Icy Weather

Last night it started to rain..then it started to sleet..then it rained again..sometimes a warm spell in Minnesota in January is not a good thing.

Chance and I ventured as far as the patio which possibly could be mistaken for a skating rink.

My brothers are having a good time fishing..but haven't caught any fish yet.. they did play catch and release with a minnow...

You are a minnow, you have been raised in a lake, caught and are at the Bait Shop. Fishermen come by and talk about you and all your friends, about how some minnows are more delicious looking to certain fish. You just happen to be a sucker minnow..perfect for Northern Pike bait. Your new owner buys a little harness for you..he wriggles it on your little scaly body..which you must have puffed all up..because he didn't get the harness tight enough..after a big sigh .. you escape into the icy depths of the lake...free, free at last. But you are still just fish food, fairly lucky fish food.

We had hoped to attend a Hockey Game this evening, two of the Grand girls are playing tonight. The icy roads will probably keep us home. Madison just called and all Hockey Games have been cancelled.

I am reminded of another adventure in the rain, in the winter, in the Ozarks, in the middle of the night. We were headed back to Minnesota from Mississippi. I was driving and it was raining. It was fairly hilly country, going up a hill I happened to glance at a brightly lit window..there was a naked lady with long flowing hair sitting in the window. I told Far Guy "You should have seen that naked lady" ..he missed it..he wanted me to turn around so he could get a good look..our girls were both sound asleep in the back seat. I was tired of driving anyway so I pulled over to the edge of the road to let him drive, if he wanted to go back and oggle over some naked lady he could do the turning around..as I stepped out of the car I slipped and nearly fell on my butt.. Black Ice. No we did not turn around, all thoughts of beautiful naked ladies in windows were forgotten as we proceeded cautiously and carefully up one hill and sliding down the other side while the car was just idling..sometimes going sideways. I never thought it could ever be slippery enough so that a car in neutral could slide downhill..we eventually got to a motel in Harrison, Arkansas. We call that "the night that we were saved by a naked lady." I can still picture her in the window..was she real or not..I don't know..I do know that I was driving the speed limit and was not aware that I was on black ice.
Stay safe out there this weekend:)

  1. Ice is horrible all right. I'd rather have a foot of snow that a half inch of ice any day. I hope your rain and ice doesn't 'slide' over into Michigan.

  3. Ice is just the worst. We tend to get more icy drizzle here in southern Kansas than snow. I hate it when they are forecasting icy drizzle... long term forecast shows it for Wed/Thur and I'm hoping that changes by then.

Stay safe and stay home tonight... all warm and cozy with Chance! I'm sure he's happy you'll all be home tonight. :-)

  4. Yes, Connie, STAY INSIDE! I love the story of being saved by the naked lady. Black ice is so scary, and we get a lot of it here in the Pacific Northwest. In fact, it kills more people than any other weather event in this part of the country.

  5. Cute story - naked ladies - that's not a common site! If you get bored, venture out to our house!

  6. I love your stories! First the minnow and then the ice. I remember one time when our family lived in upstate NY. My mom and I were driving home. It was snowing so hard that the windshield wipers were freezing and would quit working. That meant stopping the car occasionally and trying to break the accumulation off the wipers. We were following a snowplow and still could barely see in front of us. It was such an emotional relief to make it home safely that night - - - way back in the early '70s.

  7. Two of the scariest conditions for me to drive in are fog and ice. Both are treacherous and I avoid them whenever possible.
The mystery of the beautiful lady with long flowing hair - sounds like she was a guardian angel - except for the naked part :) I don't think angels are allowed to be naked. Wonder what she really was doing in that window.

  8. I know what ya'll are talkin' about. We get more of the dreaded ice storms than snow here and it is treacherous to say the least. Four wheel drive helps in snow but nothing goes well on ice. I'm afraid no matter how bad my rear end felt, my Hubby would have gone back to peek at Lady Godiva.

    Have a super weekend, girl!!!

  9. I am really sick of this ice. Barney messes up his hip with the uneven snow, that is frozen solid. We have had rain all day which has softened it up, but the water has no place to go. We are solid fog now and it may get cold enough to freeze but I don't know. Chance is such a beauty with his black and white markings. Take care. Oh yes, I didn't Rae crap about the Iowa sign, I am trying to model good behavior, hah, I will get her some of these days.

    Stay inside and stay safe.

  12. What a great story. Black ice is the worst! I hate it when it thaws and then re-freezes to create treacherous conditions.

  13. It did the same thing here the night before last. You could hardly stand up yesterday.
