Well lets get on with summer! We had brats on the grill, baked beans and raspberries for supper last night. I wore my heavy fleece lined sweatshirt at work..it was not much above 55 degrees F in the museum. I almost got my snow boots out of the closet and my parka is still there too.
Far Guy’s Lilac is about to bloom. Chance is sitting in the old sandy parking lot, if it rains some more the weeds will take over that area and it will be greener by fall.
It was a hard winter for the Lupines. Without much snow cover many of them succumbed to the frost heaves. Last year I had many Lupines. This year I have lots of little seedlings that may bloom later in the summer. These blooms were a nice surprise!
The Oak leaves are expanding nicely after the last rain. Another week and we will have the dense shade that is ten degrees cooler than in town.
Far Guy mowed the lawn twice in May. It almost froze the other morning. We are thankful for the fireplace..it keeps the house warm and cozy.
I am feeling better as long as I get the rest I need. I have had this cold for 23 days now..I think I am over the cough ..the antibiotics must finally be working. My chest wall is no longer inflamed because I can breathe without pain..so things are looking up! :)
So glad to hear you are feeling better! The kids have gone through the cold with a nasty caugh. I just hope that I do not get it! We have been pretty lucky with the weather. It hasn't been to cold. It has gotten down in the 40's at night but for the most part it stays at least 70 during the day.
ReplyDeleteThe lupine is so pretty!
ReplyDeleteOur lilacs are fading now, just as Far Guy's begins to bloom. Glad to hear you are definitely on the mend. That cough sounded really bad, even all the way over here. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am so happy to hear that you are finally feeling a little better. Our lilacs have already been here and are gone just as yours are starting to bloom. Due to the unusual weather we have had (winter and spring) some of my perennials are not doing too well. Hopefully as time progresses they will start to bloom.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear you are feeling better...but you still need rest! (I'm a believer in rest, in case you hadn't noticed.) Love those two lupines; I never had any luck with them. Enjoy your improving health!
ReplyDeleteWe ended up with a heat record breaking May, so I'd take your cold rain any day. Sigh. Beautiful flowers!
ReplyDeleteThat is one wicked virus, it just doesn't want to let you go. Glad to hear that you are making some progress with recovery. How very frustrating to be sick for so long.
ReplyDeleteAnd frost, still? Darn, I thought that was just here. The oldtimers say it's the longest coldest spring in well....a long time.
But we have warm days now, and the lilacs are just starting to finish...so we must be warming up.

Brats and beans (you forgot to mention the beer) and raspberries! Perfect. Glad you're finally shaking the grips of that cold.
ReplyDeleteWhoohoo! Best news is you are feeling better!!
ReplyDeleteI would think the lack of ground cover this winter had an effect on a lot of plants and critters, too. It will be nice when you have the ten degrees cooler this summer. :)
Woohoo...I'm so happy your feelin' better. We need to bury that stinkin' virus deep in the ground!
ReplyDeleteIt's been hot here upper eighties and nineties 'till today. I just came in from my two hour mow and I froze. I know...I'm a wimp but it was 54, no sun and windy as all get~out. I donned my leggins and sweatshirt. 'Can't believe I was swimmin' just yesterday. :o)
God bless ya sweetie and have a great day!
That looks like a French Lilac, they typically bloom later than the standard lilacs.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are climbing out of the abyss of that cold!
You poor woman. You must be tried of being sick. that's a long time to be fighting a cold. Sounds like you need to stay in bed or on the couch for about a week and just heal. Being in that cold museum has got to be difficult. Can you drink hot tea or something warm while you're there?
ReplyDeleteGlad your feeling and getting better . We had the same thing with some of our bushes the winter was so mild and not much snow and never got a true permafrost either . Our Lilacs had bloomed a few weeks ago and are now done . But all is growing and doing well now with the plants and flowers . They are enjoying a day of rain today ,I can hear them cheering after a long drought and hot temps . I love your header and photos . Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteMy lilac's look horrible this year.....glad your's a faring better. What kind of oaks can you grow?
ReplyDelete....glad your feeling better too!
ReplyDeleteYou were sicker than what you let on! Hope that all's well now. Funny how we had such a warm winter and now a very cold spring.
ReplyDeleteWell, it hit over 100 here today for the first time this year, so I wish I could have sent some of that over to your office to help warm you up! We certainly can spare it!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you are feeling a bit better. It's not over til it's over, though, so keep taking good care of yourself!
The ups and downs of the weather have been hard to keep up with. But it's certainly nice today!
ReplyDeleteI remember going to the lake after school was our and the lilacs were just starting to bloom along with the peonies. I really like lupines. I had a commercial one for one season only as it froze out it the winter.
ReplyDeleteThat was some bug that got you down and doesn't seem to want to leave too soon either. I have no immune system so I probably wouldn't have made it! Staying alone and away from people sometimes can be a good thing. So glad you are on the mend now!
ReplyDeleteI love the lupines and I'm thinking of having brats tonight on the grill. First ones of the season! Happy Summer to all!
Last year I planted my three Quercus bicolors that I was saving for a special spot, they ring the south side of Pumpkin Pond in the Highway Hedgerow. Someday I hope to see them nice and big and broad so that when we have a couple of hot days we can take breaks from the garden and go sit next to the pond in the shade and watch the cars go by in secret. You saying that your oaks make you so much cooler in town makes me think my vision is right on target!
ReplyDeleteYour lupine is lovely! Is it one of your natives? I can't believe how big the lupine I started from seed last year are already! Our May really rushed our spring, lilac season went very fast and the June bloomers were already hitting a strong stride by the last two weeks of May.
Your fleece weather will be ending soon!
Glad you are slowing kicking that cold to the curb.
ReplyDeleteSurely those weren't fresh raspberries you had for dessert? The fresh ones we see here right now are from Chile I think. How bizarre is that. My raspberries are just about done flowering, and there are some half grown green berries on some of the canes.
