My Dad missed my first Christmas in 1951 because he was in Korea.
However he was there for my second Christmas in 1952.
Christmas 1952 the photo was taken at the farm house where I grew up. The tree was in the corner of the living room. I am pretty sure that all that occupied that room that year was the tree and a rocking chair. My parents purchased the farm in the Spring of 1952.You can see Dad's Army photo high on that shelf...he must have hung up that shelf as it was pretty tall...as was my Dad.
I miss my Dad, but I have many really good memories of him!
We had a Winter Storm when he died and today we also have a Winter Storm.
Far Side
The memories are what sustains us. I don't think we ever grow so old not to miss our parents. My mom left us 21 years ago on Dec. 16 and Dad 16 years this past September.

ReplyDeleteI imagine they were excited in 1952 for him to be home and to own a home. I recall the excitement of owning our first home. The year was 1972. 20 years after their big day.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the old hymn “Precious Memories how they linger”. You have a great heritage. RHill, TX
ReplyDeleteI've been loving your Christmas memory posts. Thank you for allowing us to take a peek into your Christmas pasts!
ReplyDeleteHe does look tall, and handsome too. I love tinsel on trees and still miss seeing it.
ReplyDeleteWow. Wonderful memories!
ReplyDeleteI love the "Christmas 1952" photo, the handwriting looks like it could have been my mother's, so neat and lovely. Thank you for sharing such good memories. Your dad was one of 14 kids? Was he the youngest? How sad to live to be the last one, in a way.
ReplyDeleteDad was #10 of 14 yes he felt all alone after his youngest sister died.
DeleteFirst of all...thanks to your dad for his military service. He does look tall in the photo you shared. Stay safe in your winter storm. We have the same kinda weather here too. Visibility is not at its best....
DeleteGoodnight Gram
That is a wonderful photo of you and your dad. No matter how old we get, we still miss those loved ones! I figured you were probably in the middle of a winter storm. It has stayed north of us, except for a narrow swath that got ice overnight - just west of us. Stay safe and warm!
ReplyDeleteYou have many good memories and the photos showing the memories. We are having high wind and snow right now.
ReplyDeleteWe seem to be able to remember the weather for our parents funerals. We had very brutal weather on the days of my parents funerals.
ReplyDeleteThe storm is your Dad saying hi!
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather was an avid hunter, and during a moment of silence at his funeral, a flock of geese flew over honking loudly - I know that was him letting us know he was ok.
That is a very wonderful photo. I miss my Dad too. He was 71 when he died. Way too young
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful memory!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your wonderful memories of your Dad with us today.
ReplyDeleteWe have basically no photos from childhood...and I so wish we did. I wonder if that is why I enjoy everyone else's? Your dad does look tall!
ReplyDeleteWhat memories! Can you imagine how many more pictures we would have had if we had cameras in a cell phone back then. But the ones we do have are all the more precious. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to believe it's been two years already. Those are both great photos. Our memories are something we really cherish as we grow older don't we?
ReplyDeleteWe had warm weather but a high wind warning too. Tomorrow is supposed to be bitter cold, then another warm up. No wonder everyone is so sick this year.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
LD....The last of 14 children must have seemed strange for your dad. Those in the Korean war were sort of forgotten because of the Vietnam war and I was able to identify men who were there when they would have the obits.
ReplyDeleteA record winter storm when my Dad died. The city shut down for 3 days. It's something you never forget. And you reminded me on my birthday. Wishing you a Merry Christmas
