Whilst we were fixing supper Far Guy said “Goldfinches just arrived on the feeders.” After supper Chance and I went out to sit a spell.
The Goldfinches are sporting their summer finery.
As you can see this one still has some winter feathers.
Chance meanderd around the yard doing his usual stuff…then came to lay down by me and survey the yard…he looks to the right and to the left over and over again.
I am busy with the birds…watching them flit around…then I notice a squirrel that came bounding into the yard and as soon as it saw Chance it flattened just like a pancake.
I wondered who would see who first. The squirrel tried to exit the yard and I told Chance to get him…and Chance chased him off…makes an old dog feel good…the squirrel was in no danger.
We spread some grass seed and a bit of garden soil on some bare spots in the lawn and then sat outside until Jo showed up looking for Odda…we sat and visited for awhile and sure enough Odda came to visit. It was a lovely day in Minnesota on Monday it was 80 something F 26C eh! We went straight from Winter to Summer. It is supposed to cool off and rain…so maybe our grass seeds will grow fast!
We see the goldfinches in the winter when they are wearing their winter coats. You're lucky to have them in their summer finery with only a sweater on! Bob's squirrels give her a real workout. She has five of them and spends most of the day in the sunroom waiting for one to appear so she can come alive and shoot off after it. She comes sooooo close to a mouthful of fur time after time, but can't seem to close the gap on that last 1/8 inch! Go, Chance!
ReplyDeleteSounds lovely.
ReplyDeleteGoldfinches are such pretty birds. I have my feeders out for them. It sure did go right from winter to summer. Our A/C had to be turn on as the inside temps hit 78 degrees (outside was 85).
ReplyDeleteHubby put down some grass seed to fill in where the squirrels dug up the lawn. Rain and warm temps should help that. I should borrow Chance to keep the squirrels at bay.
Isn't it amazing how we wait and wait for spring, but then the weather jumps from winter to summer. It's that way here. Squirrels are funny! Bet it got to it's feet once Chance saw it. The goldfinches are pretty. We've seen just two here.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the goldfinches flit around with their bright colors in the spring. Charlie and I sat on the porch yesterday and watched the world. It was a nice feeling.
ReplyDeleteThere were goldfinches here a few weeks back but they left to go to your place. I mowed yesterday for the 2nd time and it was 85 F...already getting too warm for me. The squirrel is funny....I've never seen them do that before. Annie chases crows which are as big as she is and she feels she's protecting me and the property. You go Chance!
ReplyDeleteThat's a huge temperature difference in a short time. We got all the way up to 66°F yesterday, pretty perfect for me. I don't like it in the 80s. I laughed at the flat squirrel. And good for Chance to "chase" him. :-)
ReplyDeleteI saw one or two goldfinches here at the feeder yesterday too. Oh that Odda :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a pleasant way to spend some time. We have goldfinches all year around. But we never get the red polls like you do.
ReplyDeleteChance would have fun chasing the squirrels in my yard. They have a nest high in one of the trees and are always clicking across the fence and digging in the grass. The seasons changed quickly here, too.
ReplyDeleteFuzzy loved to do thinks like that...even when he couldn't see or hear. Way to go Chance!
ReplyDeleteWe saw some goldfinches the other day. I've seen cats do that when we pass with the dogs, the pancake effect! We are predicted the same temperatures that you had today, and had similar yesterday. Hope your seed germinates and gets growing!
ReplyDeleteWas near 90 yesterday--skipped spring alright. Chance must love the porch sitting with you guys. Perfect weather for carving--before the mosquitoes arrive--LOL! ;)
ReplyDeleteThat squirrel is funny!
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are great, I love the goldfinches. We had a couple of orioles at our hummingbird feeder the other day. We don't usually see orioles. Squirrels are fun to watch - they lay flat on their stomachs on our deck rails sunning themselves I guess. It drives the cats (indoors) crazy.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you and Chance are having nice days out side.
ReplyDeleteWas worried spring would never get to you.
I love the vibrant color of the gold finches. We don't get a lot of squirrels because of the barn cats, and dogs.
ReplyDeleteOh so nice and pretty
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what happened . We went from winter to summer in a day.
ReplyDeleteWe usually see Gold Finches for a few weeks around this time of year then they seem to disappear. Maybe if I got a Niger feeder they would stick around longer.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a lovely day- I see your glass flowers. My daughter made 4 for me and all but one have fallen off of their posts. Not strong enough glue I think. I need to work on those and put them back out in the yard...before the 90 degree heat comes to stay.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to think of you and Chance just sitting in the yard, enjoying nature.
ReplyDeleteIt is so great to be able to get outside. It is nice to know Odda isn’t going to go too far. The goldfinch look great on your feeder. My supply is low now of yellow birds but I still have one pair. My neighbor made a snide comment about the continue food supply for the rabbits and squirrels. I know he must have been a brother to my mom with all his subtle digs.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a delightful time outside. Odda's been visiting you for many years. We are seeing a lot of squirrels now.
ReplyDeleteWant to let you know that Kaboodle passed away yesterday. She was 15.
