My cousin Dale stopped by to pick up the photos of his parents and siblings. We had a good visit. He is thinking about retiring next summer, he says he needs some quality fishing time and will build a shouse not far from us. ( A shouse is a shop/house combination that is becoming quite popular.) He has a bunch of old farm tractors to work on in retirement.

As you said, a shouse is becoming quite popular according to the internet. Today is the first day I have heard of it. I looked online at some of the plans. It makes good sense to do this rather than a separate building. I guess it would have its own HVAC to avoid any shop smells to permeate the living area? I love that he has this vision. Hope he enjoys it even more than he anticipates!

A shouse is perfect. I've always wanted a big sunny room just for me and my 'stuff' as a studio. I even looked at one of those tiny buildings with a tiny porch to put on our land about 30 yards or so from the house.

It's always good that one have a good hobby or interest before they retire. If the hobby takes over work , so much the better.

ReplyDeleteWhat is old is new again. Many years ago, the barn was connected to the house, so having the shop connected makes perfect sense to me.

Our house is a Shouse and we love it! I also love that picture, they sure were hard workers back in the day!

ReplyDeleteI haven't heard the term "Shouse". Around me we have retired friends building "barndominiums" a combination barn/house. Except they are using them as barns, they are using them as a small residence with a giant shop. I think "shouse" is the better description!
ReplyDeleteThinking about it, the house portion is not that small either. I laugh when I hear people say they are going to "downsize" and then build a huge house.
Never heard the term shouse before but have seen shop/houses before use to be one down the road shop at the front house at the back.
ReplyDeleteA shouse is practical and cost effective. I always thought my oldest brother (a mechanic and welder) would build one but he never did.

ReplyDeleteShouses have been popular around here for a long time. One friend made an elaborate two story house inside of a shop building with a two story living room with fireplace. One would know that you were in a part of a shed. That woill be nice to see how it turns out.
