The speckled petunias seem to be all the rage this year.
I am not so sure I like them....and that price tag...well I guess prices have gone up all over...in case you cannot see it ...it says ...drumroll...$329.99 uffda.
I don’t think I like the splotches either. My neighbour has gone for purple and white striped petunias, mixed with plain purple. Quite pretty (as viewed from my bedroom window).
Oh, I really like them! I am fascinated by the fact they can change depending on how much sun they get--more or less speckles or even streaks or stripes here and there. I had never had petunias before last year--and got the spotted ones. Got more this year. I have fallen in love with them. Of course I prefer anything with variegated leaves verses plain ones...and flowers with more than one color...so I suppose it is no surprise I love the spotted petunias--LOL! But I just love that petunias are so hardy, grow like crazy and take little maintenance for dead heads. Sorry I met them so late. :)
My daughter in law bought large planted pots the first year in her new home. She took pictures to carry with her to nurseries in subsequent years to recreate the pot herself. I think she paid over $40 for the first pots and as the cheapy mother-in-law who only buys mixed flats, I thought she was nuts, LOL. I guess I really do live in the dark ages.
The flowers are gorgeous. I had a bit of sticker shock when I looked at flowers this spring. The heat this week has been tough on a couple of the flower pots I have.
I guess that price includes that big (?Canna Lily?) in the pot, also? It's still very expensive! I am not a fan of the speckles in the group setting with the solids. Maybe by themselves they would be more dramatic. They somehow also don't seem to have a continuity of the color theme regarding pattern and hues. And maybe it's just me but I prefer not to have those scarlet reds with the rosy pink family. They don't seem to be compatible to me - - but that may just be my taste. However I do love that someone grew something that big without bugs eating it! I hope though that there were no insecticides used so the pollinators could safely enjoy the flowers.
That's an insane price! I'm thinking 3-4 wave petunias, similar number of geraniums and impatience and a couple of canna lilies would be about $50-60 depending on original size. The container would be a similar price, while potting soil maybe $30. (These are CDN prices). At least they didn't use dracena for the spike. Can you tell I'm not a fan?
Prices for plants was high this year, so I opted for humble marigolds. I needed to replace some perennials that didn’t survive the Winter, but I’ll wait until next year, IF prices come down.
I worked in a nursery one year. It takes a lot of work to create such a piece. Hard, standing on your feet all day. It takes months to prune it to such a condition!
It's beautiful but no way would I pay even $100. I think sometimes they put an outrageous price on it try to discourage people from buying it as they don't really want to sell it but then if someone actually wants to pay that amount then okay. It's a win/win for the seller.
I like the speckles. I don't buy already designed and planted pots. The fun is in designing your own. And a lot cheaper too. Pots like these are for instant gratification. Gardeners wait and watch them grow.
Uffda is right, whatever that means. :) I couldn't even affort to buy Walmart's vegetable plants this year for the . $4.97 for one little plant. The old timey petunias are the prettiest, aren't they? And they smell good.
I bought a canna that just isn't going to bloom. This drought stuff is tough as watering it doesn't phase it. I like all the color but I like the solid color ones best.
Im not a spotted tunia fan either. There are some amazing ones with a different color edge tho I like and will search out next year. I didn't used to like tunias at all but they've improved so much I may give em a go. Sherry in MT
It is solid petunia's for me. I've grow the original magenta Wave from seed for many years. The variegated plants I've tried don't produce as well, and many revert.
Must have been a nice solid container for that insane price. Who can afford that? I plant my own containers. More rewarding & low cost.
Started plant prices were so high where I live, too. I am not a big fan of the speckled petunias but there are so many varieties out there now. I can't believe what that potted plant arrangement cost. I thought it was something you had made in your garden.

Uffda indeed! It is a goreous arrangement, but there is just no way I would spend that on flowers. Yikes!
