is still upstairs preserved in lots of tissue paper and a white cotton sheet hung in a wedding gown bag in my cedar closet. So is her H.S. Cheerleading jacket and uniform. One of these days she says she'll retreive it!

Continued love and togetherness forever! Love, Liz

  22. Thanks for explaining the meaning of a common tradition. I was married before you and didn't know the meaning. I think young people don't know of some of these things because we don't teach them.
Happy anniversary! man. This close to Christmas? That must have been more than busy.

  24. I pull mine out at our 25th. As I made mine I use some of the left overs to made a gown. I think I know were they are but not sure. Ann

  25. Congrats, you two! What a great picture. I went and looked at the other ones, too. I totally agree with you! I don't like the lack of respect, either, with the smearing cake all over each other's faces.

I have heard of people making christening gowns from their wedding gowns for grandbabies before. That's a wonderful idea. But donating it to the museum would be cool, too. Tough call.

  26. My wedding dress designed by me and sewn by my favorite aunt still rests in the zip up suit bag along side Hubby's wedding suit.

    They don't fit anymore.

    Happy Anniversary!!!

  27. Ohhhhh...warning! Never look at my wedding pictures! You will be sorely disappointed in me. :(

I never thought of the symbolism you so aptly explained here. You have such a valuable point! Wish there was a way to print that up in a nice card to attach to those fancy cake cutters that get sold especially for events like weddings. You know, one of those "where this custom came from" little booklets that explain things like this. It would make a thoughtful gift for new couples who are serious about their future together.

Speaking of that future together: congratulations to you and Far Guy for those faithful forty three years together. A notable accomplishment in an age when hardly anyone thinks about the meaning behind the gestures in the wedding ceremony and customs.

And yes: re-making your wedding gown into baptismal gowns for those future great-grandchildren would be another meaningful--and precious--gesture.

  28. I had never thought of the cutting of the wedding cake in that way either but I also hate the smearing of cake.
