Far Guy and I are watching Vikings Valhalla on Netflix at night. It isn't as funny as Norseman but still entertaining enough for us...it is fairly violent so it is not for the squeamish. The special effects and wardrobe department did an awesome job on this series and we hope that there is a second season.
I keep reminding Far Guy that Vikings are his people...as the Vikings bodies naturally developed Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency because they ate so much fish and would get worms....of course they only lived to be 40 or 50 years old so the effects of Alpha 1 were all positive ...they didn't get worms. However they did pass their genes on down the line. Far Guy has both genes, our daughters are carriers and we have one grandson that also carries one gene.
A few days ago it was rare disease day...since Far Guy is lucky enough to have two rare diseases (Trigeminal Neuralgia and Alpha One Antitrypsin Deficiency)...I thought I would at least mention it.
Back to the movies.

How interesting that Far Guy has Viking genes in him. Too bad about the Alpha One Antitrypsin Deficiency gene though being passed on. Glad you are enjoying the movie.

That is incredible that FG has TWO rare diseases, and that he has managed them as well as he is. It helps to have such a great partner, like you are. I loved that book and movie, BTW.
ReplyDeleteI watched the original Vikings series and enjoyed it. I was sorry to see it go. The Valhalla series has been on my radar but I've been too busy with other things to sit down and watch it.

ReplyDeleteI had to look up both of those diseases, out of curiosity. I suspect those Viking genes flow through a LOT of us from Minnesota and Wisconsin. One of my great-grandfathers immigrated to Wisconsin from Norway.

ReplyDeleteAlthough, I have no real proof, a distant cousin once wrote a book that suggested that our family originated came from the Vikings. They invaded Ireland in 895 and settled there, and since my father's family did indeed immigrate from Ireland then it's quite possible. I'm grateful though, to know that that awful disease that has inflicted Far Guy has never reared it's ugly head.
Far Guy is "lucky enough to have two rare diseases". Some luck. I do hope he's having a good week.

I'm about 95% mixed Swedish and Norwegian and Tom is also mostly Scandinavian genetically but fortunately we don't have any rare diseases. FG got the unfortunate jackpot.

That is a wonderful family picture! It's so unfair that Far Guy has two rare diseases. I did not know the Vikings were carriers of Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. I have done the genetic testing through 23 & Me and it shows that I have one of the genes. I have no idea if anyone else in my family had it.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize FarGuy was a Viking and had A1-AT. We are of Danish ancestry and my brother was diagnosed with this disease. He had to have a liver transplant because his liver was basically overtaken by this disease and had caused a cancer to form inside the liver. He just got it done in the nick of time and has been doing much better. There has been no one else in our family with this disease (I had myself checked for it and don't have it) and we couldn't imagine how he got it but it's the Scandinavian genes.
ReplyDeleteWe just cancel netflix. We just were not using it. I also canceled Starz. We are doing a lot of Brittbox mysteries. Vikings had bad genes. i never heard of that before now. I don't think I have any in my lineage.
