Book Club : December 2025

I had Book Club on Thursday afternoon.  The book was The Switch by Beth O'Leary

On my scale of 1 to 10  I give it a 4.   It was a lot of fluff and not much substance.  I enjoyed the 79 year old woman in the book and her outlook.  However I would not read the book again.

Seems like it has been forever since I have read a page turner!

Recommendations are always welcome!

Friday was a quiet day, toward evening Jen and I went to Michaels. Far Guy waited in the car. He people watched and talked to my sister on the phone whilst we were in the store!

No yarn was purchased just watercolor paper for more cards.

  1. Craft stores are fun to go into. I wish we had one in our town. Though we have a lovely family-own fabric store. Very nice.

Sadly, I don't have a page turner to suggest. Hope someone else does.

    Happy December.

  2. I have enjoyed your blog for a long time, but never commented. I thought you might enjoy the "Miss Julia" book series by Ann B. Ross. There are several books in the series and just get better as they progress. I enjoy your adventures with Far Guy. I live in southern Missouri.

  7. I'm not sure what sort of books youmenjoy, but some of my favorites include: A Girl Called Samson by Amy Harmon, books by Kristin Hannah, and Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Grams, to name a few.

  8. I’m reading The Boleyn Traitor is a historical novel by Philippa Gregory, published in 2025. It focuses on the life of Jane Boleyn, the sister-in-law of Anne Boleyn. The book explores Jane's struggle for survival in the treacherous Tudor court of Henry VIII. I like English royal history.

  9. Sorry, but this might be too long. I love to read a really good book!
Ann Cleeves books are so well-written and interesting because she describes characters extremely well, hides a lot of clues to figure out, and they are set in Scotland’s Shetland Islands and northern England. You really feel like you are inside the story. She has written several different series: Vera mysteries and the Shetland series have both been programs on PBS in recent years. As with the Louise Penny stories, I would try to read them in order as they make more sense for you. Here is a list of “best books” by Cleeves:
10 Best Books Written by Ann Cleeves
Raven Black. Ann Cleeves. 2006 ** starts the Shetland series**
The Long Call. Ann Cleeves. 2019
    White Nights. Ann Cleeves. 2008
The Crow Trap. Ann Cleeves. 1999
The Darkest Evening. Ann Cleeves. 2020
    The Heron's Cry. Ann Cleeves.
    Red Bones. Ann Cleeves.
    Blue Lightning. Ann Cleeves.

The Three Pines Series by Louise Penny is on YouTube

“While you can read them out of order, there are two layers of story -- the murder being solved in the book and the background character stories that carry over and build up as you progress through the books. Plus a deeper, hinted-at mystery bubbling up in the Sureté de Quebec...really, you should read these in order. It's a richer experience, and as you get to know the 'regulars', you the reader become an unseen member of the Three Pines community in the process. Otherwise you are just a tourist popping in for a short visit :)” -Mary, Goodreads

  10. As for interesting Minnesota writers, have you tried Lavyrle Spencer, William Kent Krueger, Jon Hassler, John Sandford, Vince Flynn? Lavyrle Spencer wrote really interesting books based historically, mostly, and got many awards and wrote a lot of best-sellers. She quit when she had made a certain amount of money so she could travel and enjoy her family. My kind of woman! She is now 82.

  11. I am reading the latest Louise Penny book. There are lots of them, especially the inspector Gamache series. I have read them all, all set in Quebec and the fictional town of Three Pines, near the American border. They are both charming and dark mysteries.

  12. I need to find a good audio book to listen to on the plane. I have NO room to take an actual book though. You actually went to Michaels and didn't buy yarn? I'm rarely able to do that.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  14. Fluff books are what I consider summer reading. They have their place but I can only read one or two before I need something more substantive.
Craft stores can be very dangerous places!

  15. LD....I can't believe you didn't buy some more yarn. The weather kept us from Hobby Lobby but we did get to the bank, and Menards to return a part that the install guys didn't use on our dryer.

  16. You certainly got a lot of suggestions for books to read. Just today I finished an Ann Cleeves book called A Day in the Death of Dorothea Cassidy. It was pretty interesting. I give it an 8.
