The Sandhill Cranes are the oldest living bird species, in fact they have been around for two million years.
Perhaps that is why the sculptor named his sculpture "Thread to the past."
If you have heard them flying overhead they make a prehistoric sound. Here is a link to hear their calls.

Someday I would like to go over to the Platte River in Nebraska where they rest for a few weeks before carrying on and witness their migration. I've heard that something like 80% of all sandhill cranes pass through there in those few weeks which I think it going on right now. At least I heard that it was on my local NPR station.

I didn't know this about cranes. They are popular around here. I call them flying pterodactyl. They look prehistoric to me.
