Bird Pooped Plant

The mystery plant that appeared in Far Guy’s flower bed has been identified.  It is a pretty native perennial.

Mystery Bird Pooped plant

It finally bloomed and the identification was confirmed.

Penstemon grandiflorus

Penstemon grandiflorus or Large Beard-tongue. A lovely addition to the wild gardens.  I was glad to welcome this bird pooped addition!

Far Guy moved a hunk of Bluestem this week and he has been watering it since it is so warm.  It was a large clump that escaped into the rocks on the east side of the house.

The weather has turned warm. Temperatures are about 85 degrees F  (29 degrees C) during the day.  It cools off at night. Thank goodness:)

  1. That's a beautiful penstemon. In the mountains on top of old stumps, lots of huckleberry plants proliferate for the same reason: they were pooped there. We are not expected to get out of the low 60s here.

  2. Very cool plant. Hot here too. Unlike the city, where the concrete holds the heat, it gets cool at night. The perfect weather!!! Enjoy your weekend.

  3. So, sometimes the birds give us ideas of how they think we should arrange our gardens! Lovely!

  9. That's pretty hot isn't it? Do you get humidity with that, or are you dry like us?

We [laughing] are supposed to get to 26 on Sunday...it's still raining here, we will see.

Love the bird poop plant, send that bird over here.

  10. Penstemon is a flower I learned about just recently in a garden magazine. I had never heard of them before then. It makes sense that there is a wild native of it as that is probably how they developed the commercial plants. It is a neat flower.
